22.01.2022 A REUNION TO BREATHE LIFE INTO A COMMUNITY PARRA’S PIECE By Peter (Parra) Montgomery... Friends of the Hay Magpies Club are investigating the possibility of holding a REUNION of its past players, officials and supporters. The original suggestion was to have it for the premiership teams of 1972 and 75, and then the suggestion came to add the 1982 premiership winning side to the event. The 1967 team has had regular re-unions over the years, the last one was held in Coffs Harbour in 2017, and previous to that In Canberra in 2008. A reunion of former players, across all eras, has been held in the Gold Coast for players who reside in that area, with a lunch attracting up to a dozen or so ex-players. The lunch date for 2020 was to be held this month (April 2020) but has been cancelled by the lock-down due to this serious coronavirus pandemic. Hopefully, it can be contained, as the country (and the World) can get back to normal without fear of it spreading. Sport will NEVER be the same, especially in little bush towns like Hay. We need to reignite the passion that existed before this deadly pandemic hit. A reunion of like minded fans and players would, not only be a good way for people to reconnect - but it could be beneficial for the long term future of the Club Without the past, there is no future In order to spread the task of organising such a huge event, it has been suggested that each era of the Club’s history, supply a Captain and members as part of a general committee to oversee all the arrangements - and make sure no-one is missed in getting an invitation. With plenty of time between now and the event, it will give those who intend to ‘return’ to start putting aside a few dollars each week to enable the funding of the trip. It has been suggested that Jade Hurley be approached to fit Hay into his touring schedule for the weekend, with a Show at the Services Club on Friday night. Jade is a much loved performer still, after wowing crowds at the Rugby League Balls held in the seventies. Even though Jade is well into his seventies, he still has a high energy performance - and still puts on a professional, second to none, act. I saw Jade in action in Albury in 2018, and believe me, it is still the same Jade who rocked The Memorial Hall some fifty years ago.He has fond memories of Hay and its people, and he has many friends in the district. What is needed now is for people to get behind this function. It would be terrific for Hay, the Magpies Club, hospitality venues, petrol stations, hotels, clubs, and again breathe life into our much loved community.

21.01.2022 Coach Woods Files Over the last 4 weeks training has ramped up that little bit more. We’ve had some heavy contact sessions and the fitness during training has g...one up another level. I recall in the one week of training I concentrated on both sessions being heavily based on core fitness and a lot of contact. Something I hadn’t done with the boys yet. I already knew from the Wednesday night we’d had a tough session. Then on Friday night we had a couple of blokes show up, one being Jack Morrison for his first session for the season and a couple of others that hadn’t been for many training sessions as well. So, I decided to test the squad and throw them into another session like the Wednesday night they’d just had. Mentally I was curious to see if they’d cope, once we put the ball in there hand again in the attack and defence drill. After being involved in the session as well and feeling some of the shots, I was pleased to say these boys that have been training and will run out on the field for the club and its supporters. Some of these blokes will give you goose bumps this year. The highlight was seeing Jack Morrison walk to the side while I chat to the squad, bring up his breakfast, lunch and dinner (4 times) every stoppage. Then get back into the drill before we would begin again. The character he showed for his first training session back, putting his body through punishing hell taking everything that ran at him including his best mate Shauny Aylett, was something to see. Jack is sure to become another crowd favourite this year... (Welcome back Jack) The last 2 weeks have seen us break into some longer distance running. Thanks to Ron for leading these sessions, previously the training was mostly short stuff with a lot core fitness. Building into this last couple of weeks it was time to stretch the hammies (Hamstrings) and open the lungs right up. (My hammies didn’t enjoy this) We’d then move into some skills and ball work straight afterwards, with the ball where we’ve mostly practiced and worked on the shape we’re going to play come our first game in the 3rd week of April. The boys are biting at the bit to play a game now that they have put some hard work in and enhanced their skill base. Talking about skill, that’s one thing I can see that has improved immensely since November. I even made the comment on Friday night last week that it’s improved, and I had one bloke that was standing on the fence reply pretty quickly that it sure has. (Again full credit must go to the boys) they keep showing up and putting in. I couldn’t praise all the boys enough that have been showing up and training. We have had some good laughs, jokes and plenty of banter between each other but in saying that while this happens the boys knuckle down once they are asked too.. I can see the boys are a close big group as it is but in the last couple of months that has grown tenfold, something I get excited with seeing because it will help these boys immensely on the footy field. When things get tough at training, they pick each other up and carry each other until the end. (A great attribute to have in a team). On Friday the 13th we are holding an open training night and am inviting all the old boys from the past and present to come over for a chat and watch your team train and have a feed and drink afterwards. Personally I would love to see as many past, present and future Magpies attend on the 13th.. Players to Watch (Willies back, back again) Willie Copeland a bloke I didn’t mention in the first write up but another I’ve had the pleasure with playing with over the time he has been here. This bloke has been a long stalwart (front rower) for the Magpies over the past 9 years or so. Only missing a couple of seasons in between and has been training the house down, hasn’t missed many sessions and just keeps pushing through the training. I can see this bloke having a big year with his no nonsense go forward, and just get up and play the football style. Knowing this bloke like a brother, I can see he is biting at the bit to pull on the black and white colours again. (Macca) Ben Mcrae Another talented junior that has been training and training well, had been away from football for a few years. But in saying that has lost none of his football attributes. Trains hard every session and always make sure he finishes everything asked of him at training. (He has been my training partner to push with) Mentally strong and loves to pull off the big shots. Another one that will push for a fair few first grade appearances throughout the year and definitely one to watch play at home..
