24.01.2022 Another day in paradise

20.01.2022 Our new Cottage & Campers combo package allows bigger groups to experience our off-the-grid style luxury. And what a lovely bunch they were.

20.01.2022 Generous people gave over $2,600 to buy the 1000 trees Mylene and I have just finished planting. Thank you so much. Three friends alone gave $1,700 and we expec...t them to come and see their trees soon. As promised other donors of $100 went into a draw for a night's stay in our cottage. Today we have the result. 18.01.2022 Today's guests chose pesto and veggie curry, to celebrate a 50th birthday, on French Island of course. Mylene's magic.

17.01.2022 Hanging round on the verandah

16.01.2022 Out front this morning.

16.01.2022 There's always some amazing wildlife to see.... These guys are active right now

16.01.2022 Mother koala and child

15.01.2022 Golden lichen on a burnt stump.

15.01.2022 Loving these misty mornings... and it's not all cottage accomodation, we do camping as well. Two of these are camp sites.

15.01.2022 it’s been an absolute pleasure!

14.01.2022 Mylene's COVID qualified and we just had our first visitors since lockdown. The cottage was clean and safe, plus what they said "cosy and beautiful." Perfect for an overseas holiday, when you can't go overseas.

13.01.2022 Last night's guests were also bird watchers. They saw: Red-browed finch kookaburra peacocks... grey fantail red wattlebird grey butcherbird white-browed scrub hen brown thornbill currawong grey brush bronzewing magpie raven little shelduck shrike thrush grey welcome swallow new holland honeyeater white eared honeyeater restless flycatcher swift parrot. Our place is good for twitchers.

13.01.2022 Koalas are booming. French Island is a haven for healthy, breeding koalas. There are so many we supply the mainland, and places like Kangaroo Island. Koalas live on our property all year round. There are lots of birds and echidnas too, as we have no foxes. 70% of the island is National Park (11,100 hectares). The recent bush fire impacted just 85 hectares, a long way from where we are. Reporting in the press was, understandably, a little hyped. ... At French Island Cottage it’s business as usual. Vehicle access is via the barge, running all year, in all weather.

12.01.2022 There's a new kid on the block... and the ducks are nervous

12.01.2022 Long purple flag (patersonia accidentalis). Native flowers tend to be small, but look great when they occur in masses

12.01.2022 Even the gloom can look promising

10.01.2022 Because there are no foxes on French Island, we get a lot of birds visiting, including wild peacocks.

09.01.2022 Last year we began restoring our heathlands... Blown away by what comes up.

09.01.2022 It's been damp... and the dam has become a lake.

07.01.2022 We just received this lovely, old fashioned letter. A few highlights: "Thanks for a lovely stay in your delightful cottage.... We loved the peace and quietness and the call of the birds in the early morning... curry luncheon, so unexpected, but hugely enjoyed...You are two very generous and charming people."

05.01.2022 An anniversary celebration

05.01.2022 We love our guests. #frenchisland #wildlifeconservation #coastal #naturelover #

04.01.2022 Dennis reckons planting trees is a bore, but we are excited to get started on our first Avenue of trees, named in honour of our biggest donor Brent Davis. You can still be a part of this. We still need money for the last 330 trees... $2.80 each. All donations go direct to the French Island Landcare account BSB: 633 000 ACNT: 151 902 947... 04.01.2022 This is pure carbon, saved from the leaves and small branches of an old wattle. The tree roots stay in the ground. Larger limbs we burn in winter to stay warm. Our electricity and water are from nature. We are lucky. Off the grid with a low carbon footprint

02.01.2022 Check this out.

02.01.2022 Today I planted the last tree for this season. I had kept 40 over, to fill gaps and replace goners. Only one replaced and over 1000 doing well, settling in for... spring and summer. It's a great outcome in a crazy year! Next year we'll be back. None of this would have been possible without our wonderful donors. To you we say... See more
