24.01.2022 This is Council's latest attempt at fixing pooling stormwater at the bottom of Mindarie St. Friends of Port Willunga had previously raised concerns about an earlier excavation, and had received encouraging response about a better approach. And then this. An ugly, crude "drain" that runs into Port Willunga Linear Park and the creek, where FOPW Bush Gardeners are working with Council to increase biodiversity. A case of the right hand not knowing what the left is doing? This is just one of several issues the FOPW are working on. We need your support to make a strong case to Council and State Government. Please join us by going to our website and signing up - friendsofportwillunga.org.au

20.01.2022 Sue and Ash Read have provided an update on the Pt Willunga Hooded Plovers - Unfortunately both Hooded Plover nests at Port Willunga were washed away by the strom on Tuesday 22nd September. Both pairs are still on site and we expect they will nest again soon.

20.01.2022 If you haven't yet responded to the Onkaparinga Council Have Your Say about the Port Willunga North Coast Park (Coastal Trail) the survey has been extended so you have until the 6 November 2020 to respond. Janelle Arbon, Project Leader, has indicated that the extension will allow them to reach more of the community and gain valuable insights into how best to improve access, manage vegetation and protect environmentally and culturally sensitive sites. For more information, to view the concept design and leave feedback, please visit our dedicated webpage at www.onkaparingacity.com/yoursay

17.01.2022 Hooded Plovers at Port Willunga The two resident pairs of Hooded Plovers have now started nesting. Daphne and Harvey have a nest between Lion's Head and Blanche Point while JT and partner have nested north of the Star of Greece carpark. Both nests have been fenced to protect the nests with signs to inform beach goers about the nests and what they can do to avoid disturbing the birds. Hopefully with the continued interest and cooperation of the public we will have another successful breeding season. Last year's juvenile from JT and partner is still in the area near Snapper Point and is now almost in full adult plumage. Sue and Ash Read

17.01.2022 Hooded Plover Update Loss of chick at Pt Willunga Sadly, JT and his partner's chick did not survive it's first week. Without seeing what happened we can only assume the chick was taken by a predator. Hooded Plover tracks indicate the family needed to feed outside the fenced area away from suitable hiding places in the dunes. The pair are now often seen inside the fenced area and are likely to nest again in the near future.... Sue and Ash

15.01.2022 Hooded Plovers at Pt Willunga - Update The resilient pair JT and partner have nested again following the loss of the chick from their first nest. The nest is located in the fenced area just north of the Star of Greece carpark. We hope they have better luck with this nest. Beach users can help by keeping clear of the fenced area. Sue and Ash

15.01.2022 New Hooded Plover chick at Port Willunga Exciting news. The Hoodies surprised volunteers by succefully hatching one chick from the nest near the Star of Greece carpark on Tuesday 13th October. It seems they managed to save 2 of their eggs from the nest that was washed by the storm on the 22nd September. As there is only one chick it is likely the other egg was not viable. The fencing has been extended around part of the creek to provide the chick with a safe feeding area. Could you please look out for them on the beach as they may venture out of this area sometimes. You can help by walking along the water's edge, leashing your dogs and keeping clear of the fenced area as the chick cannot fly for 5 weeks.

12.01.2022 Hooded Plovers Update Daphne and Harvey's chick is now 22 days old and growing strongly. Though still fluffy, the chick is starting to stretch and strengthen it's developing wings. It is now much more visible and spends more time in the open. This means the chick is more vulnerable to predators. You can help the chick's chances of survival by minimising disturbance and keeping your dog under effective control or on a lead. JT and partner, nesting just north of the Star of Gr...eece carpark, are expecting their eggs to hatch from the nest sometime this week. Please look out for them as the chicks will move in and out of the fenced area in search of food. Thank you for your cooperation, Friends of the Hooded Plover volunteers See more

07.01.2022 Daphne and Harvey's chick is now entering it's second week and is doing well. The family is often feeding in the dead seaweed some distance north of the nest enclosure. Please look out for them and give them space as they may be feeding anywhere on the beach. Thank you for your continued support, Friends of the Hooded Plover Volunteers

04.01.2022 Council is inviting us to help name a new coastal drive - we think it's a no brainer to call it the Wine Coast Drive but please let Council know what you think! https://yoursay.onkaparinga.sa.gov.au/coastal-drive-naming

04.01.2022 What a great morning for our get-together in the Linear Park to hear about the revegetation of the area along Martin Rd, to do some weeding and to learn more about which weeds to remove and which plants to protect. Thank you David Milner for getting us together and encouraging us to help look after the revegetated areas through the open space south of the creek and the plans for the revegetation of the old caravan park, David Seaton for the use of his trailer to remove the we...eds and for his ongoing work keeping the weeds under control and to the friends of Pt Willunga who joined us. We were very pleased to welcome Janelle Arbon (Council Project Officer for the Coast Park) who walked with us and talked through the proposed plan for the shared path at Port Willunga North linking Maslin Beach car park to Port Willunga foreshore car park and invited us to respond to the plan at www.onkaparingacity.com/yoursay from 14 Sept (tomorrow) to 9 Oct 2020. 02.01.2022 Hooded Plover Update Daphne and Harvey now have a new chick which hatched on the 2nd of November. At this stage because the parents are being protective we are not sure if there is more than one chick present as there were 3 eggs in the nest. The family has been moving outside ot the fenced area and will need to feed on the open beach so please look out for them, leash your dog and walk along the water's edge to give them space to retreat back up the beach if they need to Thank you for your cooperation. Sue and Ash

02.01.2022 Hooded Plover Update The chick is thriving as it enters it's third week since hatching. It is almost half adult size and is very active often feeding well outside the fenced area and was once seen on the rocks at Blanche Point at the far northern end of the beach Lately there has been up to 4 other adult Hoodies present on the beach. Daphne and Harvey are'nt happy with these birds coming too close to their chick and have been seen chasing them away. The nest near the creek n...orth of the Star of Greece carpark is due to hatch near the end of November. Thank you for your continued cooperation. Friends of the Hooded Plover Volunteers See more
