20.01.2022 For 16 days in November and December, the community is invited to take a part in a major effort to encourage change to stop violence against women. The annual ‘16 Days in WA Stop Violence Against Women’ campaign takes place from 25 November, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, to 10 December, which is Human Rights Day. 18.01.2022 A section of the Prison kitchen was originally the bakehouse where prisoners made fresh bread rolls and cakes. During the convict era, the bread was baked to the size of a man’s ration, which was approximately one-third of a loaf of bread. However, the Surgeon at the time believed that fresh bread was unwholesome, so the bread was kept for a day before being served and eaten. 16.01.2022 This weekend our Gatehouse will light up purple and blue in support of Huntington’s Disease awareness month. The Light It Up 4 HD initiative originated in Canada in 2015, when a volunteer arranged for the CN Tower to be lit up in blue and purple, blue representing Huntington’s Disease (HD) and purple representing Juvenile HD. From humble beginnings the Light It Up 4 HD initiative has become an annual global event. Huntington’s Disease is an inherited degenerative neurologic...al condition affecting areas of the brain that control movement, cognition and behaviour. Symptoms usually appear between the ages of 30 and 50 with a slow decline over 10 to 15 years. A person with a parent with Huntington’s Disease has a 50% chance of inheriting the disease. Early symptoms include slight uncontrollable muscular movements; stumbling and clumsiness; lack of concentration and short-term memory lapses; depression and mood changes. As the disease progresses, a person may experience many different symptoms including difficulty in speech and swallowing, weight loss, and emotional changes. Cognitive changes may result in a loss of drive, initiative and organizational skills. There may be difficulty in concentrating on more than one thing at a time. In the later stages of the disease, full nursing care will be needed as a person loses the ability to be independent in their self-care, is unable to speak or walk. Currently there is no cure. Huntington’s WA provides advocacy education and support services to enable the best possible quality of life for people impacted by HD. Moolarvie Many of the murals and works of art in the Fremantle Prison Collection depict bush scenes and landscapes, in silhouette at sunrise or sunset. The Carrolup influenced paintings in Fremantle Prison are not direct observations from Nature, but were completed on reflection of memories and experiences from the outside. These paintings have a dream-like imaginative quality, evoking the artist’s cultural bond to c...ountry. Prior to 1991 a small number of prisoners were given special permission to paint artworks on the walls of their cells. Although these prisoners were well behaved and talented, art as a privilege was in effect a method of behavioural management. For example, R. Moolarvie was granted a special dispensation to paint his artworks in Fremantle Prison.
