23.01.2022 It’s World Turtle Day! A day that reminds us to celebrate and protect turtles and their habitats. Did you know turtles nest in spring/summer, and a simple set up of trellis and garden pegs makes a great turtle nest protection kit? After rain in the warmer months, keep an eye out for turtles nesting near your dams. Collect your free nest protection kits from us and help save the turtles in your backyard from becoming a fox’s dinner!... Kits available from Winton Wetlands, Chesney Vale, Victoria. 20.01.2022 Fledgling Magpie Season If you see me on the ground, hold tight, my parents are likely to be somewhere around! They may be out collecting my food or cha...sing away predators that are likely to intrude. Please give them time, and wait and see, they're extremely likely to return to me. As my legs wobble, I clumsily plummet to the ground. I’m just learning my bearings of how to get around. An exciting new world for me to see. Out of the nest and free as can be! Although I may not yet be able to fly, please don’t worry as I’m bound to get by. I can usually flutter and jump to higher ground. I can also communicate with my parents by emitting a sound. If you see me in immediate danger, please help and don’t be a stranger! If I’m injured, I need your assistance. Call your local animal rescue shelter to help secure my existence! Please don’t be tempted to take me home, and try to raise me on your own. I require experienced care, and a nutritious diet like my parents would prepare! I know you mean well, and truly thank you for caring. But when it comes to raising me, even my own parents can find it overbearing! If I’m too young and unable to be returned to my nest, (refer to flowchart) here’s something you can try to ensure I progress... Constructing a makeshift nest is easy as can be. Octopus straps, a hanging basket, leaf litter, then securely hang it up in a tree! Make sure you wait until my mum or dad return. If you see a parent attending to me, then there is no reason for further concern. If you’re EVER in doubt, do not fuss. Ring your local wildlife shelter and they’ll be able to help us!

06.01.2022 We may be quiet on the events this year ... But you can still be a Friend to Winton Wetlands during these unusual times we find ourselves in. Here is some suggestions on how to stay involved: Bird Watching... Grab your binoculars and head to your favourite spot (I enjoy the Dam Wall) and record what you see. Using Birdlife's Birdata mobile app you can easily log information and images you have collected. Weeding Choose your favourite area, grab your gloves and go weeding. Leave the weeds in a pile out if sight and they will decompose naturally. Litter Pick Grab a rubbish bag, a pair of gloves and take a walk, collecting litter as you go. Please take the rubbish home with you and dispose of in your rubbish bins. Please remember: Wear Gloves Be careful and stay socially distanced wash your hands after any activity
