25.01.2022 The Western Australian Shipwrecks Museum presents the spectacular exhibition // Deep Light: Illuminating the Wrecks of Sydney and Kormoran // Dates: Sat 12 Sep 2020 Sun 31 Jan 2021 Times: 9:30am 5:00pm... Entry to this exhibition is free. The World War Two encounter between HMAS Sydney (II) and the disguised German raider HSK Kormoran off the Western Australian coast stands as Australia’s most tragic naval disaster. 81 men from Kormoran were killed and 318 survived. The lives of all 645 men on Sydney were lost. For more than 66 years, the location of the two ships remained a mystery. Then, in 2008, the Finding Sydney Foundation and shipwreck expert David Mearns found the wrecks off Shark Bay. In 2015, the WA Museum and Curtin University, with vital assistance from DOF Subsea, the Commonwealth Government and other supporters, returned to the wreck sites. Using remotely controlled equipment, the team captured stunning underwater images that revealed the fate of the ships on the seabed, over two kilometres beneath the waves. These images revealed a remote world of solemn loss, filled with wondrous creatures and surprising colour. This poignant exhibition showcases remarkable images and footage captured during the expedition, interviews with the research team, the moving 3D film From Great Depths, and personal reflections from descendants and family members of Sydney's crew. Might of the Superheroes! will be presented during the Western Australian school holidays commencing Monday 5 through to Friday 9 October 2020 from 11am through to 2.30pm at Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour and Bathers Beach. A free entry, family friendly event.... A growing pop culture phenomenon, Superheroes have captured the imagination of people throughout the world with their daring and impossible superhuman feats and acts of valour. Across a scenic Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour and Bathers Beach, Superhero characters will arrive in all their glory including Spiderman, Batman, The Incredible Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Ironman, Megatron, Optimus, Bumblebee and Groot. Meet and greet as well as photo opportunities will be on offer as well as giant Transformers characters towering over the majestic waters of the harbour. Bouncy castles and face painters will be throughout the harbour and venues, providing a Superhero theme in keeping with the event. Patrons will be invited to attend the event in their favourite superhero costume providing a colourful panorama across the harbour. On the final day of Might of the Superheroes children will be encouraged to participate in a parade in their favourite superhero costume.
