25.01.2022 The Paperbark tree is part of the Myrtle family, Myrtaceae. It is Native to New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea and coastal areas of Queensland all the way to Botany Bay in NSW. The grey green leaves are egg shaped and cream or white bottle brush flowers appear from late spring to autumn. This post was produced by K Koch - beautiful flowers.

19.01.2022 Purple is the colour theme of the day with these 2 varieties of lovely flowering plants. The first photos feature Cleome or spider flowers, originally from S. America. They are hardy sun lovers that often self seed, flower prolifically and come in white, pink and lavender. The second plant is called 'Little Boy Blue' and originates from Brazil.

18.01.2022 Along the footpath under this charming flowering jasmine archway are many small footpath tiles. These clay tiles were inspired by Tony Hart, and made by aboriginal school children, who created images of local plants and animals. The children also placed the Gumbaynggir name for each image on their tiles.

18.01.2022 HIPPEASTRUMS.....Spring is in the air with a full display of wonderful trumpet shaped flowers that only bloom for about 3 weeks a year, but is well worth the wait. Originally from South America, you will find this lovely display, presently in full bloom In the Garden.

17.01.2022 Yesterday I wondered across the Botanic Gardens and discovered this amazingly beautiful flowering plant that recently I learnt about as "Ladies Slipper".

17.01.2022 This purple featured plant called LAMIACEAE is part of the mint family, which has more than 7,000 species. It is commonly known as Furry-leafed Dogbane. Along side it is a photo of another lovely purple flower known as Creeping Bellflower.

17.01.2022 Still being constructed is the Botanists Walk leading to the natural rock garden design of native plants. So much love and detail is going into this section of the Garden which is situated right next to the Creek on the way to the Japanese Pavilion and garden.

14.01.2022 BARRY KEMP Life Member of our Friends, after decades of volunteering, is now the Inaugural Winner of the Handbury Award. This Award is made by The Australian Association of Friends of Botanic Gardens, and they gave the following reasons as to why Barry was chosen as their first winner. Barry has made exceptional contribution to North Coast Regional Botanic Garden using his broad experience, volunteering and in the development of collections, it is a pleasure to acknowledge... his dedication. Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 restrictions, the Award could not be presented in person, so our photo (courtesy of E. Colley) shows Barry holding his Certificate.

13.01.2022 Received this email yesterday from Rick our Garden Curator, which is self explanatory. " Hi Eileen, - Bob Southwell sent me these photos of this year’s baby powerful owl, they were taken in early October. This is a good news story for us, as the male turned up last year and the female didn’t. So he has obviously found another girl " Very well camouflaged, so not that easy to pick out, but our thanks to Bob and Rick for the photos and good news.

13.01.2022 For those of you who may not be familiar with our Powerful Owls, this photo, taken by Trevor Harragon in August 2017, shows an adult with dinner. It's a possum! This gives you an idea of their strength and size - about 60cm tall, and means they are well named.

13.01.2022 Our Education Officer, Sue McEntyre, has been working on some DIY craft pack activities, suitable for all ages, to take away from the Botanic Garden. The first one, which is available now (instructions included) costs $5.00 and is a feather head dress.. all items are included to make the head dress .. you just need your own stapler. and maybe some glue. There are fairly limited numbers, so get in quickly to secure yours. Something fun and educational to do in the School Holidays. More activity packs to come, and details will be posted when they are available.

12.01.2022 The Swamp orchid [Phaius australis] is one of the largest of the terrestrial orchids, and one of the most spectacular flowering plants found in NSW. These once common plants, are now only found in scattered areas of fragmented habitat, due to irresponsible collecting by home gardeners.

08.01.2022 The South African garden bed has welcomed spring by coming alive with colourful flowers.

08.01.2022 A favourite with many gardeners, Brunfelsia Pauciflora is a long flowering hardy shrub. Common names are Kiss me Quick, Yesterday-Today-Tomorrow. or Brazil Raintree. A member of the family Solanaceae, the nightshades, it is toxic to dogs - especially the berries and seed pods if eaten. These beautiful shots were taken by Trevor Harragon.

07.01.2022 Carmine Orchid Tree or also know as the Hong Kong orchid tree. The fragrant, orchid like flowers bloom from now until March and give a lovely display of various shades of red and pink.A delightful springtime bloom.

07.01.2022 Spring time in the gardens means the birds get active. Photos show a Satin Bowerbird providing a lesson on how to build a bower using only your beak and a Little Wattlebird is collecting nesting material.

05.01.2022 A must see currently, is the amazing display of Botanic Garden roses, that are in full bloom. After walking through the archway you will behold such a variety of colour, and delightful mixed species.

05.01.2022 The Orchid Society held its Annual Autumn Show in the Display Room at the Garden (24/25 April), and what a spectacular display it was. Here are some of my favourite flowering orchids showing their full beauty.

05.01.2022 The Garden was brimming, with full attendance, for the wonderful Sunday afternoon Beethoven's 250th Birthday Bash. Another fabulous selection of music was performed by the Coffs City Orchestra, including music from Duke Ellington, Leroy Anderson's Typewriter song, and Beethoven's best Symphonies were played. Also offering an exciting performance was the Riverside Band, a fabulous group of mixed brass/wind and percussion players.

04.01.2022 A lovely splash of colour to start the day. VIREYAS, a sub-species of the Rhododendron family prefer well-drained soil with lots of bark or other fibrous material. They also prefer semi-shaded conditions, but the more light they get, the bushier they will be. These beauties were photographed by K. Koch.

03.01.2022 These photos were taken by Trevor Harragon on the same day in 2017. This ancient species is generally quite slow growing, so it would be interesting to see how much they have grown in 3 years. If anybody takes any current photos and posts to this site, it would be good to compare.

03.01.2022 These stunning day lilies (ASPHODELACEAE) are flowering freely at the moment. The Coffs Art Group regularly visits the Garden, trying to capture the beauty of nature. Judy Woods was trying to capture the glorious, vibrant yellows, which formed an attractive theme for her.
