25.01.2022 This spectacular Queensland Bottle Tree in the Arboretums Dry Rainforest Zone is definitely worthy of a hug! Cr Kim Marx (left) and Cr Fiona Cunningham certainly felt that way when they inspected Sherwood Arboretum with the Curator of Brisbane Botanic Gardens, Dale Arvidsson and FOSA last Thursday. The two Councillors, Chairs (respectively) of City Standards and Environment, Parks and Sustainability, were keen to better understand this botanic garden of trees as Council work...s to improve the Arboretum in the lead up to its centenary in 2025. Councils 2020 - 2021 budget includes $862,000 over the next four financial years for improvements to the Arboretums built and living assets. Theres also an additional $319,000 this financial year for care of the valued collection of 1100 Australian native trees. For the record, this iconic Queensland Bottle Tree was planted to commemorate the visit to the Arboretum by Dame Ann Parker-Bowles, Commonwealth Commissioner for Guiding, during her Australian tour in 1971.

You are most welcome to join our working bee at 8.00 am this Sunday 21 March, starting at the Arboretum garden shed at the Joseph Street (northern) entry. Last month, our working bee (pictured) made a real difference to the eastern habitat gully with the planting of more canopy trees to provide shade for understory plants. We accomplished a lot in just two hours of volunteer work!

22.01.2022 Thank you to FOSA members Louise and Lincoln Johnston for helping record the harvesting of the water hyacinth in the Sherwood Arboretum wetlands over the past couple of weeks. Water hyacinth, a declared weed of state and national significance, heavily infested both lakes during last summer. The outbreak follows the drying of the northern lake just before the start of the summer rains. Council will follow up the mechanical harvesting with contractors to remove the remaining water hyacinth by hand from both lakes over the coming months.

19.01.2022 Sherwood Arboretum, Brisbanes third botanic gardens, was very fortunate this week to have a special visitor, the Lord Mayor Cr Adrian Schrinner. The Lord Mayor honoured a promise he made last February to pay his first official visit to the Arboretum, subject then of course to the Local Government election results. The Assistant Curator of Brisbane Botanic Gardens and Sherwood Arboretum, Prue McGruther outlined the Arboretums historical and botanical significance and the ke...y needs of this 95-year-old heritage-listed Arboretum during Cr Schrinners visit. Our Friends community has been very keen to present fresh ideas to the Lord Mayor on working in partnership with Council to help ensure the Arboretum offers Brisbane residents a world-class visitor experience by the 2025 centenary of this botanic garden of trees. During the inspection, the Lord Mayor managed a warm hug for one of the favourite trees in the Queensland Kauri Avenue, the Kauri planted by Brisbanes first Lord Mayor, William Jolly on the 21 March 1925 at the opening of the Arboretum. Pictured (from right): The Lord Mayor Cr Adrian Schrinner, Assistant Curator Prue McGruther and Friends President Andrew Benison enjoy one of the Arboretums eye-catching features, the historic Queensland Kauri Avenue.

09.01.2022 A rare speckled or Dalmatian magpie has been spotted at Sherwood Arboretum. Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner said that while speckled magpies have been observed in other parts of the country, the Arboretum sighting may well be a first for Brisbane. The speckled magpie has a genetic colour mutation, known as leucism, which is similar to albinism.... The Chief Scientist of The Nature Conservatory, Professor Hugh Possingham, said the Arboretum was the perfect place for birdwatching and a favourite of the magpie. Magpies, as many of us can testify, are fiercely territorial and family groups raise and defend their territories together, he said. Because they are abundant and widespread, a number of different mutations have been observed in magpies, including albinism (whiter feathers with eyes with reddish pupils), leucism (whiter feathers with normal eye colour) and melanism (blacker feathers).

08.01.2022 Please come along for a couple of hours this Sunday from 8:00am and give a hand to the Arboretum. As rain has fallen, and the soil is moistened, we will be planting ground layer plants along North Creek, to create habitat for frogs that are at present using the weedy grass, Green panic. We will create this refuge for them and let it build some maturity, before the weed grass is removed at some stage in the future. We will meet at the Shed at the Joseph St entrance. Best to wear cover up shoes and clothes, and hat. Please bring your own gloves.

05.01.2022 Here are a few extra photos from Arbor Day last week. The idea for Arbor Day was first proposed by Julius Sterling Morton, the editor of Nebraska’s first newspaper, the Nebraska City News. The first Arbor Day held on 10 April, 1872 was an outstanding success with Nebraskans planting an estimated one million trees. Today, Arbor Day is celebrated around the world in at least 44 countries. Queensland’s first Arbor Day was held on 1 August 1890 when the then Curator of Brisbane... Botanic Gardens, Philip MacMahon distributed 2496 trees to schools. Sherwood Arboretum is certainly keeping up the tradition. Last Thursday, the Lord Mayor, Cr Adrian Schrinner and Cr Fiona Cunningham, Chair of Environment, Parks and Sustainability, joined students from Sherwood State School and St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School in planting six new Arbor Day trees. Our Patron, Professor Hugh Possingham (pictured with Lord Mayor) joined the Arbor Day celebrations, along with the Curator of Brisbane Botanic Gardens, Dale Arvidsson (along with those green hearts promoting tree planting).

03.01.2022 One of the grand old fig trees in Sherwood Arboretum has just been given an extra lease of life thanks to a great job in repairing a large decaying wound close to the trunk. Councils contractor, Heritage Tree Care came to the rescue by first removing the decaying material, treating the wound with fungicide and moulded a new capping to fig snuggly over the gaping wound of a wonderful Moreton Bay Fig, most likely planted in the 1930s or early 1940s near the river. Lets hope the tree will definitely celebrate its 100th birthday and more!
