24.01.2022 We've thanked former Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull for joining his prime ministerial colleague Kevin Rudd by signing his parliamentary petition calling for a Royal Commission into the influence of the Murdoch empire on the independence of Australian media. Now all we need is for both former prime ministers to round up their respective party leaders to urge them to treat this issue as a priority. You can read more about this here: https://www.abcfriends.org.au/thank_you_mal...colm_turnbull And if you haven't already done so you can join ABC Friends and Mr Turnbull in signing the petition calling for a Royal Commission into Media Ownership and Influence in Australian Media here>>https://www.aph.gov.au/petition_list?id=EN1938 And sign ours here too>>https://www.abcfriends.org.au/abcfunding

24.01.2022 Only nine percent of Australians support the government's savage cuts to the ABC, while more than 3/4 of us want the slashing of services to stop! Meanwhile, Scott Morrison is giving tens of millions of taxpayer dollars to Rupert Murdoch... 24.01.2022 If Paul Fletcher's Communication Department are able to fast track money to prop up Murdoch's commercial FOXTEL sports coverage to the tune of $17.5 million, we eagerly await the announcement of fast tracked funding to restore the ABC's 7:45AM news broadcast, rehiring the 250 staff laid off, independent screen production funds, staff and journalist travel budgets... need we go on? Almost 6,000 Australians have signed our petition calling for a Senate Enquiry into ABC Funding..., including looking at the impact of diverting public broadcasting resources to overseas and local commercial interests. 23.01.2022 It is important to recognise that the ABC is NOT a Government instrument, department, public sector agency or entity. Under the 1983 ABC Act, the Australian Broadcasting Corporation is a statutorily independent body, independent of Government. 14.01.2022 ABC Staff have been praised for their commitment to public broadcasting, especially during this year's natural disaster and pandemic emergencies. Sadly, 250 of these wonderful professionals have been made redundant by government funding decisIons which has put huge pressure on the ABC to reduce staff and programming. ABC Friends very much regrets that our national broadcaster has now lost over 1250 staff in recent years.... We thank ABC staff for their dedication to all Australians and wish them well. We very much hope there will be future renewal of Australian public broadcasting when government recognises its very wide ranging benefit and value to the community. ABC Friends urges all Australians to show their appreciation. #ValueOurABC #FundOurABC #EssentialABC

13.01.2022 ABC Friends recognises that there are many well qualified individuals who should apply to join the ABC Board and urges those people to put their names forward. It is time the selection process was made totally transparent so ABC shareholders, the people of Australia, can be assured that the political interference of previous appointments is not repeated.

10.01.2022 Freedom of the press and the role of journalists within democracies has never been under such sustained attack. Think of Julian Assange, Witness K, Bernard Collaery, David McBride, Richard Boyle, the AFP raids on the ABC and News Corp’s Annika Smethurst. Join us for this online broadcast with Quentin Dempster AM, former Chair of the Walkley Foundation and veteran journalist, broadcaster and author, in conversation with University of South Australia's Professor Rick Sarre. We ...encourage ABC Friends everywhere to register now for this joint event being co-run by ABC Friends SA/NT and University of South Australia's Bob Hawke Centre. 10.01.2022 The ABC is being weakened maliciously and systematically, just when it is most needed in democratic Australia. 09.01.2022 The Friends have a new calendar for 2021: Resilience & Renewal. Order yours NOW for a Xmas present - mail is a bit slower this year>>https://www.abcfriends.org.au/calendar At the end of this extraordinary year, ABC Friends and their friends have shared their personal responses to Australia’s recent devastating fires, the impact of the ongoing pandemic and the inevitable changes in all our lives. These are our stories of resilience and hope for 2021.

08.01.2022 ABC Friends commend Senator Sarah Hanson-Young on her recognition of the role that public broadcasting and good journalism plays in democracy. We agree that the tech giants, like Facebook and Google, need to pay their fair share, and that the ACCC need to include our public broadcasters in the code for digital platforms currently under development. We, like many Australians, are deeply concerned about the shift of government support to the commercial media sector rather than recognising its responsibility to maintain the ABC and SBS. #FundOurABC #ValueOurABC #DefendMediaFreedom

05.01.2022 The ABC and those who rely on it want, nay, deserve more! The Federal Budget offered no respite to the ABC with further reduction in funding in coming years and no announcement about repairing transmitters for the coming bush fire season. 04.01.2022 There is considerable community concern about the way the Federal Government has continually reduced funding for Australian public broadcasting while at the same time subsidising overseas and commercial media. 04.01.2022 In August ABCFriends launched a petition calling on the Senate to inquire into the way the ABC and commercial media are being funded by the Federal Government. Sadly, few senators have responded yet. Are Senators worried they may be criticised by foreign media? Now Kevin Rudd has decided it is time to take on the Murdoch Empire and is demand a full blown Royal Commission into Media Ownership and Influence in Australian Media. 04.01.2022 We need to know who is exerting outside pressure to favour commercial media over Our ABC: is it News Limited or the Institute of Public Affairs? This Government is continually favouring overseas or commercial media by offering cosy deals that are neither transparent nor in the public interest. 03.01.2022 ABC Friends today praised the ABC for its outstanding continuous coverage of the US Presidential Election over recent days. Not only did Australians have access to reliable news as the count proceeded, but ABC staff had also initiated a wide range of interviews with both Australian and American experts who could give detailed insights into the election process. Check out our post here >> https://www.abcfriends.org.au/congratulations_abc_continuou

02.01.2022 Paul Murphy has passed away at age 77. Many ABC Friends will remember Paul Murphy the host of ABC PM 1983-1993. He was a giant of his generation" bringing his warm voice of humanity to political journalism as he reported on day to day local events as well as being there just when world events required his foreign correspondent reporting skills.... He was highly regarded by his colleagues for his wit and wisdom and I personally recall some of his fearless interviewing during the Hawke and Keating years. Paul will be remembered for bringing his professionalism to programs like This Day Tonight, Nationwide and Dateline. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. Vale Paul Murphy, a Wonderful Communicator. https://www.abcfriends.org.au/vale_paul_murphy

01.01.2022 ABC Friends welcome the ALP commitment to guarantee that Google and Facebook should pay ABC and SBS fees for news content. This announcement by Michelle Rowland MP, Shadow Minister for Communications, is a clear warning to the government that it cannot favour the commercial media sector ahead of public broadcasting for which government has a specific responsibility. The new code to force Google and Facebook to pay for the value they receive in distribution of Australian jour...nalism must be extended to include the ABC and SBS. The News Media Bargaining Code is creating interest around the world because it is challenging global media control over local public interest journalism.
