24.01.2022 There will hopefully be a meeting soon to discuss options for celebrations (date to be advised, but looking at next weekend)
23.01.2022 We were excited to hear that Mudgee Little Learners had an excursion with their school aged children out to visit the Mudgee Camping Tree on Tuesday. Its always wonderful to hear of people visiting the Tree, and we especially love children learning about the story behind it. If we dont preserve the history and teach generations to come the significance of this tree, it will be lost. Again with many thanks going to the Mid Western Regional Council for supporting the Friends of the tree, and helping to keep it looking tidy and loved. Thanks Little Learners for sharing your photo with us, looks like you had a great time!
20.01.2022 We received a lovely message today along with a picture of MPS children at the camping tree on an excursion which involved several Year 4 classes to complement the history study they have been doing at school. We absolutely love seeing and hearing about this, and that the tree is recognised and accessed by the school! There are many willing volunteers with the tree who would be happy to even assist any other classes or groups doing the same with history of the tree, or work that is being done to preserve it etc they are so proud of whats been accomplished and would love for it to be appreciated by more locals!
20.01.2022 So from what people are adding to comments here and on the community page, its pretty obvious the general public call B.S to the 2038 date. For starters we would absolutely love some input from the indigenous community regarding this. If anyone is a part of, or knows someone who is a part of the Wiradjuri or an Elder here, please feel free to private message or comment, there is no disrespect meant by any of this and it should be worked on as a community and celebrated to th...e best of our strengths, and in the utmost respect of our true and original land owners! As far as my understanding of the term "gazetting" it is only putting it into print that Mudgee was a town, and is the print not just government journalling??! How is this more respectful to our indegenous heritage? I personally think all of Mudgees people should be celebrating this as a community, not as whites and blacks. Yes atrocities happened in this area, its disgusting I dont know anyone who would argue that, and we are not celebrating this. We are celebrating what Mudgee has become, and if this is even help in 2038 the meaning behind it as a town does not change! I Encourage anyone interested toalso watch this video link to the council meeting discussing this.. Section 6--- http://webcast.midwestern.nsw.gov.au/arch/video18-0418.php See more
20.01.2022 Hello followers!!! It's been a long time since we have updated this page due to some illness taking over the lives of our main Friends of the tree, but it's time to start getting things rolling again hopefully! For starters if you would like to receive updates, please send you email address via the private message button here and we can add you to the list, this is mainly updates of what's happened so far or what is planned and when meetings are proposed for brainstorming! W...e have had several ideas from various volunteers, but would like everyone to have a good old think, and bring your ideas to the meeting. The proposed meeting will be held at the Mudgee Bakery, Market Street, in the section closest to Lewis Street, from 10.00 a.m. on Wednesday 23rd October 2019. This will be an informal chat, but we would like you to think about the following:--before a more formal meeting can be called at a later date:-- 1. Should we contact 2MG to advertise the second meeting in the FREE Community advertisements ? The Mudgee Guardian again (has previously been unsuccessful) This would be to find out if they would be interested in mentioning the work that has been, and is being done at the Camping Tree, in preparation for the bicentennial in 2021. 2. Can you think of anyone who would be interested in becoming a volunteer to assist in the planning of, or help physically in the envisaged work to be done before, or on that October weekend 2021 ? 3. If you could find time, would you visit Lawson Park and view the signage, close to the bridge and river which the Council has provided. Similar signage is at the Wet Lands car park. 4. Ideas so far are for a covered timber, similar to the one at the Munghorn Reserve (Parks and Wildlife structure) which could stand (X marks the spot ?) with THREE of the above mentioned signs on one side. Board 1 . . . Pre-European history with pictures and text as decided upon by consultation with the local aboriginal community. Board 2 . . . The first settlement by Europeans near the Historic Camping Tree with pictures, photographs and text from our local history. Board 3 . . . The move from this site to the present site of Mudgee, and it’s gazetting as a village up to 1838. 5. If we have some money left from what has been allocated by the Council, would it be a good idea to have, on the other side of this information board, illustrations and text about the animal life found at this Reserve, such as Platypus, snakes, birds, fish (except the wonderful Carp !) ? Thank you if you have read this far! We would love more volunteers to come on board whether it be for some fresh ideas, to offer some physical help or to offer contacts to get some things happening! Please feel free to comment below, or to private message the page, any feedback would be appreciated :D
19.01.2022 Hi Mudgee and beyond. Just a topic for discussion regarding the Bicentenary of Mudgee being decided by a nearly tied vote as taking place in 2038 rather than 2021?! Do people in general agree with this?!! Even though the Centenary was celebrated in 1921, and an apparently quite elaborate Sesquicentenary taking over the streets nearly 50 years ago! We would love to get your input (There is a detailed Report/Agenda regarding celebrations available online, the link is here for anyone interested) http://www.midwestern.nsw.gov.au//report-council-meeting-2
18.01.2022 So great to have our next generation learning about the Camping tree and Mudgee history!
18.01.2022 So just a short update on how the tree looks currently. Brian H has been the driving factor behind even organising a group of volunteers to work together and get council on board with investing in the Camping tree. So far he has swayed council to give a grant to trim all dead and dangerous branches from the tree to preserve what is left, which has already been completed. The tree branches are short, but now capped to prevent any further rotting and keep the tree standing for ...another 200 yrs! The council have also been amazing so far at not only giving a set grant to build a new fence around the tree itself, but then going above and beyond that amount to invest in a better quality fence which is quite impressive! The work around the area has also been ongoing, with council coming on board to not only maintain the area and spray weeds etc but in putting in barrier of poles to stop cars driving past a certain point. The next steps are in action, to hopefully continue with improvements, which will in Brians and the Friends of the trees vision, include a beautiful sign with information relating to the tree and its history, and more signage on the main road so locals and visitors actually know where it is, and it can become recognised for its importance! 14.01.2022 Introducing some of the Friends of the tree... *cue cheesy music
12.01.2022 Again we would like to point out how amazing the council has been up to this point at coming to the party with funds for a new fence around the tree, and the arborist needed to trim and protect the tree for the future! Big (Y) and cheers to council! BUT as pointed out on a shared post today, the signage is somewhat "lacking" at the moment. Many times we hear "where is the tree" so the friends of the tree have been discussing signs needed to identify the tree, outline the his...tory and significance of it, and also let people know where it is! Options discussed so far have been different styles to place at the tree with history etc, signage on the main road (big signs so anyone can see its a great place to visit!) and a road sign that is more obvious than the current one right at the turn into the Camping tree itself. The discussion has also been around applying to council to get further grants to cover these options and to assist in completing projects like these and the walking traack from Glen Willow/wetlands to the tree! (Information about that will be upcoming posts!) SO here is a few examples of other signs, and also a current picture of the beautiful fence that now stands proudly around the Camping tree! See more
11.01.2022 Hi everyone. Over the past few days we have hopefully given you some good visuals of the before and after tree clean up. NOW the time has come for some much needed input and possibly assistance from the community!! IF you have ideas please let us know! IF you have contacts who can help, please let us know! IF you are willing to get more involved personally please let us know!! I will copy and paste parts of the email from the organiser of the "friends of the tree" group b...Continue reading

08.01.2022 Hello Friends of the tree! The main man behind the Camping Tree refurbishment, future plans and caretaking has organised to access the museum this Sunday at 2pm for a get together for anyone interested in the ongoing plans for the tree and a chance to give some feedback or ideas for the HCT. Chances are the bicentenary will not be mentioned at all *note sarcasm... Anyone is welcome to attend, all they have to do is show up. There will be coffee and tea available and possibly biscuits or cake, with the proposition of a gold coin donation to cover this. Hope to see you there!
08.01.2022 Just a quick access post with links to previous articles featured in the Mudgee Guardian..
01.01.2022 Over the next few days you will be seeing some before and after pictures of the Historic Camping tree. There has been an amazing team of volunteers who have committed themselves entirely to cleaning up the area for others to enjoy and appreciate, while giving the tree the respect it deserves. This has been a massive effort, involving their own personal equipment, tools, trailers and many countless hours of hard work.
