19.01.2022 Photograph wins art prize Like most of us, I’m always impressed by great photography, no matter who takes it. Lately though, there is a movement to elevate phot...ography to the same level as painting and other forms of art and this was shown recently when a photograph won Best in Show at a Rotary art show. With nearly 500 paintings and a smattering of photographs, an enlarged print got the nod. Every painter worth their salt would not have been happy with this result and its not the first time. The question is, during an art competition/exhibition, should paintings and photographs be judged in the same category? The big art world now throws everything in the mix like sculpture, wall hangings. Glass, video, photography and paintings. All these things are pitted against each other in a very unrealistic competition. The Photographer will argue that photography constitutes their canvas and paint, but does the claim hold up? Consider these points: * There is no handwork or rendering involved in photography * There is no interpretation in Photography it can only record what is there. * There is no original photograph other than a computer file or negative (unless you are using an instamatic). * Although many hours may be used in the set-up, getting the camera settings right or traveling to get the right photo, it all ends in the push of a button. The absurdity of photography standing side-by-side with painting was seen several years ago in a traditional landscape painting prize in Australia. With things taking a more ‘progressive’ leap, the name of the art prize was changed to ‘Interpretation of place’. It then became open to all kinds of art including sculpture, fabric, glass, painting and photography. It was no surprise that a photograph eventually won the first prize with one of the judging panel being a self-proclaimed photographer! It was a sad end for an art prize that was supposed to honour a great landscape artist and the winning photograph was certainly not an interpretation. Art prizes are great, but they fail when all different types of ‘outputs’ are bundled together. They are not the same and cannot fairly be compared. 09.01.2022 The Gallery and MidCoast Stories have won the ‘Conservation of Objects’ award at this year’s National Trust Heritage Awards for the exhibition of the Manning Ho...spital Collection of paintings by Pixie O’Harris and Olaf Harris. Working in partnership with the MidCoast Stories team, Janine Roberts and Penny Teerman, the Gallery in early 2020 hosted the fabulous exhibition The Forgotten Works of Pixie O’Harris and Olaf Harris, curated by Sue Mitchell. The project was made possible with the support of over 60 volunteers including a special conservation team under the expert guidance of Tracey Golds. Congratulations to all involved! The Manning Regional Art Gallery is a service of MidCoast Council and the annual program is support by the NSW Government through Create NSW. 06.01.2022 It's installation day and things are starting to come together. The Underbelly series is now on the wall. This series of paintings was inspired by the many turt...les that I have helped get safely off the road since moving to the Manning valley. Their underbellies all have unique colourings and markings which tell the story of their journey. #nestsweshare #artofkevingriffiths #manningregionalartgallery See more
