16.01.2022 What's on your mind? - on mine are the Council Elections. As most of you - I love our little pip-squeak City, and like many of you - I am worried where it is go...ing. I raised my hand and joined the Candidates for Councillor in the current City of Bunbury election. I will be highly honoured if I am elected to represent everyone of you. I am number 1 on the ballot paper. I live in Bunbury almost 40 years, my son was born here, my children, all studied here. We all love our City, it is an excellent place to live and to raise children. There is several issues which many of you find disturbing and which I raise as primary concerns: 1. Oppose any rate rise above the CPI Index for the next three years and propose a rate freeze for the next three years. There was no justification for this years rate rise, whilst there is a surplus! 2. Oppose strenuously waste of $40 million to build a Cultural Centre in Bunbury. As one of the other Candidates pointed out - 94% of Bunbury Residents oppose this concept - yet, current Councillors voted for it! It was against the wishes of their own Constituents! The Council is ready to spend $3million on a "Feasibility Study" for the project, this money would pay for at least half of the Ocean Pools! or two years worth of Sport Complex development. $3million would allow upgrade of most of the City street lights to LED lights Onslow small town, after replacing they lights save over $120,000 p.a. on electrical bill alone. BRECK cost $2.5million to build in 1989, since then every year ratepayer’s fork between $400,000 - $500,000, just to keep it afloat. How much will it cost us as the Ratepayers and Taxpayers to keep $40million afloat?!? Where is the supposed profit from the purchase of South's building? It was purchased for $2.4million, today's valuation is at best $2million - building is empty. If supporting Councillors use their own money - I am fine with that - but not Ratepayers and Taxpayers money! 3. Building the City as a Tourist Destination - many items were proposed on the previous election - none were even considered, all of these would be unique to Bunbury and except sunken ship, none exist anywhere in WA: a. Building Ocean Pools on the Back Beach b. Building an artificial reef and maybe a sunken ship c. Building a Skate Park to international standards d. Moving the railway station back to the City would invigorate it, would attract new business and tourists will be delighted visiting new skate park, artificial reef and ocean pools within five minute walk from the station 4. Improve street lights in the Suburbs 5. Improve public transport - current buses travel mostly empty, they are a rarity and too big. Research shows that buses should go in not more than 15min intervals and public would support them. We do not need large buses, 15 to 30 passengers vehicles would be cheaper and less costly to operate. Shuttle service (stop on demand) on Victoria Street between Library and Lighthouse would ease the congestion and allow to leave a parked car at either end. 6. Property value freeze it will allow to lower the rent without diminishing the value of the property. Lower rent would attract more tenants to the City. 7. Enhance public security by better utilisation of existing resources. 8. Creation of Mental Ward and Drug Rehabilitation Centre would be beneficial for families in needs of these services. Currently, People in need are transported to Perth, sometime sedated. Statistics show that 1 in 5 people have some problems, that actually 1 in 20 have serious mental problem requiring intervention and 1 in 50 require hospitalisation this help, desperately needed, is not available in Bunbury. I am convinced that implementation of these proposals, would keep our City alive and will provide needed employment and development. If you want to organise your local neighbourhood to meet me and raise your concerns - I am available to listen, and if I can - to help. For any of your concerns do not hesitate to contact me, I usualy answer all my e-mails and messenger within 24hrs.
