24.01.2022 The reserves are still open at this stage but all events have been cancelled until further notice. This includes the cancellation of this year’s Four Peaks Challenge. You can still learn all about the Reserves by checking out our website: https://www.mtleura.org.au/

24.01.2022 Remember to pop into Laffs Camperdown for the month of September and check out their sale section, with $1 of every item sold going to the Friends of Mt Leura Inc. Here's to two incredible community assets that have both remained open during the lock downs, both serving the community in their own important ways. Thanks so much Kym and all the Laffs team for your tireless support of everything our little area has to offer, and recognising the people who make it happen #lovewhereyoulive #shoplocal #camperdown #mtleura

23.01.2022 Hi all ... just a brief report re our working bee at the Lower Shelter/VEC area this morning. A fantastic turn up meant we had a big clean up of leaves, small branches and bark from the garden beds and paths; did some necessary pruning of branches etc for visual and safety reasons; a bit of weeding and also a bit of seed collecting rounded off the activities. The area now looks much more loved!! Our working bees are always a productive 90 minutes with lots of chats and always finish with coffee and another chance to catch up with friends. Arky

22.01.2022 Last day to get in to Laffs and purchase something from their amazing sale section and see $1 go to the Friends of Mt Leura and contribute to looking after the incredible Mt Leura & Mt Sugarloaf Reserves

22.01.2022 Another glorious (& chilly) morning! Reserve users please note weed control spraying happening on the trails, car park and roadside areas today.

21.01.2022 Under normal circumstances we would be celebrating NAIDOC week with community events. Things are a little different this year and we are unsure if we will be able to hold our annual flag raising and welcome ceremony later this year. However, the Friends of Mt Leura and the Management Committee would like to Acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land and recognise their continuing connection to land, water and culture. On behalf of the committee we pay our respects to... their Elders, past, present and emerging. "Always was, Always will be." For more information about NAIDOC visit - https://www.naidoc.org.au/

19.01.2022 Native Grasslands, a critically endangered vegetation community. Some of the plants featured in this clip have been planted in the lower shelter garden at Mount Leura.

19.01.2022 Nominations are open until the end of March for volunteer positions on the Mount Leura & Mt Sugarloaf Management Committee. https://www.corangamite.vic.gov.au//MtLeuraSugarloafnomina

19.01.2022 Great to have our first post lockdown activity .... our annual February plant propagation workshop. Thanks to state government Volunteers Grant we kicked off with a great morning tea and then into the mornings task ... our 15 attendees made quick work of the propagation task ... 2200 cells across 19 different plants including everlasting, bellybutton, clematis, kangaroo apple, various indigenous grasses etc. It was fantastic to see so many people turn up ... especially the new faces. Some photos from the day attached. Huge congrats to John and Caroline for helping make this such a success. Arky

19.01.2022 Thanks Currell Signs. We love these new name labels that have been added to the wildlife on our Volcanic Education Centre. The labels include the traditional name in Gunditjmara Langauge.

18.01.2022 View from the office today. Reserve users please note weed control spraying happening on the upper trails, car park and roadside areas this morning. Cheers and happy and safe New Year everyone!

16.01.2022 Here’s an opportunity to apply for a volunteer position on the Mt Leura and Mt Sugarloaf Management Committee. https://www.corangamite.vic.gov.au//Mt-Leura-Mt-Sugarloaf-

13.01.2022 Been an astounding season for growing things....including weeds! Heads up that spraying of broadleaf weeds is happening on the Mt Leura & Sugarloaf Reserves this morning, including this invasive beauty, Sweet Pea. Alright in the garden, but not what we want taking over our Reserves. Please excuse my poor smart phone photography skills (the breeze was not helping).

13.01.2022 Great work Arky, who gave a presentation all about the local landscape and the Mt Leura and Mt Sugarloaf Reserves and its amazing restoration project to the local Historical Society on the weekend. Arky has been instrumental from the beginning of the restoration project decades ago, has shared his passion far and wide, inspired so many of the younger generations, and truly is a local treasure

12.01.2022 Over the last 2 weeks the Mount Leura and Mount Sugarloaf Management Committee, with the assistance of a Working for Victoria team, have acheived a massive amount of work on the reserves. Visitors will notice some new additions and the whole area looking maintained and tidy. The recent activities include; revegetation, fencing, tree guards, weeding, pruning, signage, painting, mulching, repairing, cleaning and litter collecting. ... We’ve worked to ensure all areas and aspects of the reserve have been assessed, hazards reduced or removed and infrastructure repaired and maintained. Tracks have been recently mowed and are looking great. Thanks to everyone involved and we hope you enjoy your time on the reserves.

11.01.2022 This is the ideal time for planting at Mt Leura. Recent rainfall has watered them in well, and the ground is starting to warm up. The annual community planting day is off the cards this year but the committee and a Working for Victoria team have been busy preparing, fencing, planting and guarding. We’re focusing on establishing some native understory and midstory plants (shrubs, rushes, tussocks) to provide habitat for birds. And we are trialling some different methods of preventing browsing damage by comparing heavy-duty wire mesh guards to clusters of plantings with ringlock macropod fencing.

11.01.2022 The Mount Leura lower garden is looking fantastic at the moment. Check out the colour from these native wildflowers which have been grown, planted and cared for by volunteers.

10.01.2022 Remember to join us online this morning @11am as we raise the flag and celebrate the start of NAIDOC week. Always Was. Always Will Be.

07.01.2022 Hi to all our followers ... just a brief update from today's plant propagation workshop .. the first of 2 for 2020 and our 13th year of such workshops. 1920 cells were seeded across 15 different species of plants .... mostly of wildflowers found out on our local volcanic plain. Plants from today's activity will add to our demonstration planting at the base of Mt Leura at the Volcanic Education Centre in September. A few photos of some of today's fantastic turn up.... 22 participants including 2 young children. Arky

05.01.2022 What a team .... our Lower Shelter demonstration garden is not only well weeded, as of today the lomandra, dianella, clustered everlasting and tussock grass have all had a late autumn prune. Really looking forward to watching the new growth slowly emerging. Big thanks to John, Caroline, Rebecca, Jill and Michael. Arky.

02.01.2022 Hi all - the flag raising and Welcome to Country will be starting shortly, hang in there!

01.01.2022 MUSHROOM IDENTIFICATION WORKSHOPS NOW ONLINE The brilliant fungi expert ALISON POULIOT, who came to Mt Leura and the Stony Rises last year, is hosting online mushroom identification sessions this fungi season! Although the world is in lockdown, the fungi are running riot out there in the forest. The recent rains could mean we are in for a bumper fungus season. ... Why do fungi matter in our forests and gardens? What makes Australian fungi so special? And how do we differentiate the desirable from the deadly? These online workshops introduce participants to the diversity, ecology and curiosities of the Kingdom Fungi. Participants will learn to recognise the major fungus morphogroups; the various parts of different types of fungi; and the features used to make identifications. During an interactive session we will then work through participants' specimens and identify and discuss them together. While it would have been great to be out in the forest, at least we won’t be wrangling with leeches! Follow the link below for all the info and help spread the word about this great opportunity!
