19.01.2022 Are you interested in Citizen Science? ATHENA: Spot Species in Fine Art A lot remains unknown about how the natural world has been impacted by humans. Exploring historical paintings can reveal biological and cultural aspects of the historical relationship between man and nature. For this, we invite you to help spot plants and animals in fine art. A selection of paintings and printed art from the tremendous collection of the Dutch Rijksmuseum is ready to be classified.... By classifying these works of art, you help us build the ATHENA portal which documents the history of biodiversity in the Netherlands. ATHENA is a project funded by a core team of researchers with backgrounds in Biology and History, supported by a broad consortium of knowledge-, heritage- and open institutions. The project aims to develop an internationally unique database allowing researchers from multiple scientific disciplines to study human-nature relationships. The resulting database will provide a platform for large-scale, comparative (both in space and time) and multilevel studies of human-nature relationships. In this portal, paintings will be included to show the history of the iconography of animals and fauna in the Netherlands. However, for many paintings, it is unknown which species are depicted. For this, we ask for your help! Learn more, and get involved at http://species-in-art.com

17.01.2022 Information Memorandum, The Gong & Gardens Ballarat City Council is planning a major engineering project to repair the leaking wall of The Gong reservoir in the Buninyong Botanic Gardens. Council is also planning to attend to instability associated with the concrete walls surrounding the walled garden, previously the township’s swimming baths. Both projects are estimated to cost... $1.5+ million. Given the confluence of these two major projects and the need for a visionary strategy to take the 159 years old Gardens into the future, Friends of Buninyong Botanic Gardens believes it is timely, indeed urgent, to be establishing a Master Plan for the Gardens. 14.01.2022 It's a glorious time for the Gardens & people use it so imaginatively. The recent snowfalls created another world there.

13.01.2022 Council has been preparing engineering and landscape plans for the remediation of The Gong reservoir wall in the Buninyong Botanic Gardens. You may be aware that this wall has the Cornish Street roadway above it and has been leaking from The Gong into the lower Gardens for many years. There are two meetings Council is convening to present their proposed plans and gather community feedback about the project. Date: Thursday 28 November 2019... Time: 1:30pm 3:00pm or 5:30pm 7:00pm Venue: Buninyong Bowling Club 708 Inglis Street, Buninyong

13.01.2022 Open to 19th July

09.01.2022 Today I found Phil Berry repainting the signs on the Queen Victoria rotunda - though a little shocked that the old signs had been painted over, apparently they've been painted at least twice before. And Phil is obviously a great sign-writer. The new cream colour of the lattice is a great improvement. I really hated the stark white.

08.01.2022 Council plans to permanently remove all trees both sides of the road embankment between Buninyong Botanic Gardens and the lake. You only have until the end of Jan to comment - go to City of Ballarat MySay. On the lake side an embankment of bare rocks is planned - causing irreparable damage to the environment. A local civil engineer with experience in OS world heritage sites has offered a simple, inexpensive alternative that would slightly lower the level of the lake and pipe ...the water under the road to the small ponds on the Gardens side. (They might need tweaks, & an upgrade of the outlet to the storm water, but the road would not even have to be closed). Currently the willows on the lake side provide protection to the many birds that live on our lovely little lake. The whole area is state heritage listed for heritage, social & environmental significance. See more

Using scientific deduction and extrapolating where you can ( online research) which cutting is it and what colour is it? First correct answer will receive a $20 Gift Voucher for our Nursery. ( up to 4 plants depending on size)

03.01.2022 One of the most perfect flowers I have seen recently in my own garden is a result of the continuing supply of moisture over recent months. This Magnolia grandiflora tree has continuously flowered since November 2019, a record, and a recent bloom is so beautiful. Wishing all a safe social distancing time. The Buninyong Gardens open space is a perfect place to relax and recharge.
