24.01.2022 The critically endangered Dainty Spider-orchid (Caladenia amoena) is sadly on its last legs in the wild, with less than 100 plants remaining scattered across th...e suburbs of Melbourne. Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria has been working as part of the Caladenia amoena Recovery Team funded by Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning, to get numbers up as quickly as possible. Dr Noushka Reiter has successfully germinated and grown a couple of hundred seedlings that will, in the future, form the basis of a seed orchard and reintroduction program for this species. Amazing work from the team! Image: Julia Franco #RBGVscience

18.01.2022 Did you know that there are more than 5,000 plants and 1,200 vertebrate animals native to Victoria? Today is Threatened Species Day, a day when we can all learn... about our native flora and fauna and commit to their protection, so we thought wed take the time to introduce you to just a few of these species. Were proud to work with conservationists, researchers and volunteers every day to protect our native plants, animals, and ecosystems. While how we work has changed over the last few months, our commitment to protecting our environment hasnt, and were working harder than ever. #ThreatenedSpeciesDay #TSDay2020 #CMAsGetItDone Threatened Species Commissioner Lily DAmbrosio MP DELWP PortPhillip

10.01.2022 Happy Wrensday! Did you know that Australia has nine species of fairy-wren? These little beauties are some of our boldest, brightest and most charismatic birds.... You’ll find them all across Australia, and they are instantly recognisable by their long tails and legs and short rounded wings. The plumage between both sexes differs greatly breeding male fairy-wrens have brilliantly coloured plumage, like this very appropriately named Splendid Fairy-wren! Splendid Fairy-wrens are communal creatures. They preen, forage and raise their chicks together in small flocks, run by a single female. These families only have one breeding male and up to six helpers, including offspring from previous seasons. They are found mostly in dense shrublands, heathy woodlands and mulga and mallee forest across inland and south-western Australia. Which fairy-wren species have you counted during the Aussie Backyard Bird Count? Let us know below! There’s still plenty of time to join in on the #AussieBackyardBirdCount fun! 10.01.2022 In 2008, the Australian Government banned the importation of Savannah cats to Australia. New scientific research shows that Australian wildlife dodged a bullet.... Savannah cats are a cross between a domestic cat and the much larger African serval, which is a skilled hunter. Theyre bred in some countries for the designer pet industry. In 2008, a commercial pet breeder applied to import Savannah cats to Australia. At the time, the Australian Government had limited information to assess the risk, but applied the precautionary principle. A new study now demonstrates the very real and significant risk that Savannah cats would have posed to Australian wildlife. If they had escaped or been released, they would free roamed across 97% of the country. Cats already prey on at least 151 species of native mammals in Australia. An additional 29 native mammal species would have come under threat from Savannah cats! This case study shows that Government regulation can be very effective. It will also be used in assessing the risks of future proposals to introduce hybrid designer pets. 09.01.2022 Beautiful morning in the reserve @banuylecitycouncil

09.01.2022 One of my favourite plants! Hopefully we will see it flowering in the Reserve soon.

09.01.2022 Hi All, unfortunately we have had to cancel this weekends working. If you get a chance please get out and enjoy our beautiful local environment....

08.01.2022 A great local activity to get involved in!

07.01.2022 Earlier this year I posted some photos of a Sugar-glider in our suburban backyard in Greensborough during daylight, which I considered an extremely rare opportu...nity. Well since then weve now had four daytime sightings! On this recent occasion, I witnessed this particular glider being chased around our yard for close to an hour, by approximately 20 Pied Currawongs. They seemed more interested in menacing it than doing any real harm, although some did manage to give it a few pecks. Here is the action about 6-7m off the ground, conveniently level with the top of our roof. See more

07.01.2022 Want to keep counting the birds in your backyard? We’ve loved hearing how so many of you have enjoyed taking part in the #AussieBirdCount. Maybe you’ve even lea...rnt how to identify a new species or two! If you're already missing counting birds, why not get involved in our Birds in Backyards program? Birds in Backyards is a research and education project led by our Urban Birds team and it’s all about the birds in YOUR backyard! Unlike the Aussie Backyard Bird Count which is only once a year, the Birds in Backyards program has quarterly seasonal counts. The spring count ends in just a few days, but the summer count kicks off in December and goes until the end of January. All you need to do is a 20 min survey (just like the Aussie Backyard Bird Count!) and tell us about your garden and the birds that visit it. By doing so, you’re helping the Birds in Backyards team understand more about what habitat attracts different bird species. These findings are then posted on the website which has a wealth of info on planting your own bird-friendly garden, bird baths, nest boxes and more! To get involved, check out: https://birdlife.org.au/all-about-birds/birds-in-backyards Follow the Birds in Backyards team on Instagram: @birdsinbackyards and Twitter: @UrbanBirdsOz or join the Birds in Backyards Facebook group. a Pale-headed Rosella munches on the seedpods of a Grevillea, by Shanna Bignell @feathertailpics Thanks for tagging us #birdlifeoz, Shanna!
