Published on 5 April 2018 Council’s compliance team has discovered a major flaw in the latch system on popular swimming pool gates potentially affecting around 90,000 property owners in Australia. The NSW Ministry of Small Business & Fair Trading is now administering a voluntary recall of 80,700 swimming pool gates that have been sold across Australia. ... The product manufactured by SafeTech Hardware and on the market for more than four years can potentially stop gates from latching, meaning that unsupervised children can gain access to backyard swimming pools even when a pool gate is apparently locked. The types of gate latch manufactured by SafeTech Hardware are largely sold and distributed nationally through Bunnings. The faulty gate latches are: SafeTech Top Pull Gate Latch (Key Lockable) G8Safe Top Pull Gate Latch (Key Lockable) SafeTech TriLatch (Key Lockable) G8Safe TriLatch (Key Lockable) The latches are also available as part of the following kits: SafeTech Trade Packs (Key Lockable) G8Safe MegaPack (Key Lockable) Mayor Jennifer Anderson praised the Council’s compliance staff who first identified the design flaw during a regular monitoring program of local backyard swimming pools. The background to this investigation has been lengthy and complex, but is testament to the tenacity and investigative skills of our compliance staff and their commitment to public safety, the Mayor said. Once our staff had established without doubt that these gate latches posed a major risk to public safety, they alerted the manufacturer, the NSW Department of Local Government and the NSW Department of Small Business & Fair Trading. Ku-ring-gai has 15,161 swimming pools on the NSW swimming pool register and undoubtedly there will be pool owners in our community who will need to take preventative action as a result. The Mayor added that a short term solution would be for swimming pool owners to disable the key lock mechanism by removing the key from the striker, or fill the key hole with a waterproof adhesive. We recommend that gate checks be carried out regularly as part of ongoing pool maintenance.
