25.01.2022 Not our working bee, but a restaurant the other day. FOTR has not yet been given permission to meet in the PWS reserve, so we won’t have a working bee tomorrow (10th October)
25.01.2022 White Brain fungus, Tremella fuciformis, is actually a favoured superfood in Chinese and other Asian cuisines. While tasteless, it is valued for its gelatinous texture (eg in dessert soups) as well as its supposed medicinal benefits (eg skincare and cough syrup). China cultivates some 130,000 tonnes per year of this parasitic fungus (so they also have to inoculate sawdust with the preferred host fungus)
24.01.2022 Some of us are heading to this fun Landcare event (put on by our very own Gill Basnett). Come along!
24.01.2022 Time for another working bee! We’ll meet 10am this Saturday 12th October at the top of Reatta Road, on the right hand side of the road opposite the water treatment plant. We haven’t been around this area for a while but there are a few gorse plants poking their heads up along the road. Nothing epic as it is an extra-long weekend (for those who were organised enough to book leave on Friday to complement the Show Day public holiday on Thursday). Weeding gear provided, see you there!
21.01.2022 Sparrowhawks and their nest were found! The small male had prey in its claws, and there was much excited calling by the pair and juvenile. We were really close to all the action. (PS See below for Lisa’s picture of bird on nest). Also grass seed spreading and watering of plants
21.01.2022 Our plantings at the old quarry are growing surprisingly well. Tomorrow we’ll spread native grass seed in between. Afterwards we’ll look for the sparrowhawk nest. Meet at top Gorge Rd carpark
20.01.2022 Wandering around in the bush, chatting and occasionally controlling scattered weeds - what’s not to like? Good job done by the team yesterday- hemlock, boneseed and various lilies
20.01.2022 Hi FOTR - working bee this Saturday 14th March 10am After last month's action-packed bee, when we spotted sparrowhawks, we are all keen for this weekend. Back to the spanish heath we have tackled in the past, under the big powerlines, we will be finding and taping the remaining weeds, ready for Tas Networks to do another spray. While weeds is what we seek, bring your eyes peeled for any bird or other wildlife action as we potter through the understorey. Tas Networks kindly ...responded to our call last year to deal with the spanish heath, which had spread widely and was beyond our ability to cut-and-paint. They have already sprayed twice, but it is difficult for contractors on this bushy hill to find all of the plants as they drag spray hoses about. Meet this Saturday 10am at the top New World Ave entrance, next to 125 New World Avenue. We will walk right up the hill to the mountain bike track, then work our way down the far side, seeking out spanish heath. If we find isolated plants, we'll kill them, but where there are patches we will tape them. Come with good walking shoes or boots, and gaiters or long pants. **Advance notice for an exciting bee in April - we will meet on the FIRST Saturday (4th April), as Easter is the following week - and a young reptile expert, Griffin, will show us some lizards and tell us all about them. He has even found threatened tussock skinks in the area around Hoo Hoo Hut, so who knows what we may find! Make sure you put this in your diary. Cheers!
18.01.2022 This Saturday, let’s plant these... here... Meet at Gorge Rd top carpark at 10am to get your hands dirty. (To be clear, FOTR didn’t close this quarry area, even though we were distressed by the proliferation of tracks and jumps beyond this area. It was a council decision and now we will help plant plants)
17.01.2022 New gas barbeque for Doyle Hut, Trevallyn Nature Recreation Area The team at Tamar Field Centre have recently installed a new gas barbeque to replace the aging ...wood fire barbeque at Doyle Hut. The old barbeque had fallen into disrepair. The gas barbeque will now allow visitors to enjoy barbeques at the reserve even during fire restriction periods over summer, while also protecting the reserve from fire wood gathering and possible escaped unattended fires. Field centre staff will be painting the existing picnic table in the shelter and hope to install two more renovated tables in the area surrounding the shelter. A nice renovation ready for visitors when the reserve reopens.
17.01.2022 You know that gorse on the RHS just as you enter the reserve on Reatta Rd? Well, it is no more! Converted to three piles like this. A Christmas present from FOTR to you!
17.01.2022 Lovely winter’s morning. We tackled Spanish Heath, two kinds of kunzea, bone seed, two kinds of mainland wattle and some sweet pittosporum. Very satisfying. Will need to come back next month to finish off where Tas Networks has sprayed Spanish Heath (but missed a fair amount)
16.01.2022 I was honoured to be highly commended last October for the Individual Landcarer Award, but too shy to tell FOTR about it. But since it's you guys who've made most of this happen, I realise it's time to share. Thanks FOTR for being a very positive part of my life
15.01.2022 We’ll meet at top Gorge Rd carpark tomorrow and get the gorse remains (remember when there was a dense patch of gorse here?). Our past plantings are flowering now and look great. See you 10am
15.01.2022 Thanks! Whoever did this, it’s nice to know others also know a weed and act to get rid of it
14.01.2022 The spinebill says Come to our working bee near Trevallyn Bowls Club this Saturday 10-12. OK!
11.01.2022 Don’t miss this Tas doco about cave spiders. I know, you’re thinking Spiders, really?, but this is not to be missed. Even all the cinema owners have raved to me about it
11.01.2022 Friends of Trevallyn Reserve working bee this Saturday 10th August 10am-12 Hi everyone This month (i.e. tomorrow) we're getting rid of some gorse along the last bit of road down to Trevallyn Dam. From memory there were a few bulbs down that way too so if we find any decent patches we'll flag them for Parks to spray. Being along a public road there's likely to be a bit of rubbish to pick up too.... Meeting 10am at the car park at the turn off to the Hoo Hoo Hut (technically the corner of Reatta Road and Duck Reach Road), it's about a 1km walk down to the dam. Dress warm as it's winter after all, and we will have all the tools you need. See you there on Saturday!
09.01.2022 We had an absolutely fabulous time with the lizards, thanks to the expertise of Griffin Piper, who kindly gave his time to share his love of reptiles with us. Hope we can do this again next year!
08.01.2022 Keeping the habitat good for this Bronzewing, let’s get rid of Spanish Heath tomorrow. Meet 10 am at entrance next to 125 New World Ave
06.01.2022 Our planting on Saturday was part of protecting the bush while providing a better jumps area for teenagers, thanks to Rob Potter’s great initiative. We are working with council now to find an alternative site for the younger kids as well.
05.01.2022 Great work yesterday, with ten of us spread out to remove some monster boneseed, passionvine, foreign wattles, Spanish heath and even some bridal creeper. Quite rugged work, so thanks team for being up for it. Beautiful bushland rewards
01.01.2022 Thanks to the small and determined group who tackled gorse, arum lily and rubbish below Gorge Rd on the way to the dam wall. Nice to come back from holidays and know it’s been taken care of. Rangers are going to get the big pile of rubbish that couldn’t be managed by FOTR
