25.01.2022 Fresh Start not only looks after its patients but also looks after its staff! On Friday the 14th of August, a morning tea was held at the Palms Community Centre as a thank-you to all staff for their efforts and ongoing commitment to Fresh Start this year. Certificates were also handed out to the COVID heroes, as recognition of their contribution to keeping Fresh Start operational during COVID-19 and responding to new and changing circumstances with great professionalism. A very lovely morning tea, good company and a team building activity which involved themed cake decorating in groups, which were later Judged by Judy was enjoyed by all that attended. Thank-you to everyone in attendance and were certain the Fresh Star cake really stands out!

21.01.2022 We are asking for donations so that we can get the first stage of our Fresh Start Busselton Family Camp Site open. The first $150,000 in donations will help us open up the initial accommodation on the site. Please support us by clicking on the image (or the link) below and make a donation to this wonderful cause. Your donation will help families that have been affected by drug and alcohol addiction to reunite and heal. Please feel free to share this post to help with the fund...ing of the Fresh Start Family Centre in Busselton. What better place could one find than a holiday for the whole family on one of the most beautiful beaches on earth. It is too difficult for families to invite those in early recovery home but meeting at a holiday location like the Busselton Family Camp site will lift their spirits. https://www.gofundme.com/f/84g4z-family-reunification

17.01.2022 Fresh Start staff were very pleased to recently attend a group training session presented by The Alcohol, Other Drug and Prevention Services - Mental Health Commission. The session was presented by trainers Grace Oh and Leigh Cleary who delivered a highly informative and engaging Naloxone and Overdose Awareness Training. The training highlighted the risks and dangers of combining opioids and other sedative type substances e.g. alcohol and benzodiazepines, and showed the staff... how to respond to overdose situations using the Naloxone treatment. The staff were very enthusiastic about the presentation and expressed their appreciation for the excellent training they received from Grace and Leigh. They now feel confident about using this treatment. Naloxone kits are kept in the Subiaco Clinic, in the York Street Office and in both of the York Street vehicles and are available for trained staff to administer.

15.01.2022 Fresh Start's Northam Recovery Programme is honoured to be part of the exciting new project Humans of the Wheatbelt. This project involves the participants either being interviewed or photographed by a person with a disability to encourage inclusion for all in the Wheatbelt. So far, 11 Fresh Start staff and residents have been interviewed for Humans of the Wheatbelt and two were fortunate enough to make it in to the book which was officially launched a couple of weeks ago. 15...0+ interviews have been completed, with 50 having made it into the first edition of the book. The recent Humans of the Wheatbelt book included a function that was attended by the deputy Premier and health minister Roger Cook, the leader of the national party, Mia Davies and senator Jordan Steele-John. The Humans of the Wheatbelt book is now available at all Wheatbelt Libraries, CRC and Shire offices across the Wheatbelt. Fresh Start is proud to work closely with the Wheatbelt Health Network and looks forward to future Humans of the Wheatbelt projects. Wheatbelt Health Network Humans of the Wheatbelt

15.01.2022 Fresh Start, in conjunction with Go Medical and UWA Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences, is running a clinical trial to develop understanding around how naltrexone can be used as an effective treatment for methamphetamine addiction. Methamphetamine is one of the most commonly used drugs in Australia and is well known for its damaging impact on both the individuals who use it as well as on the wider community. This clinical trial aims to establish further evidence for best practice around treating methamphetamine addiction via a combination of pharmacotherapy and counselling support. If you or someone you know is interested in participating in this exciting new work, please contact our nurse manager, Karen Thomson by either calling the clinic or by email : [email protected]

14.01.2022 "Today was a Difficult Day," said Pooh. There was a pause. "Do you want to talk about it?" asked Piglet.... "No," said Pooh after a bit. "No, I don't think I do." "That's okay," said Piglet, and he came and sat beside his friend. "What are you doing?" asked Pooh. "Nothing, really," said Piglet. "Only, I know what Difficult Days are like. I quite often don't feel like talking about it on my Difficult Days either. "But goodness," continued Piglet, "Difficult Days are so much easier when you know you've got someone there for you. And I'll always be here for you, Pooh." And as Pooh sat there, working through in his head his Difficult Day, while the solid, reliable Piglet sat next to him quietly, swinging his little legs...he thought that his best friend had never been more right." A.A. Milne Sending thoughts to those having a Difficult Day today and hope you have your own Piglet to sit beside you

01.01.2022 Fresh Start is very grateful to have recently received 100 Bibles as a gift from our local Gideons representatives Elsie and David Chua, delivered by Chris Burwood. These Bibles have been distributed to Fresh Starts residential facilities in Perth at Subiaco, Alexander Heights and Warwick, and in Northam at both the Northam Recovery Centre and The Hill. The Bibles have been placed on the bedside table of each residents room. Gideons have kindly donated enough Bibles for us ...to ensure that every resident has access to a Bible while they stay with us, and when they leave they will be encouraged to take this Bible with them as a gift. Thank you Gideons for partnering with us at Fresh Start to deliver Gods message of love to all our clients. Please visit https://www.freshstart.org.au/news/ to view some of our previous articles. If you or a loved one are struggling with substance use or addiction, contact us on (08) 9381 1333 or please send an email to [email protected]
