23.01.2022 The NSW Parliament has recently introduced electronic petitions; signing takes less than a minute and I just signed this petition seeking action on feral horses in Kosciuszko A new NSW Parliament e-petition has been launched seeking action on out-of-control feral horse numbers in Kosciuszko National Park. Since the last horse petition was presented to the NSW Parliament in August 2019, the park remains without a horse management plan and the horse population in Kosciuszko N...ational Park has continued to grow. Rare alpine orchids, daisies and flowers like the Anemone buttercup (Anemoneus ranunculus) remain under threat from grazing and trampling by horses. https://www.parliament.nsw.gov.au//Pages/ePetition-details

22.01.2022 A reminder that members of the local Sutherland group of the Australian Plants Society, who are also Friends of Royal, are running a gentle plant appreciation/ID walk on September 21st, details and registration on our website, link below. In the meantime, have a look at several plants in flower now in the park. The walk will start from the Regional Office car park at the start of the Bungoona track. Details will be forwarded to all those that register. ... FREE EVENT. https://www.friendsofroyal.org.au/the-royal/guided-walks/

21.01.2022 Following our pampas grass weeding today, came across these two deer, bold as brass on the side of the road in the middle of the day. Only had my camera with me to shoot these towo.

19.01.2022 Some wonderful pictures of falcons and Eagles in the Royal just posted by Dave, who is leading our bird walks tomorrow. Both walks are now sold out, but sign-up now for the next guided walks in December. These are FREE events. Link to the story and more pictures here:... https://www.friendsofroyal.org.au/ and to the registration page for the December walks here. (Now full) The response to this invitation has been huge, with both December tours now full and in fact overbooked. We are in discussions about maybe doing another. In the meantime, this morning event turned up around 40 species in just 2 hours, including a few nesting pairs and some cute babies.

18.01.2022 Vandalisation in the park. What do you think about this ? 9 volunteers from Friends, including 2 new people, Kerrie and Adam, thanks guys, finished off the removal of Prickly pear from a site in the park yesterday, using 2 boats for access and removal of the weeds collected, which also included Mother of Millions, Senna and Scotch Thistle.... The site is a headland near Costens Point and is obviously used by people with absolutely no sense of decorum or even appreciation for the natural beauty or history of the place, as you can see from these photos. I usually try to put 'nice' photos here to show the natural beauty of the park, so apologies for these. The headland contains the remains of a midden, as do many places along the shores of Part Hacking and a wide variety of native plants. We came across a couple of snakes, several seldom seen birds and some unusual native plants, so still a place worth visiting. So the dozens of bottles and can we collected indicate one or more drunken parties here and several trees bearing scars from people either chopping for firewood or just logs to sit on ! The headstone marks the grave of a woman who used to live here, so I am told. Her trusty dog lived a few years longer after her death and was reputedly buried with her when it died. Since our last visit, someone has decided to make her grave into a fire-pit. That is all.

18.01.2022 Over these next few months consider putting out a flat bowl of water for the native birds. If the bowl is a touch deep then add a rock for the bird to perch on. Your efforts will be rewarded by the joyful carrolling and splashing of feathered visitors.

15.01.2022 9 enthuiastic volunteers from Friends of Royal and Toyal Bushies spent the morning at Middle Rill, behind Garie beach. We walked up the pretty little creek, past a satin bower bird's bower and up into the valley. Here we found several patches of pampas grass along and in the creek line and also up in the bush. There were other weeds there including cotton bush and scotch thistle. Still plenty more to dig out, so feel free to volunteer on our next day out. We should perhaps concentrate on the cotton bush before it seeds for next time.

14.01.2022 Have you spotted these on your walks yet and done your bit for citizen science ? The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment and the Water Research Laboratory (UNSW Sydney) have teamed up to develop CoastSnap - an innovative citizen science beach monitoring program that enables park visitors to help monitor change on NSW beaches. A fixed phone cradle aimed at beach landscape allows anyone to take a snap of exactly the same view. ... These images are uploaded and used to measure change such as sand distribution, erosion and impacts of sea level change and extreme weather events. Royal has been selected to host two CoastSnap stations, at Garie North Head (overlooking Garie Beach) and in the Southern side of Thelma Head (overlooking North Era). Both sites have reasonable phone coverage. You can learn more at this link: https://www.environment.nsw.gov.au//citizen-science/get-in https://www.google.com/url

10.01.2022 Came across this roadkilll on the side of the road today, a young, harmless diamond python. So sad.

09.01.2022 Another follow-up story in the SMH this weekend on deer. This one reporting on the on-going culling program. Hardly making a dent in the population though. https://www.smh.com.au//yep-that-s-a-deer-cull-to-reduce-t

07.01.2022 Over 1,000 face masks collected on Lord Howe Island ! One of our many unsung volunteer heros, who collects litter, often floating plastics, from locations in the Royal such as at Marley, sent me this story from Australian Geographic, which I missed. If you'd like to help by joining in our next Litter day, we have an event planned for early Saturday morning 14th November.... Here is a link to register: https://www.friendsofroyal.org.au/volunt/litter-collection/ https://www.australiangeographic.com.au//face-masks-float/

06.01.2022 Volunteer men and women (known as the Royal Bushies) are out in the RNP every Thursday making the park environment a better place for visitors and the natural flora and fauna. Site visits vary- Wattamolla, Little Marley, Reid's Flat, Jibbon Headland, The Old Post Office above Allambie Flat.... all beautiful, scenic and interesting places. Their Mission: remove weeds and invaders and tidy up overgrown tracks. Their targets: Formosa Lily, asparagus fern, watsonia lily, calla lilies, mother of millions, privet ......... It's a great job if you would like to spend a few hours with friendly knowledgeable people who are are passionate about the natural biodiversity of the environment. If you are interested in joining as a volunteer, visit this link: https://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au//volunt/royal-bushies

05.01.2022 Last chance to join an activity in the park this weekend with a short, sharp litter pickup morning at beautiful Wattamolla. We are running this on a Saturday to give those that work during the week a chance to participate. Starting at 8.00am on Saturday morning, we will work for just a couple of hours before the precinct gets busy.... Equipment provided, bring your own gloves if you have them and wear sturdy shoes or boots and long trousers. Bring your own snacks and drinks for a chat with other volunteers afterwards.

03.01.2022 Had a great walk in the temptation Creek area of the park yesterday led by John Arney. Had a group of 10 people and ticked off many of the 115 plants on the plant list as well as added a few more ! Join us for our next event which will be a bird ID walk on Friday 23rd October at Bonnie Vale. Register on our site to receive updates. Free event, all welcome.
