01.01.2022 'The' McCormack St Ficus: Is in need of some assistance after attempting to ward off a nasty fungal pathogen named Phellinus noxius commonly known as brown ro...ot rot. Amongst a variety of issues , it attacks tree roots causing decay, which cuts off water and nutrient supply to the crown resulting in tree death. The disease is difficult to control and can remain viable in the soil organics for many years as it spreads through root contact between trees. Its presence can generally be recognised by a ‘stocking’ that forms on the roots and tree trunks. In an attempt to bolster the Fig Trees defence mechanisms against Phellinus noxius the boys are broadcasting a biological control measure in the form of another fungal species named Trichoderma which may stem further spread of the unwanted soil born pathogen by ways of competition for nutrient ,crowd collinisation and many many other means. The Trichoderma collonises well on steamed rice and it is then applied to the affected areas on the trunk and also introduced to the soil profile that houses the trees root system. After the treatment the Gardens Crew undertake a thorough sterilisation of their PPE to ensure the pathogen doesnt get a free tour to a new site! Fingers crossed as we watch and wait!
