25.01.2022 THE SOLUTION CONT. EDUCATION I passionately believe that if consumers understood how air conditioning actually functions quite different decisions would be made not only in the purchasing but even in the placement of both indoor and outdoor units. Last summer I was asked to look at a problem air conditioner with the customer convinced that the unit was not large enough. What I discovered was the complete opposite. The unit was not only double the size required for the ...space but was installed in such a way that the air temperature being sensed was bouncing off the opposite wall less than 3 metres away with the end result being that the air conditioner was totally ineffective. Unfortunately, the solution would be to replace it with a smaller unit which will be expensive as the refrigerant pipework would also need to be replaced and was installed into the wall cavity. An air conditioner has both a maximum and minimum capacity, both levels increasing with the size of the air conditioner. If the heat in the room does not reach that minimum capacity, the air conditioner will not cool effectively, if at all. It is hard for me to understand how this could have even happened because if the installer knew about air conditioning, it should have been raised with the owner at time of installation. The customer has now been left with an air conditioner that has cost more to buy than necessary and doesn’t cool effectively. See more

16.01.2022 THE SOLUTION. There are several parts to the solution however lets begin with: There needs to be a change in attitude back to being more cautious when purchasing an air conditioner whether it be a single room air conditioner or a fully ducted system for the entire home. Either way it is a serious investment financially but even more, it is an investment in the health of the occupants of the space. I wish I could take all the knowledge I’ve acquired over my time and condens...e into one simple sentence that is easy to understand but that is the problem its not easy. It’s not simple, take a 4 square metre window it could add as much as 2.2kW of radiant heat or as little as 400 watts depending just on which way its facing and then shading of that window also has to be considered. The size of the air conditioner required could alter by up to 2 sizes as a result of just one window. In previous posts I’ve covered the effects of oversizing or undersizing but will reiterate that it can affect both health and pocket. See more

09.01.2022 My friends ask me why at the age of 68years I am still involved with an industry that I’ve been involved with my entire life. The simple answer is that I feel I need to as over the years I’ve seen a change in attitude with this appliance. Before air conditioning became commonplace the average person was sceptical as even the name air conditioner suggests it affects the air that we breathe. Even the basic window air conditioner was sold through a dealership that was staffed ...with people who had trained in refrigeration and air conditioning and nearly every unit was sold with a maintenance plan to alleviate consumer’s concerns. Now almost every household in S.E. Qld has an Air-Con most being sold in the same aisle as toasters and irons in retail stores without much thought as to how it will do anything other than cool. The pity is that this appliance can be a whole lot more. An intelligently designed and maintained air conditioner can be a real asset to a healthier lifestyle (especially for people with respiratory illnesses). As I said earlier I have spent my whole life in this industry and have designed air conditioning systems for all manner of places including some that weren’t actually occupied by people such as mushroom farms and greyhound kennels, but to me the most important place to get it right is in the home and that is why I keep doing this. 07.01.2022 IMAGINE THIS! Following on from yesterday’s post IMAGINE THIS! I was a young woman and had finally been permitted to go on my first solo job. Wow, excited wasn’t the word for it, because I had done so well at college, I wasn’t even nervous. I knew it was going to be challenging because it was one of those restaurants that delivered steaks on sizzling platters and I needed to allow for that heat in my calculations but armed with my new knowledge I was supremely confident.... That is, until I met the owner of the restaurant. His very first words were I don’t like air conditioning, I don’t trust it, I would much rather open windows and let in fresh air but I have had some complaints from customers that it is too warm to eat comfortably Totally deflated are the words that spring to mind. Was this a success story I guess it was because we did air condition this restaurant and the air conditioners worked well for many years however, it is not the moral of this story. In the following years I encountered the same sort of mistrust in air conditioning often and I jokingly say that I wish I had a $ for every time I heard that phrase. That scepticism, however, did mean that consumers needed to be convinced that what they were buying was fit for purpose and certainly maintenance became a priority. Today, extraordinarily little thought is given over to suiting the appliance to individual needs. The use of the one calculation suits all approach, creates instead of air conditioning being an asset to health, the very opposite. Is there a viable solution? I believe there is and will discuss in more detail in future posts. See more
