23.01.2022 These beautiful creatures live in our wetland. Between September and January, female long necked turtles leave the water to search for suitable sandy soil to lay their eggs. Please watch out for turtles and other wildlife crossing the road as you drive past the Big Swamp! https://youtu.be/H0pz4CTXMRo

22.01.2022 We wanted to make a bigger impact with Frog ID. Enter: the first #FrogIDWeek November 9-18

22.01.2022 What a great turn out at our last Busy Bee! Great day for a lap of the swamp collecting rubbish and weeds. Low water levels allowed us access to areas we can't get to at other times of the year.

21.01.2022 The FOBS volunteers were hard at it again on Sunday targeting weeds in our planting areas and other problematic nooks and cranny's. What a lovely morning to be at the wetland. Our end of year catch up will be 6th December and we're already planning for 2020 activities

20.01.2022 A long-necked turtle spotted at the Big Swamp Just one of many animal species that lives in our beautiful wetland

18.01.2022 We'll be taking a walk around the swamp this Saturday 9am as part of National Science Week events put on by Leschenault Catchment Council and South West Science Council and contributing data to the Great Aussie Bioquest. Enjoy a guided walk identifying birds, insects and plants with FoBS volunteers

17.01.2022 What a fantastic morning we had on Sunday! We tended to our perimeter plantings; picked up rubbish and had a look at some macroinvertebrates (and a few vertebrates too!) Next Busy Bee Sunday 25th November. #volunteer #Bigswamp #macroinvertebrates #ducklings #lovebunbury #community #BusyBee #conservation

17.01.2022 Our volunteers undertook macroinvertebrate sampling on Sunday as part of the national Waterbug Blitz. Sampling the type and number of water bugs is a great way to analyse the health of a wetland. The team collected samples, identified the bugs, and entered data into the Waterbug app. Thanks to everyone who helped! If you would like to be involved in events like these, email [email protected]

16.01.2022 Last months seedlings on the Big Swamp perimeter have had some wetting agent and mulch applied and tree guards installed thanks to the Busy Bee team on Sunday. This should help prevent them drying out over summer. Not pictured are the other volunteers who were tackling Bridle Creeper near the bird hide - great job all! Thank you City of Bunbury for providing us with mulch and tree guards #volunteers #lovebunbury #bigswamp #conservation

16.01.2022 What a wonderful opportunity we had to be shown how to undertake a Waterbug survey of the Big Swamp. We had Cecil from the #NationalWaterbugBlitz team take us through sampling techniques in a river or wetland and then the use of the #Waterbug App to identify the critters and give an indication of wetland health. The swamp is healthy! #volunteers from Friends of Big Swamp and Brunswick River Restoration Action Group (BRRAG) will now be able to undertake regular surveys of their water bodies. Thanks to the waterbug team and Inspiring Australia, and to the Leschenault Catchment Council for facilitating the event. #lovebunbury City of Bunbury

16.01.2022 Some of the FOBS team enjoying the great celebration that is the WA Wetlands Conference for World Wetlands Day at The Wetlands Centre Cockburn. Thanks to City of Cockburn.

12.01.2022 Wetland plants and photosynthetic algae can help to fight climate change through storing carbon. Look up ‘blue carbon’ online. Protecting wetlands into our future has never been so important. Happy World Wetlands Day!

11.01.2022 Join us for our planting day this Sunday 23rd at 8am! Meet us at the FoBS shed :)

08.01.2022 Wetlands provide valuable habitat for a huge number of animals, adding beauty and life to our city. Happy World Wetlands Day!

08.01.2022 An urban wetland is a huge contributor to the health and mental health of the city. Happy World Wetlands Day!

06.01.2022 Happy World Wetlands Day everyone! Chris Howe from Friends of Big Swamp captured the beauty of this valuable wetland in our backyard.

03.01.2022 What a privilege to see Jenny Davis and Jane Chambers, the Wetland Gurus at the WA Wetlands conference yesterday. Happy World Wetlands Day!

02.01.2022 It was a misty moisty morning, and cloudy was the weather; amazing how many plants we can plant when we all work together! Thanks to the millennium kids for your help, and thanks to City of Bunbury for providing the plants. Well done team!

02.01.2022 Turtle awareness... slow down near wetlands (for waterbirds too) and think about some of the threats they face. In Western Australia call Turtle Oblonga or Wildcare Helpine for assistance with sick, injured or displaced turtles.

02.01.2022 The plants around the outside of a wetland, also called fringing vegetation or wetland buffer are hugely important. They provide breeding grounds, habitat and safe refuge for wildlife; they keep mozzies contained; they help to shade the wetland and reduce evaporation and it also makes for a beautiful place to walk. Happy World Wetland Day!

01.01.2022 Thanks to the hardworking Friends who planted Baumea articulata at the Big Swamp at our latest Busy Bee. The Baumea is a native rush which has so many benefits to our wetland. Here's a few: used by frogs to cling to and attach eggs to; waterbirds to use as a hidey hole and for nesting material; dragonfly's to perch on; to help hold the mud together; produce oxygen; extract nutrients from the water and sediment as they grow...the list is endless!
