10.01.2022 ART CHANGES LIVES Im an artist, a designer, and a maker... I was lucky enough to go to art school, and I pursued many creative interests, with the vision to ma...ke it my profession. I have been employed by Jacksons Drawing Supplies and Faber Castell. I have worked on large Community and Public Art Projects. I was on the construction team that built the historical 1606 replica sailing ship, The Duyfken, in Fremantle. I have worked in numerous community development programs, using the arts to work with at-risk youth, people with disabilities, the elderly, migrants, womens groups, and unemployed. I have worked in Art Therapy, giving people with disabilities, a new experience of life, a voice, and a sense of purpose. Watching them blossom and grow from someone who had never done art before, to someone who discovers themselves through their own creativity, creating a body of work that becomes an exhibition, and receiving awards for their skill; is an incredible thing to witness, and participate in. Creativity is what I live and breath. It is a gift that I have shared in many, many ways. It has allowed me to contribute to society, and to our communities, in ways that are unfathomable to comprehend. The difference that can be made to peoples lives, through engaging in, participating in, or experiencing the arts, is not to be taken for granted. Ive witnessed a person, who was completely unmanageable, and had to have one-on-one, continuous supervision at all times, discover the world of painting... and in his discovery, became engaged, focused, and driven; and found a sense of purpose not previously experienced. Instead of ranting and raving and being destructive, he created... and ended up winning an award for his work. I was told by many, that the arts is a difficult field to succeed in. I was told; dont do it... get a real job... get a job that pays well, so you can do art in your spare time... no-one will pay you what you are worth... In art school I was told by my lecturers; get a job that pays well so you can support your arts practice... no-one will pay what your artwork is really worth... there are very limited support networks for the arts... there are arts grants, but not for Western Australian Artists... NAVA has worked tirelessly to change this... I discovered that there is a part of our cultural experience, that has a limited appreciation for the arts. It is considered by many, a luxury item for the extremely wealthy. It is considered by many as superfluous to society, a hobby, or a nice pass-time for the frivolous. This is the voice, and the perception, that has us cut funding for the arts... This is the view that has art seen as unimportant, and de-valued... and reduces our arts networks, and advocates, and supporting bodies... and diminishes the creative potential of our society. I also discovered that we do not exist without the arts. It is in every single thing we do... hairstyles, magazines, adds on tv, our clothes, the fashion industry, our stories, the chairs we sit on, the ergonomics of our computer keyboard, the wallpaper in our house, the wrapping paper on our birthday gift, the packaging on on our food, our shoes, our cars, the songs on the radio, the toys we buy our children, the movies we watch, the books we read, the dances we dance, the design of our homes, the buildings we work in, the design of our cities and communities, the cup Im drinking my coffee out of... Remove all of this from our life, and what we you have? The arts is actually the biggest contributor to EVERY industry we have. And creative thinking (what the arts does best) is now the catch-cry of every leading corporate model for development. We simply cannot exist without the arts. And if we were to dare to consider, what we could really achieve, if we actually used the arts to its fullest potential and capacity; we could literally change the world. There are societies in this world that revere the arts... and I dont mean the Rembrandts and Leonardos on the wall in the Louvre. There are nations and peoples, whos entire language, identity, and existence, is contained in the arts. There are nations who hold an artist, in the same esteem as a doctor, or a lawyer. There are places where the arts are valued as the highest of orders, and are considered imperative to a societys development and success. Art gives us a voice, a form of expression, and a way to participate in society, and experience life. It brings a sense of wonderment to people, and a greater capacity to believe in whats possible. The physical act of making something, or actively doing something, with our own two hands, with our own bodies, and our own selves; empowers us and enlivens us. At our very core; every single one of us is a creator, and the arts gives us a direct access to that. Many of my jobs and opportunities in the arts, did not come about, without the support and advocacy, of our arts organisations, and our government arts sector. Almost every community program I have participated in, was supported by arts funding; and many years of advocating and campaigning to our government, for changes that resulted in these opportunities being made available. One of the most significant contributions I can comment on, that has made a profound difference to my career as an artist, is the work done by (now defunded) NAVA. In our country, we have rights and guidelines and practices in place to protect our workers, and our workforce. We have a minimum wage standard that all employers must meet. Did you know that Artists, and Designers, and Makers, and Sculptors, and Performers, and Writers, and Musicians... were NOT included in our minimum wage policy? Because of this, it has been a constant battle for artists to be paid anywhere near their true worth. Did you know that; for the first time in history, in this country, there is now a minimum wage standard for artists across the board. This is a very new development, only a few years active, and has only been achieved by many years of hard work from NAVA; advocating and campaigning for the value of our artists. It wasnt our government that fought for these basic rights and standards, for the largest, and least valued, industry in Australia. It was a small group of people who believed in a bigger and brighter future. It is still a battle to be paid for our true value, but we now have a document, and a government standard, to use in our support, and pursuit of our value and contribution. I worked in the arts for 20 years, without a minimum wage in place. Can you imagine the difference this makes to arts workers, coming out of their training, knowing that there is a government standard for them, in the work force ? What will it be like when we no longer have this support and advocacy for the Arts. NAVA is the ONLY national visual arts body we have, supporting the visual arts and multidisciplinary arts across the board... and they are about to go out of existence. I grew up in a very poor household, with a single parent. My mum worked many jobs to keep food on the table. She worked hard, made all our clothes, and believed in all of our dreams. I remember when I was 11 years old, my Mum took me out of school one day a week, to be trained by a tailor, at a community centre that built capacity and employment skills, through creative practices. This was my first experience of the value and contribution that the visual arts, and creative pursuits, provides us at a community level. Culture and creativity is not a luxury available only to the wealthy. The arts is something that is for everyone; and it provides the most benefit to those facing the most difficult of challenges, and adversities in life. It makes the biggest difference to those who are running out of options and answers. It is the key to new pathways. Does our government have no comprehension of the true value of the arts, and the good that it can do, the true contribution that it is, and the dollars that can really be saved, by using the arts to their fullest potential ? By attempting to save money, and making cuts to the arts; they are actually creating great gaping holes in our society, that will be very costly in the long term. This will affect community development, mental health, community capacity, creative development, business development, criminal behaviour, and more than we can imagine... Value is so much more than dollars and cents. Value is the difference that is made to someones life, to their experience of their own self worth, and their capacity to be a part of, and contribute to, their community and the world. This is the difference between a kid spending their time being industrious, and creating something magnificent, participating in a festival with a creation that lights up and inspires 1000s of people... versus; being the kid in a gang on the train station, that attacks someone because they didnt hand over their wallet fast enough, and ending up in jail at the age of 13 because they kicked someone nearly to death. This is the difference I have made in my arts practice, and I am just one artist. Where do we really want to put our value ? My arts practice has given me numerous opportunities to work with youth development programs, team building and leadership programs, children at risk, outreach programs, kids refused by the school system due to difficult behaviour, marginalised communities, young people and adults with learning disabilities, aged care and dementia sufferers, and public schools in the lowest socio-economic areas of Perth. Without the support of funding, and the organisations that support these programs; I would not have had the opportunity to make a difference to these people, and to these parts of our society. The creative potential of our society is dependent on our ability to nurture, and cultivate, our creative capacity. Reduce the value of creativity, and you reduce society. You reduce joy, you reduce success, you reduce effectiveness, you reduce experience and value of life, you reduce ingenuity, you reduce purpose and possibility... Some of our most important organisations are facing forced closure, after generations of contribution to our Australian culture. As an artist I DEPEND on these organisations for industry information, global and local arts opportunities, arts jobs, and issues that effect my industry and career. ALL of the other arts organisations I am a member of, and use as a resource, depend on and obtain their information from NAVA. By extinguishing NAVA, we also lose the key resource of ALL our other arts organisations. There is no-one that will not be effected by this. For the enormous amount of work NAVA has done for the community, the arts industry, and the nation of Australia, to be killed off, and to go out of existence; is a crime and a travesty. The arts is at the core of everything we do... The arts is vital to our sense of identity, and our wellbeing... The arts is part of who we are... https://visualarts.net.au/news-opinion/2016/call-to-action/
