25.01.2022 Keep up to date with all our latest news in the newest edition of Treetops - out now!

25.01.2022 This is the story of Fey. Fey came in with her mother Tina in February after she was seen falling from her Mum's back. Both were brought into care and after being given a clean bill of health were released. Because they were residents of the colony surrounding our care centre, we saw the pair quite frequently. It was wonderful to watch Fey grow and Tina thriving as a Mum. Unfortunately, Tina was killed by roaming dogs a few months ago. We were devastated and very concerned fo...r Fey's wellbeing as she was nowhere to be found. Imagine our delight to find her last week, nearly a kilometre away. She had another fall and landed on concrete but after a few days of TLC, she was ready to go. She spent some time with Webster and Templeton but their bromance was to strong to infiltrate (more on that tomorrow). She's now back where she belongs and we hope she stops falling out of trees in the future. Twice is plenty! Good luck darling. #friendsofthekoala #koala #koalas #joeys #koalarescue #koalacare #koalarelease #koalaconservation #lismore #byronbay #tweed #ballina #richmondvalley #kyogle #tinafey #tina #fey #treefall #staysafe #goodluck #savethekoala See more

24.01.2022 The bromance in the kindy continues to blossom. While they do almost everything together now, it seems the relationship isn't as equal as we first thought. Templeton does cuddle up with Webster but he is not the instigator of the spooning. As we mentioned yesterday, Fey spent a few days in kindy and Webster was particularly possessive of Templeton's attention. It seems that sometimes Templeton is looking for some solitude but Webster always finds him. They are a joy to watch grow up together. We are all in love #friendsofthekoala #koala #koalas #joeys #koalarescue #koalacare #koalarelease #koalaconservation #lismore #byronbay #tweed #ballina #richmondvalley #kyogle #templeton #webster #koalakindy #spooning #jealous #bromance #weeklyupdate #savethekoala

24.01.2022 It's exhausting being in such an intense bromance. Just ask these two. Webster and Templeton have become firm friends now and do lots of things together. Sleeping, eating, talking politics, Eskimo kisses, more eating... In this time of discord and unrest across the globe, stop for a moment and enjoy this little treasure. These boys bring so, so much happiness to our lives. We hope they bring a spark of joy to yours. #friendsofthekoala #koala #koalas #joeys #koalarescue #koalacare #koalarelease #koalaconservation #lismore #byronbay #tweed #ballina #richmondvalley #kyogle #webster #templeton #bromance #love #trust #eskimokisses #weeklyupdate #savethekoala

23.01.2022 Two of FOK's coordinators at their other work making a difference for koalas. We look forward to reading what you learnt Fiona Wood and Linda Swankie.

23.01.2022 Friends of the Koala's AGM is on 19th November at 7pm (AEST) and is a hybrid event being held on Zoom and in person at Lismore Worker's Club. Our members have been notified. If interested in knowing more then please contact [email protected]. If you want to attend please register at https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/friends-of-the-koala-2020-a. Our guest speaker is Amy Hocking, a student at the University of New England studying a Masters of Environmental Science... (Research). Amy will be presenting her preliminary findings on interactions between wild dogs and koalas. Amy speculates that rehabilitated koalas may behave differently from established populations and very little information is available on the fate of those koalas, unless brought back into care. This project seeks to monitor the predation risk of the rehabilitated koalas and compare the results with a healthy free ranging, established koala population within the same study site. This study area is unique as it the first to look at fine scale movements of wild free ranging and rehabilitated koala over several months and is one of the few populations that have not been affected by the recent devastating bushfires. Information from this study will assist in building knowledge regarding the potential impact of wild dogs on koalas, assisting to mitigate threats to koalas & stabilise local populations. See more

22.01.2022 Kindy Kids in action? You got it! Howie starts us off showing us the best way to enjoy Swamp Mahogany which has a really thick leaf you can get stuck into. He eats it a lot to help him chonk up. Do you think he's chonking up? I think he's super handsome and chonking nicely. Summer is the sweetest girl in the world. She has had so many health issues and she looks so fragile, but she is eating and playing well and we love her Wilbur is so ready for the wild but he has to wai...t for Lupita to be healthy. Not long now mate. Carlisle definitely fancies himself a handsome dude. Lots of grooming required to look this good! Lupita is finally looking so much more like herself. Her mischievous eyes are back and she's feeling much better. Dr Jackie is still working on her tummy but just seeing her eyes so bright males us smile. Swifty was a bit shy this week. It won't be long before she goes to plantation. Such a grown up girl. Kola has been having long talks with Lauren about perfecting her scowl (aka. resting bitch face). Kola is an excellent student. We love her all the more for her stubbornness and refusal to partake in kindy fun. She gave @bradmustow a great little action shot jumping running, climbing, pushing everyone out of the way so she could get back to some serious scowling. So funny. Howie has the last word by refusing to move for Kola which she did a few weeks ago. Go for it buddy! #friendsofthekoala #koala #koalas #joeys #koalakindy #koalahospital #koalarescue #koalarehabilitation #koalaconservation #koalarelease #lismore #byron #tweed #richmondvalley #kyogle #ballina #howie #summer #wilbur #carlisle #lupita #swifty #kola #weeklyupdate #savethekoala See more

20.01.2022 It's not too late to buy tickets to 'Dancing in the Shadows of Motown' showing at Byron Theatre tonight! $1 from every ticket sold will be donated to Friends of the Koala

13.01.2022 Good afternoon friends! We have a little treat with a video of Webster loving Lupita. While your heart is exploding, please remember that the next week or so is going to see some seriously hot weather and our wildlife needs all the help it can get. Please put out bowls of water around your property and if possible, put a rock in the bowl so small animals don’t get stuck or drown. Thank you #friendsofthekoala #koala #koalas #joeys #wildlife #conservation #webster #lupita #waterforwildlife

11.01.2022 With Charlotte's life returned to normal, she can get back to the important stuff. Thinking about things really intensely, eating, thinking, hanging upside down, thinking, grooming, thinking, relaxing. She has a very full life. You can adopt Charlotte and find out more about her through our website https://www.friendsofthekoala.org/adopt-a-koala/ #friendsofthekoala #koala #koalas #permanentcare #koalarescue #koalacare #koalarelease #koalaconservation #lismore #byronbay #tweed #ballina #richmondvalley #kyogle #charlotte #savethekoala

09.01.2022 With Sparky and Shira released this past week, Lauren is very pleased to be head girl again (in her head at least). Jesse has been a bit lackluster in his attentions though so she's still got her angry face on. Jesse, Triumph and Bobby all have leaf selection down to an art. No need for this one leaf at a time business, eat the whole bunch at once! Sleepy Dale doesn't seem to be approving of this technique. So judgy. Regi and Waru are the kings of zzz's but McTrashin has one ...eye open and sees all. Hymie just wants you to get a good look at his best side and new boy Lui has no idea what's going on. Don't worry mate, you'll get the hang of this mad house Webster and Templeton will be featured tomorrow and Charlotte will star on her own the following day. #friendsofthekoala #koala #koalas #koalarescue #koalacare #koalarelease #koalaconservation #lismore #byronbay #tweed #ballina #richmondvalley #kyogle #weeklyupdate #lauren #jesse #bobby #triumph #sleepydale #regi #waru #mctrashin #hymie #lui #photography #savethekoala

08.01.2022 Bonus update on Butters, Dimples and Meggs. Thanks to the property owner Michael, we are able to let you know what these three monkeys have been up to. Usually, joeys take off after being soft released but for whatever reason, these guys just weren't quite ready. Butters has explored and returned a few times but always seems to be stalking Dimples no matter where he is. She has told him in no uncertain terms that he needs to keep his distance but he's usually nearby. He a...lso managed to tear out his ear tag within days of release. What a little turkey! Dimples is excellent at being a koala. Her instinct is really strong and she's doing everything right and looks amazing. Unfortunately, the same can't be said for Meggs. Last week we heard Meggs was behaving strangely and breathing rapidly. Even though from a distance, Meggs also looked incredibly well (see photo) their behaviour is something we always take seriously as they are masters of hiding injury and illness. Thankfully we were able to rescue her and return her to the hospital where she was found to have several health issues. This is something that can happen when joeys are released but we hope she will make a full recovery and return to her kindy pals again soon. #friendsofthekoala #koala #koalas #joeys #koalarescue #koalacare #koalarelease #koalaconservation #koalakindy #lismore #byronbay #tweed #ballina #richmondvalley #kyogle #butters #dimples #meggs #wildkoalas #savethekoala See more

08.01.2022 Good morning! We have had a few stinking hot days in the past week and even though we have a sprinkler system to mist the air and cool down, it's hard in a fur coat to get comfy. Lauren and Charlotte know what they're doing. Arms up, legs out. Charlotte is insistent, she will not shave her armpits Triumph is wishing that leaf was closer so he didn't have to move and Bobby has found the floppy sleeping pose to be extremely pleasant. Little man Jesse has gone on a 2 week v...acation to one of our plantation kindys. We are hoping a change of scenery will invigorate him and improve his quality of life. See you soon mate. Send us a postcard! Quad and McTrashin have been released! Yay! Good luck out there boys. Freckles was a little misadventure girl who was young and healthy with a teeny tiny pinky (joey) in her pouch. We relocated her down the road a bit away from backyards and dogs. Good luck darling. Waru is chugging along. His eyes appear to be extra sensitive to light because we see him looking around at night on our security cameras. Our clinical staff are working hard to help him make a full recovery. And finally Regi. Even though he looks like a hot mess, he is doing amazingly well (touch wood) and we are hopeful he will continue to improve. 04.01.2022 This #WildKoalaDay we are celebrating a very special partnership with @ifaw. We know koalas are beloved around the world but their population especially in NSW is in trouble. This is why every koala we can rescue, rehabilitate and release back into the wild is essential for the conservation of the species. Thanks to IFAW’s ongoing support over the years and sponsorship of our incredible vet team, we can give koalas that critical treatment they need to have the best chance of being released back into the wild where they belong. Our partnership with IFAW has spanned years and just like koalas, is special. Watch this video to find out more! #friendsofthekoala #ifawaustralia #ifawglobal #koalas

02.01.2022 We've had some serious rain this week but Charlotte found a lovely sunny spot to get into her daily beauty/grooming schedule. There's a lot of fur so she's always hard at work. She gets a bit hungry and is a wee bit fussy but she even gave the Melaleuca Quinquenervia flowers a nibble. Lauren has been fully pampered (by herself of course) and is ready to hit up the local nightclubs. Sorry Lauren, you aren't 18 years old yet. Kola eats so much - eating, practicing angry fac...e and chonking are definitely her thing and she does with beauty and grace, well mostly. Unfortunately, Miss Trouper still very sick but the clinical team haven't given up and continue to work hard so long as she is comfortable and content. Heracles is such a handsome boy and even though he is eating well, he is quite sick. Come on big guy, you can do it. Kendrick's eyes are slowly making progress. Dr Jackie is pretty confident the fungal infection is gone and we now need to a bit of hair to regrow and he'll be on his way home. And finally our star... Triumph. I think he is fully aware of how gorgeous he is, and let's be honest, he is. So great to seeing him using that boot with more confidence every day #friendsofthekoala #koala #koalas #koalahospital #koalarescue #koalarehabilitation #koalaconservation #koalarelease #lismore #byron #tweed #richmondvalley #kyogle #ballina #weeklyupdate #savethekoala See more

02.01.2022 Good morning! We are starting this week with a beautiful new face, Quad. Now, this young male was quite the tricky one to catch. He was run over by a car and caravan but luckily the driver be behind stopped to help. It took 2 days and two teams of four rescuers to capture him. His injuries are thankfully not substantial but he has some other health problems we are dealing with. Welcome aboard Quad! Hymie and Sleepy Dale have been successfully released! Good luck boys! Bobby ...and Triumph are spending a fair bit of time bellowing at each other. It's music to our ears Waru has a very healthy appetite, as does Regi. Both boys are doing well. Lauren has engaged Charlotte in a staring competition - we honestly don't know who will win! Poor Lui still doesn't know what is going on. #friendsofthekoala #koala #koalas #koalarescue #koalacare #koalarelease #koalaconservation #lismore #byronbay #tweed #ballina #richmondvalley #kyogle #quad #hymie #sleepydale #bobby #triumph #waru #regi #lauren #charlotte #lui #weeklyupdate #savethekoala See more

02.01.2022 Getting an early start Australia time to give our overseas followers a special treat. May I present... the kindy kids... Two new girls joined the kindy last weekend. Ivy and Bloom, who have been in home care for many months, have come for some kindy time. Even though their weights and ages are very similar, these two really are ying & yang and not just because of their stunning colouring. They are chalk and cheese with their personalities too - Bloom is borderline feral and I...vy is clingy. In fact Bloom is so grown up, she moved out of kindy a few days ago into the big run with Charlotte and Lauren. We have Meggs back in care now and we are crossing everything that she picks up. She is now sharing a run with Fey who, only a few weeks after her release needed to be rescued again a few days ago. Lupita is not sure how to handle all this competition for the boys attention, but Wilbur says relax, Templeton tries his hand at hypnotism and Webster is very happy with his choice of friends. Lupita chills out just fine. #friendsofthekoala #koala #koalas #joeys #koalarescue #koalacare #koalarelease #koalaconservation #lismore #byronbay #tweed #ballina #richmondvalley #kyogle #somuchfloof #ivy #bloom #meggs #lupita #templeton #webster #yingyang #weeklyupdate #savethekoala See more

01.01.2022 Triumph wants you! We are looking to employ a second vet to work 3-4 days in our Koala Hospital. This could be your opportunity to work with koalas in a veterinary conservation role, supporting an iconic species to avoid extinction while living and working in a desirable lifestyle location in the NSW Northern Rivers.
