25.01.2022 Fremantle History Walking Tour asks is this the most boring looking building in Fremantle? Do you know where it is and what it used to be? This building is along the route that I take with my walking tour but time prevents me from telling the full history of this buildiing so I have posted a blog about the building at www.fremantlehistorywalkingtour.com.au which you might like to read. But in the meantime, if you would like to take one of my tours, then give me a call, Big Al, on 0412 933 360. #Fremantle #freo #freowalks #walkingtour#marineterracefremantle#esplanadefremantle#visitfremantle

22.01.2022 Fremantle History Walking Tour. Yesterday I had the opportunity to show Kylie and Mark around Freo and being Melbourne Cup day we took the opportunity to stop in at the Orient to have a drink and watch the race. The Orient is now Fremantle's longest running hotel, not withstanding the time it was shut down for a while when it was rebuilt around 1903/04. It grew out of the Emerald Isle hotel and it was at that hotel where John J Breslin stayed when he plotted the escape of the Fenians from Fremantle in 1876. The story of the Fenians is one of the many stories I tell on my tour of Fremantle so why not learn more about Fremantle and give me a call Big Al, on 0412 933 360. #Fremantle #Freo#highstreetfremantle #orienthotel#catalpa #fenians #visitfremantle #fremantleesplanade #fremantlevisitorcentre

22.01.2022 Fremantle History Walking Tour has experienced abit of a variety over the past fortnight. The fortnight started off with me escorting a group of eight people on my Dark Secrets of Fremantle Streets tour with one of them posting a good review of the tour on Trip Advisor. Then Volquor from Germany did a twighlight tour and this is always a pleasant time to do my tour as Fremantle has a different look about it at that time of day. And over the last couple of days my guests from Brisbane and Amsterdam have experienced some of the weather conditions that the early settlers first had to deal with. So there is plenty of variety with times and topics of my tours so give me a call, Big Al, on 0412 933 360. #Fremantle #freowalks #freo #freotours #visitfremantle #luvfreo #highstreet#warderscottages

22.01.2022 I have enjoyed the last few days as I have shown tourists around who have come from different parts of the world and in this post I am going to use some old fashion WA language to describe where they came from and no offence is intended. So I have played host to t'othersiders, poms and yanks. My American tourists were Megan and Abby who are with the USA Speedway Invasion tour so I wish their team good luck as they travel across Australia. And thanks to all those who made a co...mment on the Fremantle Doctor and so to us Portonians, an old colonial word that was applied to people from Fremantle, the description should only be applied when the breeze swings around to the south west in the afternoon. So if you would like to know more about colonial Fremantle, then give me a call Big Al on 0412 933 360 and book your tour.#fremantle #fremantleesplanade #freo #lovefremantle #luvfremantle #luvfreo#roundhousefremantle#rydgeshotelesplanadefremantle See more

21.01.2022 Was alot of fun showing Jillian and Phillip around Fremantle yesterday and it is always very encouraging when visitors talk so enthusiastically about Freo's charm and heritage. As locals, I don't think we really appreciate just how great a place Fremantle is. And that is something that should be understood by the City's planners as it is Fremantle's heritage buildings that has most appeal to the tourists. Glass fronted supermarkets can be seen the world over. It was also a ve...ry windy day yesterday and so here is a question for you. If on a summer's day the wind has blown all day from the south west can that breeze be called the Fremantle Doctor or does the name Fremantle Doctor only apply when the breeze swings around to the south west in the afternoon? All comments appreciated.#fremantleesplanade #Fremantle #freo #roundhouse #rydgeshoteltheesplanade #fremantledoctor #luvfreo #lovefremantle #lovefreo @ The Roundhouse See more

19.01.2022 Fremantle History Walking Tour - Had a great time showing Julie and her friends around Fremantle yesterday and even though they were all West Aussies I was able to correct some of the urban myths that prevail about Western Australia's history. This picture shows their group outside the Sail and Anchor where they were going for lunch. A group tour is a good way to do my tour as there are plenty of things to do after it and I can always change my walking route to finish at your preferred location. So book a tour by giving me a call, Big Al, on 0412 933 360. #Fremantle #freo #Roundhouse #highstreetfremantle #sailandanchorfremantle#rydgeseslanadehotelfremantle#esplanadehotelfremantle#cappuccinostripfremantle#fremantlevisitorcentre#sailandachorhotel

17.01.2022 Well, we have had some hot days lately, but it hasn't stopped the tourists from taking my tour and lately I have had tourists from Norway, Victoria and the gang from Bousefield's in Freo who took the opportunity to brush up on their history of Freo. So even if you have lived and worked in Fremantle all your life there is always more to learn about our beautiful city which is so well admired by our international and interstate visitors. So if you are looking for something to do this weekend, then how about booking a tour with me, Big Al, by calling me on 0412 933 360. #Fremantle #lovefremantle #lovefreo #luvfremantle #luvfreo #bousfields #bousfieldsfremantle #freostory #whalerstunnel #whalerstunnelfremantle

16.01.2022 Well, the weather hasn't been that good for walking tours lately, but I have still been able to show a few people around Freo. On Thursday I took four people from the American Consul on my American Connections to Fremantle tour and they found it very informative. There are more American connections to Fremantle than you might think so this is a good tour to recommend to any American friends or workmates. And yesterday I showed Emily and Jim and Linda around on my HIstory and ...Heritage tour and that is a good tour to do if you want to brush up your knowledge on Fremantle history. You can find details on all my tours at www.fremantlehistorywalkingtour.com.au or give me a call, Big Al, on 0412 933 360. #fremantle#lovefremantle#luvfremantle#luvfreo#luvfremantle#fremantlestory#fremantlehistory#americansinfremantle#americanconnectionstofremantle See more

16.01.2022 There were lots of Australian tourists walking around Freo yesterday which was a very positive outcome of the State of Origin game. And even though Murray and Kim were a couple of sad faced Queenslanders they were suitably impressed by both the new stadium and Freo which needs to be marketed as a top tourist double. But even if you are a local there is still plenty to learn about Freo, particularly the macabre deaths and suicides on Fremantle streets so why not think about doing my Dark Secrets of Fremantle Streets tour. So just give me a call, Big Al, of Fremantle History Walking Tour on 0412 933 360. #luvfreo #lovefremantle #rydgesesplanadehotel #stateoforigin #darksecrets #freowalkingtour #fremantleesplanade #luvfremantle #lovefreo

15.01.2022 Fremantle History Walking Tour - It has been just over two years since I started my walking tours and I would like to thank everybody who has supported me over that time; either through their support for my ambitions, or by taking my tour. It has been a pleasure showing all my guests around Freo and I look forward to being a tour guide for a few more years yet. And my guests continue to speak enthusiasticly of the beautiful buildings of Fremanle and all say how Fremantle must... not lose the charm of these buildings in the face of developmet pressures. It is the old buildings that attract the tourists in the first place and the bars and restaurants are a secondary attraction. So as a tribute to my suuporters I am posting a picture of Maggie and Gwen et al who were my first customers and I wish you all the best for Christmas and the New Year. And if you are looking for Christma gift ideas book some family and friends on my tour by giving me a call, Big Al, on 0412 933 360.#fremantlewalks #freostory #fremantleesplanade #freo #freowalks #rydgeseslanadehotelfremantle #bathersbeach#Roundhouse #highstreet #highstreetfremantle See more

14.01.2022 I hope you enjoy these two old photos of Fremantle. Taken from the same spot at the Roundhouse but about 10 years apart. So to learn more about Freo take my tour and see how Fremantle has changed over the years. 12.01.2022 As we celebrate, or at least take advantage of the Queen's birthday public holiday in WA, i thought I would try to find out how come we celebrate it when we do, but that proved to be no easy task and in the end it crosses over with two other pubic holidays. One of those is labour day, now celebrated in March and the other is the long gone public holiday of Proclamation Day. That day recognized WA becoming a state on 21 October 1890 and the tree pictured was planted on that d...ay and is known as the Proclamation tree. Anyway, the steps to this public holiday are that in around 1938 the WA govt adopted Labour Day as a public holiday in lieu of Proclamation day. And when Lizzie became Queen her birthday up until around 1967 was commemorated on 11 November. But at that time the business interests of the state thought it caused too much disruption because of its proximity to Xmas so it effectivlly vacated the date freed up by having abolished Proclamation Day. These are the stories I can share with you on my tour so give me a call, Big Al, on 0412 933 360. #freo #fremantle #freostory#walkfremantle#thingstodoinfremantle#proclaimationtreefremantle See more

10.01.2022 Fremantle History Walking Tour - Just recently the Fremantle History Society had its Xmas wind up at the Fremantle Artillery Barracks and if you haven't been there before, it is well worth a look. There are so many tales to tell of Fremantle and Western Australia that have a military connection and I cover many of these tales in my tour. For example, why was Perth located where it is? My tour is an authentic walking tour where the history is just as important as the heritage of the buildings, so if that is what you are looking for, then give me a call, Big Al, on 0412 933 360. #Fremantle #freo #roundhouse #fremantleartillerybarracks #arthurshead

10.01.2022 In today’s post I would like to tell my FB friends of a little known piece of West Australian, or Australian history for that matter, and show respect to a young man from Palmyra by the name of Max Rochfort who lost his life in the service of his country 79 years ago today. When the Fremantle History Society visited the Flying Angel Club the other week the attached plaque was pointed out to our group and where the wording on the plaque does not need any more comment from me, other than to point out that the date was wrong as the ship was sunk on the 16th September 1939. Fremantle has a lot of history which we don’t hear that much about and it is tales like this one that I like to share on my walking tour. So if you would like to know more about Freo’s history, then give me a call, Big Al, on 0412 933 360.

09.01.2022 Have you ever seen these plinths along High Street and wondered what they represent? Then do a walking tour with Fremantle History Walking Tour and I will be able to tell you of a link that an American President has with one of these two plinths. Just give me a call, Big Al, on 0412 933 360. #Fremantle #freotours #freostory #visitfremantle #luvfremantle #highstreetfremantle #westendofremantle

08.01.2022 There is a bit of irony associated with ny post today as on the weekend I showed Jeremy and Lee around Fremantle and I took their picture standing by my favorite tree in Fremantle, the big Moreton Bay Fig tree opposite the Esplanade hotel. #esplanadefremantlebyrydges. But then yesterday I showed Greg and Lorraine around town and Lorraine expressed her sadness in seeing one of the Moreton Bays in King's Square lopped to the ground. There are not that many Moreton Bays standin...g around Freo these days so maybe we should keep an inventory of them before others are found to be 'dying'. So if you know where they are, post their location as a comment. And if you would like to learn more of the Esplanade trees, then book a tour with me, Big Al, by calling 0412 933 360. #fremantleesplanade#fremantle moretonbayfigs#esplanadereservefremantle#ballandchainfremantle See more

06.01.2022 Fremantle History Walking Tour - Yesterday I showed Keith and Mary around Fremantle and this picture shows them exiting the tunnel under the Roundhouse. I start my tour from the Roundhouse hill as there is so much history in that part of Fremantle. The Roundhouse is one of four of Fremantle's prisons and so do you know what the other three are? One is obvious, but what do you know about the other two? To find out more, take my tour and give me a call, Big Al, on 0412 933 360. #fremantle #freo #Roundhouse #theroundhouse #whalerstunnel

04.01.2022 One of the best things about being a tour guide in Fremantle is meeting people from overseas and so the other day I had the pleasure of showing Stacey from Canada around and yesterday I had the opportunity to show four visitors from the UK around. And at the end of the tour they all rave about the old buildings of Fremantle. As I have said before, it is the buildings that attract people to Fremantle. And today I am going to add another attraction to our must see tourist sites..., (which I say faceitiously) and that is our Roman ruin, (pictured) which was once better known and loved as Fremantle's Wedding Wall. Like all Roman ruins they are good to look at but they don't have any purpose. The wedding wall used to be a colorful attraction in the West End, but now that Notre Dame have removed the art work, it is as I say, nothing but a Roman ruin. Notre Dame should reinstate the old art work, or commission some new art work to add abit of colour into one of Fremantle's busiest and historic streets and bring the Brides with their wedding parties into the West End. #fremantle#freo#lovefremantle#luvfremantle#luvfreo#lovefreo#cliffstreet#fremantlesromanruin#romanruin#weddingwall#fremantlesweddingwall#fremantlestory See more

03.01.2022 I have had a few people take my tour over the past week so I am able to show Mavis and Paul and Elizabeth sitting on the most photographed seat in Fremantle. And why are Murray and Sandy standing on either side of a block stone? Well, to find out the significance of that plinth, then take my tour by giving me a call, Big Al, on 0412 933 360. #fremantle #freotours #freo#visitfremantle#luvfremantle#theesplanade

01.01.2022 Fremantle History Walking Tour. Yesterday I attended the Fremantle History Society's Studies Day which was an afternoon of essays about Fremantle during and at the conclusion of walking tours. So if you would like to learn more about Fremantle, then give me a call Big Al, on 0412 933 360. It looks like spring has finally arrived so it will be great weather for a walk around Fremantle. #Fremantle #freo#luvfremantle#luvfreo#highstreet#visitfremantle #thingstodoinfremantle #freowalks #fremantlewalks
