21.01.2022 ~ The Treasures & their Stories ~ _ My passion for collecting various flowers, berries and herbs began when I was just a child growing up in the highveld area of Johannesburg, South Africa. _ I would climb over our security gate & head into the mountain veld. I had no idea what my aim was but I collected all the goodies, put them in a pot and crushed them with things like a mash potato maker or wooden spoon. There was no big intention to have any end result, it was the proc...ess that intrigued me. _ Eventually I was caught eating some of these random treasures and my mom warned me about poison and other concerns that my young mind had not yet let into it’s sphere. I suppose that’s how we grow older, small moments like that. _ In some ways I still feel the same about herbalism. I love the process. Growing herbs, watching and waiting. Drying. Creating. And finally either consuming or using for the desired result. But I’ve been known to grow things for ages, and never harvest them. I just wanted to watch that time. Or harvest something and make a concoction only to let it sit on the shelf or be given away. I like the story. The evolution of the characters. The tales they tell me. See more

19.01.2022 Wow what a surreal weekend, spent amount the wildfires with the most incredible group of women . I got to present a Herbal Wisdom for Women workshop at @phyreretreats where we discussed old folk remedies, natural mood enhancers and aphrodisiacs, beauty products and made our own tub of body polish with all natural ingredients. We used some organic Baobab & Moringa powder and oil from @arcanabotanics, as well as some dried herbs, essential oils, syrups and tinctures. We made ...aphrodisiac cocktails and even soothed our hot skin with a traditional cold compress. . It was a beautiful experience to share this old traditional plant knowledge with such a receptive and earthy group of ladies. Very honoured and grateful for our combined powerful experiences at our Women’s Phyre Retreat on the weekend . . . @phyreretreats @arcanabotanics See more

16.01.2022 Ashwaganda _ Also known as Indian ginseng, or Withania in western herbal medicine. This gem that has been used for centuries in Ayurveda, translates to ‘the power of a horse.’ This is rather appropriate in that it helps to improve stamina and is traditionally used as a sexual tonic. Ka Pow! _ However this intelligent adaptogen not only improves power but it also helps to soothe & calm the nervous system as well as improve sleep. ... _ It’s also great for immunity and is often used as a complementary medicine during chemotherapy. Not to mention it’s anti-cancer properties. _ I love using Ashwaganda in cooking, tinctures, just about anything. It’s a powerful but safe herb & doesn’t really contraindicate with anything. This is certainly one of those that deserves a permanent spot on the herb shelf! x See more

12.01.2022 ~ Educate yourself on YOU ~ _ It’s a wild world at the moment with health being in the spotlight. In conventional medicine we are seeing a large focus on treatments in the space of: ~ Once already sick ~ One drug fits all... _ I believe that there are many other factors we should be focusing when it comes to our health such as: _ How well do I know my body What can I do to boost my health and PREVENT disease _ Here are some questions you can start asking to find out more about ur individual health needs: _ What are my health strong points and what are my weaker areas eg. I have a great immune system as I’m rarely sick, but I do struggle with sleep and hence need to work more on my nervous system. So look at what health challenges you have and try to work on those. Genetics - what diseases have effected my family members in the past? Are they genetically transferred conditions? And how can I prevent ‘activating’ that condition. What way of eating makes me feel good? eg. when I eat lots of healthy proteins and low carbs I feel better. Or my digestion works well with ayervedic food. When I eat dairy I feel phlegmy etc. What are my stress factors? And what steps can I take to reduce those? Science has now proved that stress alone can put us into a state of dis-ease. _ The above are all to help us PREVENT illness and PROTECT our health. Why wait until you are sick? _ With the current Covid situation it is important to keep our immune systems boosted with herbs, vitamins C, vitamin D, zinc, the list is endless which what we have available today. A healthy, nutritious diet is also a great way to stay on top of things and of course exercise does wonders. _ Mainly what I’m trying to say here is get to know yourself, dig deeper into what YOU as an individual needs and put yourself in the best position possible to take on whatever the future holds. _ As the old saying goes, prevention is better than cure See more

11.01.2022 Air that I breathe _ Lately I’ve been in awe of the life giving gift that is Oxygen. After a nasty tick bite I’ve been in recovery mode and doing what I can to eliminate the toxins. _... Yesterday I went for Ozone therapy. If you haven’t tried this - it’s amazing! Back in South Africa it’s very popular, especially to get rid of a hangover after a biggie But it wasn’t easy to tack down here in the northern rivers. Finally I found one and it was worth the search. _ Basically it’s like an Ayurvedic sauna, a little box you sit in with your head out. It releases pure O2 which triggers the healing response in your body. After about 5 minutes in there I dropped into a deep sense of calm. _ The healing benefits are endless and it’s great for killing infectious diseases such a tick-born illness but also things like Epstein Barr Virus, SARS & staph infections. _ Some people use it to reduce anxiety, some for diabetes, pain relief, the list goes on. _ I also just thought again about how the earth really has provided everything we need to heal. She gives endlessly & too often we take without giving back. _ So today I’m taking some time to be grateful for oxygen, air, breath, the space to be between. See more

10.01.2022 ~ Calendula Crazy ~ _ Woke up to the surprise of my calendulas blooming their hearts out on this chilly winters day. In just one little bed they vary from orange to bright yellow. They make me so happy just by looking at them! _ Calendulas are an amazing anti-inflammatory and are divine for healing conditions of the skin & gut.... You will often find them in skin balms but they can also be had fresh or dried in tea. _ I want to make something with them but to be honest I can’t bring myself to pick one at all! @ Byron Bay, New South Wales See more
09.01.2022 A spent some time yesterday harvesting and drying some herbs from the garden. Here we have lavender, curry leaf and pineapple sage. I have been working on my tying technique which should allow u to split the bunch into a ‘V’ so that you can easily hang then over a line. To dry I recommend leaving them in a dry, cool spot which gets a bit of a breeze. Near by a dehumidifier or fan can help. Avoid direct sunlight as it can brown and spoil the herbies. ... I have hung mine over a clothes horse so that I can easily move them around to a more suitable spot if need be! Just love this practise of harvesting and drying! I wrapped some lavender sticks up and made a smudge stick and the others I will put in a jar as use in the kitchen. From the garden to the table @ Byron Bay, New South Wales See more
08.01.2022 The access to Medicinal Cannabis in Australia is sadly in a awful state. People are suffering, with no other options, yet the one thing that may help is prohibited. I find it bizarre that some medical professionals would rather cut, radiate or poison before simply trying a non invasive plant, with almost zero dangerous side effects. I highly recommend watching this doco which highlights the situation. What do you think about it?

07.01.2022 ~ Buddha’s Hand~ ‘Citrus medical’ _ I found this alien-like medicinal citrus yesterday at a quint little store in #chillingham. This citrus has been prized for centuries in China & Japan as a symbol of happiness, longevity & fortune. The flesh is bitter but the rind can be ground to add flavour to stir-fries, curries & candies. _... It can also be ground to make a healing tea with its cleansing & anti microbial properties. _ It’s divine scent is also used as an air refresher, perfume & even as an ornament in ceremonies. _ Today I’m going to try out the tea as well as frying some rind with butter and garlic to drizzle on the Easter lunch See more

05.01.2022 Hawthorn Heart Syrup . I finally got to making this hawthorn berry honey infusion yesterday. And I tell you what this is messy business! Nevertheless after 7 hours my syrup was ready. .... Hawthorn is amazing for the heart and works at a cardio protective. It also helps reduce hypertension (high blood pressure) & high cholesterol. . Energetically it helps to open the heart chakra and let our feelings flow smoothly. . This honey syrup can be used to flavour foods and teas with it’s special medicinal touch. It can also be turned into a medicinal syrup by adding tinctures & infusions; which is what I plan to do with it next @ Ewingsdale, New South Wales, Australia See more

02.01.2022 Had an amazing time last week preparing the meals for Phyre Retreats. In each and every meal I included nutritious, energising ingredients to fuel our lovely ladies with plant based power. We sourced most of our veggies from local farmers in the Byron area and got a raw choccy cake made by a nearby friend starting her own small business. . We were also sponsored Baobab & Moringa powder and oils by Arcana Botanics for our smoothie bowls and herbal workshop - exotic plant power uuuh hu. . We like to keep it in the family ;)
02.01.2022 Last week @all_things_aroha and I attended the annual Australian Bushfoods conference. I was amazed at how many Bushfoods I had never even heard of! There seems to be so much traditional knowledge lost to western culture. Here we are importing herbs from around the world when there is plenty of healing medicine right here in our tropical rainforests and bush lands. . It is important to eat locally and even more important to support the traditional communities of Aus that hav...e gathered this knowledge over centuries. We must beware not to turn this into another mass commodity industry and work to support the First Nations people. Such a great day of learning from many knowledgeable teachers. Feeling super inspired to learn more about the medicine of this country and to work with it on my healing journey. @ Brisbane, Queensland, Australia See more

01.01.2022 ~ Which Hemp is what?! ~ _ Just to recap after my last video, here are some of the ways you can tell if you have Hemp SEED oil (culinary) or a Whole Plant Hemp oil (CBD/ therapeutic). _ Names... If it has the word SEED in it then you can assume it’s culinary hemp seed oil. _ CBD oil is the therapeutic version. This can also be called: Hemp oil, Whole Plant Hemp oil, Full Spectrum Hemp oil, Hemp extract, Cannabidiol-rich oil & more. (Share any other versions!) _ Price Culinary hemp seed oil is in a price range of roughy $20 - $50 depending on the size. _ CBD oil usually starts at over $100 for about 50ml. A standard price for CBD in Oz is about $170 for 1000mg in 50ml. *Remember it’s the ‘mg’ that matters more than the bottle size. _ MG Hemp seed oil will usually just state the ‘ml’ on the bottle - demonstrating the oil amount. _ CBD will state the ‘mg’ -which refers to cannabidiol content, as well as the ‘ml’ - which refers to the bottle size. _ Size Hemp seed oil is usually in bottles from about 250ml to 500ml. _ CBD is in smaller bottles such as 10ml, 30ml, 50ml, 100ml etc. If you got a 250ml bottle it would be seriously exy! _ Hope this little CBD checklist helps you find the right oil. If you have any other tips in spotting the difference, I would love to hear! See more
