08.01.2022 Several years ago we hiked across Yakushima, to visit Japan’s oldest tree, Jomon Sugi. On the first night we decided to strike camp at Wilson Sugi. On arrival we discovered Wilson was no longer a towering cedar but a 5 metre diameter, three metre high hollow stump. We entered under a natural lift in the roots to find a clear stream running through the middle of the hollow and a small shrine off to the side. Looking up through the hollow we could see the rest of the forest. The hike was an unforgettable experience, giving us a better understanding of Shintoism.
