25.01.2022 One of the first plantings by the Friends was the row of #StreakedWattle (Acacia lineata) along the top of the gabion wall. Now well established these wattles will form a back drop for the Care for the Rare garden along with the #Hardenbergia violacea that trails over the wall. The streaked wattle is really hardy and copes with frosts and heat as well as being good for erosion control. Birds love it to nest in and it attracts nectar eating birds, butterflies, bees and other insects. Visit Shepparton RiverConnect - Greater Shepparton Shepparton Mooroopna Urban Landcare Group

24.01.2022 It's spring and thanks to the winter rain our wildflowers are starting to appear. Look out for the yellow #SwampBillyButtons (Craspedia paludicola), Native #Buttercups (Ranuculus lappaceus) and #BulbineLilies (Bulbine bulbosa) along the Native Forest Walk. Also there are lots of Blue Devils (Eryngium ovinum) starting to appear, these look great in a couple of months time. Tip: The art of seeing our native wildflowers in the bushland area of at the Gardens is to 'look littl...e', it takes some practice but once you get your eye in, you will see the most amazing flowers. 22.01.2022 Dear Friends - after much discussion and checking of what we can and can not do we are aiming to hold our Annual General Meeting on Wednesday 18th November at 5pm. This will be held in an outdoor undercover area at Kensington Gardens. (Please drive to the carpark end of the club house and park near mail boxes then follow the path along behind the clubhouse). If you would like to become involved with the Friends, we would welcome new committee members. We have nominations f...or our main positions covered (unless there are others who wish to stand and that would be most welcome) we do have some tasks that could be spread around to relieve those people. Maybe a minute secretary, someone and to take tours around the gardens etc... If you cannot attend but would be willing to go on committee (NOTE we aim to only hold 6 meetings in 2021 with circulatory email communication in between if necessary) please let Karen, Collier or myself know, or send a message via Facebook and we will forward a form or one can be filled out at the meeting. Our meeting times and days are flexible if our current regime does not suit you. To be eligible to vote or nominate for a position you must be a current financial member, we will have a list of current members on the day and membership payments can be made on the day. Looking forward to seeing everyone again, in line with our COVID plan we ask you to bring your own water bottle as we are unable to share food and drink at this stage. 16.01.2022 Have you seen these gorgeous new plants in our Care for the Rare garden beds along the gabion wall as you walk to the picnic shelter? 16.01.2022 The mass planting of the beautiful #ClayWattle (Acacia glaucoptera) looks stunning down the western end of Honeysuckle Rise. A small compact shrub that grows between .5 to 1.5m. it is well worth the walk down to the Terrace Garden to see. Its singular globular flowers grow close to the stems making it a very ornate shrub. Not only does it tolerates frost and can be used for erosion control - perfect shrub for the side if Honeysuckle Rise. 16.01.2022 Our beautiful native rushes and sedges are often overlooked. Flowering now in the Weaving Garden they were selected for their suitability for use in #weaving. Thanks to Council's maintenance schedule, the cauldrons are kept topped up with water keeping them happy over the drier months. If you are out at the Gardens over the weekend here are the plant names for each cauldron. If you can't make it - we hope you enjoy this selection of photos. 15.01.2022 The star of the Terrace Garden at the moment is the beautiful red One-sided Bottle Brush (Calothamnus quadrifidus). Occurring naturally in SW Western Australia this heavily branched evergreen shrub provides a spectacular display of red flowers. It copes well with all conditions and adapts to all soil types with good drainage. What a star - plus our resident Blue Wrens love it too. 15.01.2022 This lovely little red flower is a Grevillea alpina, or Cats-claw Grevillea. It's a common species in our region, widespread, with a lot of variation within the species (wide range of different forms, flower colours etc.). Very hardy and pretty. 14.01.2022 Make the most of the last week in September to check out the Wattles flowering at the Gardens. Did you know that the first official sprig of wattle appeared on the Commonwealth of Australia emblem in 1912? It wasn't until 1988 that the #GoldenWattle (Acacia pycnantha) was formally adopted as the floral emblem of Australia. Native to SE Australia it is part of our Fabaceae collection and you will find them at the Gardens at the Refugee Garden lectern. Growing to 8m, they flower profusely during winter and spring. 10.01.2022 Walk and Weed will be the focus of the Weed Warriors for the month of May. Meet at the front gate, grab a bag and your preferred weeding implement at 9am for a gentle walk. The plan is to stop regularly and weed patches of rib wort along the way.

10.01.2022 Recently planted in the Food Garden, Sclerolaena napiformis, or Turnip Copperburr is a really endangered plant, and is listed on both the Environment Protection Biodiversity Conservation Act and the Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act. The government has a species recovery plan for it, and the Turnip Copperburr plants that we just planted at the Gardens as part of our Care for the Rare collection are part of a much bigger project that has been running for many years. Seed has been ...collected over years from as many wild locations as possible, and our new plants are the result of all this hard work. We are so very lucky to be a part of this project and thanks to Landscape design architect Mel Stagg ( https://staggdla.com/ ) for giving her time to oversee the planting with the onsite staff from Greater Shepparton City Council. Mel has been involved with this project for a while now through her work at the Euroa Arboretum Inc and the Goulburn Broken Indigenous Seedbank mapping Turnip Copperburr populations in the Goulburn Broken region, and collecting seed from these wild populations. The staff at the Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria who supplied the Copperburr plants for the Australian Botanic Gardens Shepparton, have asked her to map out the layout for them, so the plant genetics can be tracked as part of their research. 06.01.2022 The announcement you have all been waiting for - Working Bees, Propagation and Weed Warriors are all recommencing, starting with our Sunday working bee this Sunday at 9am. We have a COVID Safe plan approved by Council that we will run through at the start of each session to keep everyone safe and healthy whilst being active and productive. The major result of the COVID plan is that there will be no morning teas (i.e. shared foods) so please bring your own water bottles and if... you wish to have a cuppa after bring your own cup coffee tea etc. There will still be a chance to catch up on what has been happening and results of interaction with Council staff as well as our own exchanges re what we have been doing. The other item is shared equipment. If you could bring your own gloves and maybe secateurs and the larger items i.e. shovels rakes etc. we will wipe with disinfectant wipes. Don't worry if you do not have any we can dunk our tools which are to be used in a bucket of water and disinfectant. As these activities are all outside spacing allowance is not a problem we just need to remember 1.5metres and masks. Propagation will start back on the 4th Wednesday and dates for Weed Warriors will be advised as soon as they have been confirmed. Look forward to seeing everyone again.
