24.01.2022 WHAT A CATCH! Check out the huge amount of fish and eels coming through our 'trap and haul' fish facility at Hinze Dam, following ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie. Fi...sh migrate to complete their life cycles but water-resource developments - like dams - can disrupt river connectivity and migrations, threatening biological diversity. To mitigate that impact, as part of the Stage 3 Upgrade at Hinze Dam, we installed a 'trap and haul' fish facility ' to assist countless fish and eels with their migrations. The facility was the first of its kind in Australia. For a behind-the-scenes look at how it all works, check out this video.

20.01.2022 Brewarrina Aboriginal Fish Traps Estimated to be the oldest man-made structures on Earth Brewarrina Aboriginal Fish Traps About 90 kms east of Bourke NSW there ...has been an Aboriginal presence in the town that is known today as Brewarrina for over 40,000 years, extraordinarily there remains evidence of this on the Barwon River in the form of ancient stone fish traps. the oldest man made structures that exists on Earth, these stone fish traps are reportedly evidence of engineering skill, knowledge of river hydrology & fish biology, ask 10 different people what they think is the oldest surviving manmade structure on earth and chances are you will get 10 different answers. The pyramids of Egypt or Central America? Not even close. Stonehenge? A relative newcomer. The Neolithic farmhouses of the Orkney Islands, or the megalithic tombs of France? At 7,000 years of age, the oldest of these barely registers alongside the granddaddy of them allthe Ngunnhu fish traps of Brewarrina. http://nationalunitygovernment.org//ancient-site-australia http://www.environment.gov.au/heritage//national/brewarrina https://www.environment.nsw.gov.au//viewattractiondetail.a See more

18.01.2022 Dragonfly larvae are no less remarkable, living in water with jet propulsion and mouths that extend to catch prey!

15.01.2022 The swamp crayfish (Tenuibranchiurus glypticus) is the equal smallest freshwater crayfish in the world at a maximum size of 25mm. In August 2015 it was listed under the Nature Conservation Act as 'endangered'. It has a restricted range that is disappearing as a result of coastal development.

08.01.2022 An interesting article about the potential for waterfowl to spread eggs of invasive fish. This experiment noted carp eggs (albeit 0.2%) surviving digestion by mallard ducks and actually hatching! https://www.pnas.org/content/117/27/15397
