24.01.2022 10 September 2020 World Suicide Prevention Day (WSPD) and Australia’s R U OK? Day Freemasons embracing community concerns... Let us remember that today is world suicide day and also Australia’s Are you OK? Day. We really can’t overlook the fact that some 65,000 Australians attempt suicide yearly. A staggering figure. The other thing we can’t overlook is that when someone suicides that will impact about 135 other people, the impacts are far reaching and felt by families, friends, work colleagues and the broader community. These are devastating figures and we in Freemasonry through our lodges in Adelaide, Darwin and right across South Australia and the Northern Territory have taken counsel from our members and we have tried to address mental illness upstream in order that these devastating figures downstream are reduced. There are other issues, for example it is estimated that one in four Australians are lonely, it is estimated that one in four University students experience mental illness. It has also just been stated that Australia is forecast to see an increase in suicide deaths of at least 13.7% over the next 5 years, according to a new report released by the University of Sydney’s Brain and Mind Centre. We have moved in Freemasonry through our philanthropic arm, Masonic Charities to try to address these things and we have done that in various ways, remember we’ve tried to do it upstream rather than downstream, (prevention, far better than cure). Lead by Dr Kate Gunn (University of South Australia) and creator of ifarmwell, Masonic Charities has partnered with the University of South Australia to provide a focus for commitment and action to prevent suicide through developing a free online tool kit to help people cope effectively with life’s challenges and get the most out of every day. We have other initiatives that will help to prevent mental illness by working on the cause upstream. For example, elderly people, we are trying to address their loneliness by providing buses in country areas and also handicapped people so they can actually access those buses and get out into the community. We are addressing children as well, we are not just restricting ourselves to one or two spectrums of people. Through the Starlight Children’s Foundation, we are trying to help children who are fearful of things like routine injections, things that are taken for granted and serious organic illness as well. All these things help to keep people’s mind a little bit more settled. It also helps the families because they can then rest assured that there are people who care, and we do care. That is part of the way we do things now, You Matter, We Care. As I have said on previous occasions, the Freemasons invest in people and we are ever alert to the problems that exist in our society and this day is one that really reinforces to us the need for us to keep going to try to help communities as best we can through our multiple initiatives, not just simply mental health but other areas as well, where we can reduce the stress load and therefore address these sorts of devastating diseases upstream. So today, I would remind all Freemasons to be alert to what we can do in the community; remember what we have done in the community, and let us continue to build on that. Our heartfelt feelings go out to all people who feel that they are worthless, when in reality they’re not, they are very important and as I said, we invest in people and we endeavour to encourage all people to feel good about themselves and be as happy as possible. Let us hope that tomorrow is a better day for everyone. Remember, for the concert of life, there is no program. 22.01.2022 Masonic Charities Cheque presentation to The Starlight Children’s Foundation Botanic Park, Adelaide Thursday 17 September 2020 In celebration of the partners...hip and the reopening of Starlight's Healthier Futures Initiative program in regional and remote Aboriginal communities, Dr Neil Jensen presented a cheque at Botanic Park on September 17, marking the first instalment of Masonic Charities’ $900,000 donation to Starlight. The celebration was attended by representatives from local health clinics, Masonic Charities, Starlight and Masonic Charities’ Patron, His Excellency the Honourable Hieu Van Le AC, Governor of South Australia. Thanks to the $900,000 grant the Starlight Children’s Foundation will help bridge the health gap for Indigenous children throughout South Australia and the Northern Territory. Starlight’s Healthier Futures Initiative (HFI) uses entertainment featuring Starlight’s superhero, Captain Starlight to help focus on detection and early treatment of chronic conditions for Indigenous children in rural and remote communities in South Australia and the Northern Territory. John Behenna, Chairman of Masonic Charities, said the partnership with Starlight Children's Foundation was part of Freemasonry’s substantial contribution to "advancing the human condition". "There is much good in the world and we are delighted to be part of it," Mr Behenna said. "The Masonic Charities Board, as the vanguard of Freemason philanthropy, seeks an ambitious agenda in benevolence, in South Australia and the Northern Territory, of which this magnificent project is a part." Neil Jensen, who sits on the Board of Directors for Masonic Charities as the Grand Master of the Freemasons of South Australia and the Northern Territory, said it was an honour to help promote and develop the continuing positive work of the Starlight Children’s Foundation. Dr Jensen said helping children who were fearful of medical treatment to be more relaxed and comfortable aligned with the core values of Freemasonry. "Freemasons invest in people," Dr Jensen said. 20.01.2022 Had a great evening at Hyde Park Bankers Lodge, with one of the first initiations (Bro Manzar Naqvi) to be conducted since the COVID restrictions allowed the ceremony. This lodge is a shining example of what a modern-day lodge should be. An atmosphere of friendliness strikes one on entering the premises. There were 32 in the lodge room for a perfect ritual of the first degree. Nine prospective members joined the festive board and they all seemed very keen. The initiate Bro Na...qvi, is from Pakistan, holds an MBA and has worked throughout the Middle East, Europe and the USA before arriving in Adelaide 18 months’ ago. He operates his own business consulting business ‘Bzeebz Solutions’ and his wife works at Adelaide University in information technology. There was an array of senior officers visiting the lodge including RWB Marcin Stankiewicz, RWB Arnie Narayan, VWB Brenton Terry, VWB Tolun Savut and VWB Brad Gay. AGM Gary Le Rossignol of course is the lodge secretary, treasurer and chairman of miscellany. See more

19.01.2022 23 Jan 2021 Rainbow 90th Crowning - Response by Grand Master Please let me acknowledge the Kaurna people, the traditional custodians of the land on which we m...eet. I would also like to pay my respects to elders past, present and emerging. Please let me recognize MWBro Geoff Tucker, Past Grand Master of the Freemasons of South Australia and the Northern Territory, and the Leaders of other Orders here present, namely, Supreme Grand Royal Arch Chapter and the Grand Lodge of Mark Master Masons, both of South Australia and the Northern Territory. I recognize all present with Honours from the Orders of Australia Council. Worthy Supreme Deputy of New South Wales and South Australia, Grand Worthy Advisor, Grand Mother Advisor, Senior members and other members of the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls New South Wales and South Australia, Distinguished Guests, Ladies, Gentlemen and fellow Freemasons here present: Thank you for your kind invitation to Norma and me to be present at this truly auspicious occasion. Thank you for the added honour of being able to participate in the Crowning Ceremony as DAD CHAPLAIN. On behalf of the Freemasons of South Australia and the Northern Territory, I proffer my congratulations, not only to you, Grand Worthy Advisor, on your accession to your high office, and to your Officers, but also to this beautiful International Order of the Rainbow for Girls for 90 years of magnificent and productive service to all mankind in general and to youth in particular. Your devotion to teaching leadership through community service is admirable and your three basic virtues of faith, hope and charity are sources of great inspiration. We are living through a time of rapid change; a time when the human brain is communicating via smart phones or other modern technology, using the fingers, rather than the previous method whereby the tongue was used. This is disappointing, because we are losing the associated input which accompanies talking, such as body language, expressive hands and head movements, smiles and sad looks, comfort with company and so on. Almost everyone here tonight would have a mobile phone and sometime today would have sent and received text messages. Yet, here we are; phones off and enjoying mutual company as we experience a very meaningful ceremony in which our youth are encouraged to build relationships, think positively, and perform good deeds for others, individually and as a group. Your promotion of Bible, Flag, Constitution and Lamb skin, i.e., as I see it, God, country, order and innocence, reminds us, your visitors, of the bond which binds you. Social skills will not be lost to social media while Orders like this exist. Some have suggested that what we promote is old hat; believe me that is not the case. Freemasonry is almost 400 years old. I, and the team of Leaders who surround me, have promoted our values, which turn on our belief in a Supreme Being and our duty to all mankind. We have halted the fall in our membership and, as I understand it, are on the cusp of a significant net increase. Please take strength from our work and be assured that there is a demand, for good people, gathering to do good things, for others. Well done to the young ladies here tonight and the more experienced ladies of the Order who support them. We wish you well as you now track towards 100 years. Please remember that those who bring happiness into the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves: you should, therefore, all feel very happy. Thank you; may the Great Architect of the Universe bless you all. MWBro Dr Neil Jensen Grand Master Freemasons of SA and the NT

19.01.2022 Fantastic to be along side our GM Bro. Dr. Neil Jensen, great achievements in the past 2 years and cementing the future of Freemasonry in SA & NT with over 5% increase of Membership applications in the past 3 months.

16.01.2022 Terrific Installation ceremony at Renmark on Saturday. SGW Marcin Stankiewicz conducted his first Installation, and WBro Gary Moate, his first as Assistant Grand Director. WB Allan Smith OAM, PGJD, MSA, a great townsman, who epitomises all of the virtues of an outstanding Freemason, was honoured by MWGM Neil Jensen on taking the chair once again. PAGM Robert Clyne OAM and I were most impressed with the six Filipino brethren who have recently joined Renmark Lodge, including Bro Pernito, a recent immigrant who became a Master Mason in the Philippines, and now Junior Warden of Renmark Lodge.

08.01.2022 Another successful tour of Freemasons Hall by a group of nine prospective members, all of whom had completed the online application to join our fraternity. The dynamic Membership Committee under the leadership of VWB Brenton Terry is exceeding all expectations - assisted on the night by Bros Ryan Mann and Cooper Allen, both of whom delivered extraordinary explanations of the history of the Craft, melding it into our modern-day practices and tenets. Supper was provided in the new cafe. I am so proud of the commitment from the members of the Membership Committee, driving the Membership Campaign forward inexorably. We will meet the Grand Master’s target of a nett increase of 70, and reverse the long slide downhill that we have suffered for so long. We are steaming forward on all fronts and what a great time to be a Freemason.

08.01.2022 Media Release Monday, 8 February 2021 Freemasons Centre for Male Health and Wellbeing... Men’s health moves mainstream A new research partnership is set to break ground in the most pressing health issues facing males. The Freemasons Centre for Male and Health and Wellbeing (FCMHW) is a research alliance involving the Masonic Charities, The University of Adelaide, and SAHMRI in South Australia. The Director of the FCMHW’s SA Division, Professor Gary Wittert, says the FCMHW brings together globally recognised leaders in male health research. More males die at every stage through the course of life, Prof Wittert said. Males have more accidents, take their own lives at a far greater rate and suffer from more lifestyle-related health conditions. We also see more men than women leave the workforce early due to chronic disease. Top priorities for the Centre’s SA Division include prostate cancer and pre-conception health as well as a focus on the common chronic conditions affecting men such as obesity, diabetes, depression, sexual health and troublesome lower urinary tract symptoms. As well generating new knowledge as to the causes of and optimal way to treat men for these conditions, a central aim of the alliance is to ensure research translates into real world changes in clinical and public health practices. Our work to date has shown clearly that men do use health services and they do care about their health, Prof Wittert said. Great improvements can be made, relatively simply, through changes that ensure our health care system is catering for and communicating to men more effectively. This will be a particular focus for the Centre over the coming years. The FCMHW SA Division was officially launched on Monday, 8 February, following the successful launch of the Northern Territory Division in November 2020. The Centre is the evolution of the Freemasons Foundation Centre for Men’s Health which was established in 2007 and maintained through a $7.2 million dollar partnership between the Freemasons Foundation and the University of Adelaide. Masonic Charities, the charitable arm of Freemasons SA/NT is donating a minimum of $1.8 million over three years to the new Centre, funds that will be matched collectively by the research alliance partners. The Grand Master of the Freemasons SA/NT, Dr Neil Jensen, said the new centre will build on the foundation laid by its predecessor with an increased capacity to improve male health outcomes due to a stronger, broader network. We started at a time when men’s health was not really spoken about and it’s now in a far better place, Dr Jensen said. We’re very proud of what’s been achieved so far, but there’s still much work to be done and the Centre will play a pivotal role in the future. We are often asked, as Freemasons, ‘What do we do?’. Benevolence and serving the communities in which we live are at the core of Freemasonry. The Centre is a perfect example of the contribution made by Freemasons of SA/NT particularly given the positive impact that its work will have for males, their families and communities.

07.01.2022 Membership on the rise: The Brighton United Lodge No 10 are doing a First Degree this coming Tuesday and have six more applications in all from within the our own Lodge. With the work and commitment that has occurred recently from Grand Lodge there is know a keen interest across South Australia and the Northern Territory. The Grand Master and the Grand Lodge are promoting Freemasonry throughout our Constitution and the Membership applications are rolling in now, the Lodges need to make hay while the sun shines even with Covid-19 restrictions.

05.01.2022 Flooding on the floor of The Great Hall - caused by a blocked down-pipe on the western wall, with water flowing through an air-vent halfway down during a heavy downpour. An urgent call out for assistance and WBro James Sarah, managing director of Sarah Homes responded immediately with a boom lift at 6.30 this morning. The blockage involving miscellaneous detritus including a roll of duct-tape and was swiftly removed and thus avoided further repetitions. Well done to WB James Sarah with our grateful thanks, epitomising the finest principles and tenets of our ancient institution.

02.01.2022 Clare Installation Response by Grand Master - 5 Sept 2020 Thank you to .WBro Neil Fisher . For your toast and you Brethren for the manner in which you hono...ured it. Worshipful Master, Distinguished Guests, DGM, AGM, DGS, Ladies Gentlemen and Brethren, it is very satisfying to be present in an area where Freemasonry has been practiced since 1860. Its presence has had a positive impact on the development of this town and this district. It is disappointing for me that the last two years and four months have obliged the team of brilliant men and women with whom I have had the pleasure to work, to concentrate an enormous effort on matters around our administration. We, the members of that team, all love the pomp and ceremony surrounding Lodge Degrees and Installation work. However, you entrusted us with a task and we have matched that trust. Only on 1 June 2020 were we ready and confident to launch the MMXXI Membership Promotion. This has come on the back of an efficient use of current information technology through best practice programmes, enhanced data bases, less person centric and therefore less expensive office procedures, more meaningful and current news varying websites, an enhanced face-book presence, an ability to apply for membership online and so on. It was not until 1 June 2020 that most of this was available to be accessed by the public. Now, according to our finance committee, our operational budget is in the black. However, the Covid-19 Virus World Pandemic has impacted adversely on our capital budget because of the difficulty of hiring out space for functions in 254 North Terrace. The reduction in expenditure on operations has therefore been opportune. According to our membership committee, we are on the cusp of a 5% increase in NET membership. Such figures are easy to disregard until you realize that, to the best of my knowledge, no Grand Lodges have increased their numbers so significantly in the past year, except the Grand Lodge of England, which has increased by 3%; please bear in mind that they have much greater resources than we have. The credit for these positive results goes to the fine team of men, and women, involved. Before I became Grand Master, not through selection by Past Grand Masters, but through a democratic vote by the members who wished to vote, I was advised that we lacked talent in leadership. Brethren, I told you then and I tell you now, we do not lack talent; we have it. However, one must look for it, as I did, when I was Senior Grand Warden, again as Assistant Grand Master and now as Grand Master. Men now wishing to join our great fraternity are coming from a wide geographical area, and with interests over and above the perfect performance of ritual; they are looking to advance their insight into our fascinating fraternity; to enter their own journey of self- discovery; to understand what this peculiar system of morality is; how we have remained relevant to society for several centuries; what makes a Freemason? Of interest, we have just begun discussions on Ethics; many of you would know that ethics is a synonym of morality; morality is part of the answer to the question in our ritual from time immemorial: what is Freemasonry? The complete answer is known to all Freemasons. Older Freemasons, like me, have been familiar with morality and ethics and their practice for years, but our newer members seek answers ie a better understanding of the teachings that make a good man a better man. Well! Enough of the above! Let me tell you that it is with a sad heart that I am coming to the end of my term as your Grand Master; there is more to do and I will not cease until I have invested my successor, and whom that will be, is in your hands, as I was each year for three successive elections. Please keep working hard to make Lodge meetings interesting. When a young man of today, who lives in a world of artificial intelligence and rapidly changing technology, attends Lodge, he expects the opportunity cost of pleasures forgone to be met. I am confident that you will meet that opportunity cost, and in so doing, lend credence to the changes we have worked so hard to initiate. Freemasonry in South Australia and the Northern Territory, is now alive in the minds of an ever increasing proportion of the public and, like the mighty Mississippi River in the USA, is moving inexorably forward. Norma and I have enjoyed our couple of days in your beautiful town and district. We have shared in its distinctly Australian scenery, its elegant wines, its sumptuous foods and most of all, your company. May the Great Architect of the Universe bless you all! MWBro Dr Neil Jensen Grand Master 5 September 2020
