18.01.2022 FIPP 2010 2019 All good things must come to an end. The FIPP Committee recently decided that FIPP 2019 would be our last; committee members having spent hundreds of hours voluntarily planning, organising, and conducting FIPP over a decade. The Fremantle International Portrait Prize (FIPP) ran its first photographic competition in 2012. We staged our Fifth FIPP last year in 2019. In that time FIPP received more than 7,500 photographic entries from 48 countries, awarded more ...than $50,000 in cash and prizes to entrants and donated over $90,000 to charity. More than 20,000 people visited the five FIPP Showcase Exhibitions in Fremantle, Western Australia. FIPP is proud to have run one of the world’s foremost and ethical photographic competitions which has helped to put arts in Fremantle on the map. FIPP started in 2010 with zero funds and, after paying our prize money and donating to charity, remains in a strong financial position. In formally closing FIPP has distributed remaining funds to the two charities we have continued to support, namely The Arthritis Foundation of Western Australia and the Kai Eardley Fund. FIPP is extremely proud of its achievements and its contribution both to the arts and to charity. We are equally proud of the work of our hundreds of volunteers and support from Sponsors. In particular, we wish to thank you, the entrants. Each and every one of you for entering FIPP. Some of you are multiple entrants and some have been with us from the very beginning. Without you, the entrants, none of this would have been possible.

17.01.2022 Visit Fremantle Ports Maritime Day at Fremantle today. Then post your image on Instagram with hashtag #maritimedayfreo... by Sunday night 3 Nov and you will be in the running for three fantastic prizes thanks to FIPP sponsor Fremantle Ports - including a $150 voucher for Roma Cuccina Restaurant.

16.01.2022 Trish Ainslie, TAFE graduate, acclaimed photo-journalist and co-author* of Off Like Flies and a half dozen other photography books visited FIPP yesterday. "This is by far the best portrait photography exhibition Ive seen in Australia in the last few years. The quality and variety of images set the benchmark in Australia. *co-author with Roger Garwood... FIPP open 10am-4pm all weekend. Moores Gallery, Henry St Fremantle.

16.01.2022 Before the official announcement

15.01.2022 If you missed the FIPP 2019 Showcase Exhibition or you would like to revisit the images, ALL winners and FINALISTS can now be viewed on the official FIPP website. https://fipp.org.au/ Do you have a favourite?

15.01.2022 This morning at FIPP were Des Lewis, Richard Goodwin, Tara Michelle DePaolo, Frank and Marree Daly, Michelle Hyland and 20 St Hildas photography students ... and ... John Summerfield (pictured).

15.01.2022 Inside the Minds of the Judges Why was that image a winner? What were the judges looking for? If the image has been seen widely on social media, does it make a difference?... How did you judge over 1800 images without scores? These, and a dozen other questions were put to three FIPP judges by 30 photographers at the Meet the Judges evening last night. Chris Rowett, Karin Calvert and Lyn Whitfield-King discussed te philosophy of judging, including technique, narrative and how to make the judges remember YOUR image. They then went on to critique selected images, including the 2019 winners of the Camera and Mobile sections. One finalist: "Thank you for the opportunity to listen to the judges tonight. I thought they were great. It was really good to get their feedback. I appreciate all the work you and Margaret put into FIPP. It is the first comp I have entered and it has been a very positive experience. Kathy" photo: Duncan Dodd

14.01.2022 LAST TWO DAYS Winner of the Stewards Prize FIPP 2019 for Mobile Phones Laura Holdsworth ... Fremantle, Western Australia You Dont Always Get What You Want Pulling into Warroora Station, 14 Mile Beach, Western Australia, to be enlightened by the Caretaker that Freo had won against Port Adelaide and Nic Nat had done his knee, which made this little guys Dads day but not his. Comments from Duncan Dodd, Assistant Steward, who selected this image. I thought there were several elements to the image that were thought provoking. The expression on the subjects face immediately evokes the imagination as to why he looks so angry or upset and the myriad of possibilities it could be. The addition of the Sea Shepherd T- shirt makes you wonder if he is protesting about the situation at hand or something else? The Caretaker sign could be a taken as a reference to the Dockers coaching which was very topical when the image was first viewed. The uncluttered surrounding with mainly strong horizontal and vertical lines reproduced as a B&W image eliminated colours that may have been distracting. The Fremantle connection also added to the overall result. An image captured on a mobile device that may not have been otherwise captured. The FIPP Showcase Exhibition closes tomorrow, Sunday 27 October at 4pm. Open 10am-4pm daily. Vote for your favourite entry in Viewers Choice FIPP 2019 proudly sponsored by Nikon Australia, Fremantle Ports and the City of Fremantle.

10.01.2022 DREAMY SUNDAY Winner of the Mobile Phone First Prize 2019 Sarah Fairbanks, Kensington Park, South Australia Prize $1000 - sponsored by Camera House Fremantle... "I had just washed Joshs hair, the bath water had gone milky with soap. He closed his eyes, and suddenly the light through the window made him look like a painting, almost otherworldly. I ran to the kitchen and grabbed my phone before the moment was gone" The FIPP 2019 Showcase Exhibition closes this Sunday at 4pm. Moores Building Contemporary Art Gallery, Henry St Fremantle. Open 10am-4pm daily until 27 October. Vote for your favourite image in Viewers Choice.

10.01.2022 Stewards Prize* The Rammy Award - Camera ABANDONED Russell Smith Dalyellup Western Australia... "Blissfully distracted by our photo session, my granddaughter hadnt noticed her mother had slipped away in the car without her. Happiness turned into tears as she bolted for the open gate. With her safety in mind and my empathy hitting a temporary low, I closed the gate and continued to shoot the deep sense of abandonment" Dale Neill (Chief Steward) comment: This was my choice from more than 1600 camera entries. Interestingly, this image was not a finalist. This portrait has genuine emotion in spades - the hiding, face-push and glistening eye. The photographer has used selective focus brilliantly. Both foreground and background are out of focus but are still a powerful part of the narrative. The decision to use black and white over colour contains and transmits the mood. Finally, its different! Very, very different to a conventional portrait. It made me stop and look and go back and look a dozen times - that leading line and blurry farm gate was the clincher. *(Each of the two stewards selected their favourite image irrespective of the judging results). The FIPP Showcase Exhibition closes in 3 days - 4pm Sunday 27 October. Open daily 10am-4pm. Moores Building Henry St Fremantle. Vote for YOUR favourite image in Viewers Choice for yoyr chance to win a $100 voucher from the Local Hotel in Fremantle. Major sponsor: Nikon Australia Proceeds to: The Arthritis Foundation of WA and the Kain Eardley Foundation. (Mental Health for Youth)

Masada, which was once a symbol of the destruction of the Jewish people is now a symbol of life and hope, as a new Torah, which is the moral compass of the Jewish people, is written."
