23.01.2022 Don’t miss this

23.01.2022 Heard this Bunya pine cone falling through the canopy then thud on the ground a few metres in front of us at Adelaide Botanic Gardens. Big, spiky, solid & surpr...isingly much heavier than I had imagined! Near death experience? Hearing it fall out of the tree was the highlight of the day, and very much a life (rather than a near death) experience! Fun fact: The tallest Bunya pine known is a planted tree in Portugal, which I laser-measured at 50 metres tall in 2010. So this 10 kg spiky mass is going 112 km/h when it hits the ground from the top of that tree!

22.01.2022 A very special heritage building photographed by FBGA member Chris Kirby. So beautiful

22.01.2022 Do you run a mobile café or coffee van in SA? The Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium recognises that these past months have been a trying time for South Aus...tralians, and small local businesses, in particular, have been greatly impacted. We endeavour to support and provide as many opportunities for local businesses and organisations as we can. As such, we have just opened Expressions of Interest for the provision of a mobile café or pop-up coffee van at Mount Lofty Botanic Garden for weekends and Public Holidays! Initially, this will be for the period 19 September to 29 November 2020, but with a potential option to extend upon review. Applications are now open and close 4pm Friday 28 August 2020. More information and to apply: http://bit.ly/EofA_mobilecafe

18.01.2022 A great business which provides discounts to members of the Friends. Support them if you can.

18.01.2022 In line with the state government's announcement that South Australia will enter into lockdown to help contain Adelaide's COVID-19 outbreak, Adelaide, Mount Lof...ty and Wittunga Botanic Gardens will all be closed until Wednesday 25 November, 2020. While the gardens are closed, the plants will keep growing, flowers will still bloom and be enjoyed by bees, butterflies and birds ... and all the beauty will be here waiting for you when the gates can open again. Until then, keep safe and we look forward to seeing you again soon. Photo: Aaron Harrison

17.01.2022 So true. Thanks Sophie

16.01.2022 Princeton researchers have discovered something we have known forever!

15.01.2022 Beautiful morning spent touring the new developments at Wittunga Botanic Garden. $750,000 of funding has so far provided a new bird garden area, native plants ...(95% from rural sources such as Deep Creek and Kangaroo Island, including endangered species), and a new lake walk trail and beach. Still to come a Nature Play SA play playground designed in collaboration with Blackwood Primary School, new park entrances and a lake viewing deck platform. I was glad to hear the Minister David Speirs MP announce new opening hours for the park, changing from the current 4pm closure to 7pm in the warmer months and 6pm in the winter months. Wonderful to spend the morning with Friends of the Botanic Gardens of Adelaide, Nicolle Flint Member for Boothby, Isobel Redmond, Nan Davies and the Blackwood Action Group. I am looking forward to this draw card bringing new families to our great area.

15.01.2022 A good reason to support this event

14.01.2022 Following Federal and State Government advice, it is with a heavy heart we announce that Mount Lofty Botanic Garden will be temporarily closed to the public fro...m 4pm today until further notice. The decision was made in an effort to protect visitors and staff during what is usually a peak time (Autumn) for Mount Lofty Botanic Garden, as the COVID-19 situation continues to evolve. You can still visit and explore the tranquil spaces at Adelaide Botanic Garden and Wittunga Botanic Garden but we remind you to comply with our garden regulations and all Government mandated social distancing and hygiene requirements. Alternatively you can visit www.parks.sa.gov.au or www.southaustraliantrails.com.au for additional outdoor spaces that are still open near you. We will continue to channel energy into our digital presence and hope that you will celebrate Autumn Colours with us through our social media platforms. There will be opportunities to share photos of Mount Lofty Botanic Garden from previous years or the autumn colours in your own garden. Stay connected with our website and continue following our social media pages for updates. Thank you for your understanding during this unprecedented time. 10.01.2022 Volunteers are one of our greatest assets at the Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium of South Australia. On behalf of Director Dr Lucy Sutherland, the Board an...d the BGSH staff, thank you to the Friends of the Botanic Gardens of Adelaide and all of our volunteers for your outstanding contribution to our organisation. The International Rose Garden had 27 volunteers (pictured) reaching almost 1000 hours of volunteering in the current financial year. Their efforts were equivalent to 124 eight hour days! Volunteers supporting the education programme helped it to reach over 27,000 registrations in 2019. The Wittunga Botanic Garden blitz in November 2019 saw volunteers plant 200 plants and spread a significant amount of mulch. The new Hands on Hort volunteer programme at Adelaide Botanic Garden allowed for extensive maintenance of the classground. We hope that this week during #NationalVolunteerWeek, you can reflect on your amazing efforts in changing communities and changing lives. Thank you.

09.01.2022 There are quite a few sculptures this year which would look wonderful in a garden setting. Just thought that Friends might like to take a look

05.01.2022 We would like to say a big thank you to the SA branch of the Australian Garden History Society for gifting us this wonderful replica Wardian Case. These nift...y cabinets were used many moons ago to safely house exotic plant collections on long voyages both overseas and within Australia. Their secret is that they maintain a small ecosystem; the sealed box means that no water is lost, allowing plants to survive for many months where fresh water is sparse. These cases also once lined the Main Walk of Adelaide Botanic Garden, providing a snug home for cacti collections. They were sadly removed in 1882 due to vandalism and theft of the fascinating contents within. You will be able to see this little piece of history up close when we display it in the garden and at our workshops in the future. Thanks again for this unique gift, Australian Garden History Society! See more

02.01.2022 Following the 2019-20 bushfire season, the Botanic Gardens and State Herbarium received many enquiries about how burnt and damaged vegetation will recover. In a...n effort to help you understand what you see going on across the landscape now, the State Herbarium has launched series of blogs about the effect of fire on Australian plants. 01.01.2022 A huge shout out of thanks to everyone who has donated to our Annual Appeal to save endangered Kangaroo Island plants. Together, you have raised $20,000 to se...nd our seed scientists on a quest to prevent plant extinction. Big thanks also go to the Friends of the Botanic Gardens of Adelaide for their generous $5,000 donation. Their President, Merilyn Kuchel, says she hopes this contribution will encourage others to make a tax deductible donation to the Appeal before it ends on June 30. There are six days to go! Please, donate to support biodiversity. Every contribution, no matter the size, helps planet Earth https://bit.ly/SeedBankAppeal
