15.01.2022 Now that we can get out and volunteer again, Friends of Baluk Willam will be meeting next Saturday 28th November at the carpark at the corner of Orchid Rd and Courtney's Rd, Belgrave South, at 9am. We'll be starting the morning with an orchid and flower walk of around an hour to be lead by Kerryn Robinson from the Australasian Native Orchid Society. Kerryn is an artist who really knows her plants. After that we'll move up to Denham's Rd to do some weeding. We'll be scanning t...he bush for pittosporum seedlings that have come up with the rain. We'll also keep our eyes open for boneseed, asparagus and ivy. Pittosporum and boneseed are mostly small and are pulled by hand so garden gloves are good. Asparagus and ivy need to be dug up, so some sort of digger and sack will be useful. If you don't know these plants we'll find some examples to show you. This activity involves moving through the bush off-track. It can be scrubby and scratchy. Closed shoes, long sleeved shirt and long pants will be best. Don't forget your hat, water and sunscreen. Whew, no masks! If it's hot or you've had enough you can leave at any time, otherwise we'll wind up at midday. If you have a hi-vis vest they are great to help us keep in sight in the bush. There will be a few spares. Please sign up at Park Connect as this will be in line with the Parks Vic request for record keeping for covid safety.

08.01.2022 Beautiful day out at Baluk Willam today with Bushwalking Buddies, thank you Heather for organising. Lots of fungi still out, coral finger fungi and many others I don’t know the names. Whole colonies of Pterostylis, Green Noddinghoods, Nutans and Cobra orchids.

04.01.2022 Friends of Baluk Willam will be meeting this Saturday 27th June at Baluk Willam carpark, Courtney's Rd, Belgrave South at 9am. Our new Parks Vic ranger, James Tibbetts, will be there. James has real enthusiasm for Baluk Willam and its diverse plant communities. He'll lead an activity to teach us about Habitat Hectare Scoring (HHS).This is a quick fire/rapid monitoring method that scores the overall status of an Ecological Vegetation Class. We can all gain some insight as to ...how the reserve is tracking environmentally. This should flag areas we need to focus more attention on. It will be a great way to hone our observations of the health of the bush. There will be time to look at flowers and fungi as we go. Please sign on at Park Connect, the volunteer hub of Parks Victoria. This is the way Parks Vic keeps count of volunteer hours, makes sure we are insured, and records emergency contact details. If there is time, we'll do some weeding as well. We have some group tools, but if you have your own digger and gloves please bring them. We'll need to keep in mind social distancing guidelines. We'll wind up at midday.
