16.01.2022 Easter in our city today We live in a country where the significant public holidays of Easter and Christmas are based on Christian European celebrations.. We note the spring time flowers and new life of Spring whilst Christmas in the snow is the story of many carols for the winter season Although autumn is in full swing and winter is coming in the Southern Hemisphere, rabbits ... and eggs as symbols of spring remain part of Australian festivities. On Easter Sunday, the Easter bunny will deliver chocolate eggs to children and there will be egg hunts in backyards and parks across Australia.Christian Australians will attend church services and All the while, the chocolate bunnies and eggs serve as a reminder of Easter's ancient origins and Christian traditions.There will be many Australians sitting in churches on Sunday, celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ more than 2000 years ago after he died on the cross on Good Friday. Whilst the majority of secular Australians will enjoy the four-day weekend feasting and relaxing with family and friends.It doesn't hurt anyone to consider the Christian message that the holiday inspires - that we should love one another, show compassion and care for the poor and outcast and aspire to peace These things are almost universal aspirations across humanity, and worth taking a minute, between unwrapping those chocolate eggs or bilbies, to think about on Sunday. We all need to remember as many have said "The great gift of Easter is hope." The challenge for everyone of us is to share and to care so the world around us might be a safer and better place because we have taken on the meaning of the Easter story and showed our love for one another. 14.01.2022 This year we will be celebrating Passion Sunday on March 21 and Palm Sunday on March 28 It is the year of Mark so I want to encourage you all to read chapters 14 and 15 I hope to have some material to assist with the understanding of the text next week at our Lenten Eucharist service ... The Gospel of Mark brings a special way of understanding of the story of Jesus’s passion It requires you to dismiss the other Gospels and see the unique way the early church expressed its belief in Christ and the struggles of the disciples and others in the story Palm Sunday we will be reading the Markan version of the entry into Jerusalem Mark 11:1-11 There will be devotional material prepared for Holy week Monday 29 March till Easter Day on the 4th April. Copies will be available electronically and also hard copies. There will be an article on Marks story of the Passion from a New Testament Scholar that provides an insight for the understanding of Passion Sunday See more
