22.01.2022 Hey everyone. Next meeting will be on the 9th Feb, 10am - 12pm. We have a few things to do next session - find this elusive shed that we can use and potentially use as a base of operations. Maybe clean it up a bit.... - continue handweeding around bridge in preparation for planting in Autumn and Winter. - Brush cut and clear branches around bridge. Tea and biscuits to follow. I'll be a bit more prepared this time with documentation including some safety protocols to go through. Cheers :)
21.01.2022 We had a great first day pulling out hemlock and thistle, and getting to know the reserve. Thanks everyone for coming
19.01.2022 Hey everyone. At this stage we're free to get back into the reserve and resume our working bees. We may as well get back into the old routine of every second Sunday, so our next meeting will be the the 14th of June. Lots to do and talk about. I think the focus of this meeting will be plenty of food and hot drinks and maybe a start on cleaning up the old friends group shed, as well as anything else that tickles our fancy.... Looking forward to seeing everyone again. Let me know whether you are available or if another day better suits. Cheers, Luke
18.01.2022 Some old school pics of the Friends of Yarra Bridge Reserve from the 90s.
16.01.2022 ...UPDATE... Apologies for the late update after last Sunday's working bee. Another productive session preparing the bridge area for planting in Winter. Asha, Erik and I checked out the on-site shed that we may be able to use. It looks promising so I expect to have a clean up day for that some day soon. ... Updates from Dave from Parks Victoria. He is developing some permanent signage for us to install which will be good, similar to the photo I have attached. He is also going through incorporation of our group which will mean being officially recognised as Parks volunteers and also insurance for the Friends group and a bank account so that we can start applying for grants. Finally, the next friends group will be on the 8th March which is the labour day weekend. Would anyone prefer to move it to the next weekend? Thanks, Luke.
16.01.2022 Hey everyone. Here is a video update on the happenings for the friends group. One of the key next steps for the group will be holding our first annual general meeting for the friends group so that we can vote on whether to start a bank account to apply for grants. We need to decide this as a group and supply the minutes for that decision. Please let me know if it's something you'd like to be a part of and also what things you would potentially like to discuss and I can enter ...those into the agenda. It is somewhat time sensitive as Melb Water grants close at the end of September. If possible I'd like to hold a zoom chat in the next two weeks. Sorry about the video, but thanks for watching. Hope everyone is doing well, hope to hear from you soon. Thanks, Luke.
12.01.2022 Hey everyone. Quick review of our March working bee. Had a good day handweeding and meeting our new members Jed, Gus, and Bec. It was great to meet you guys. Latest message from Parks Victoria was that they would like us to cease our working bees given the coronavirus situation, and the current rules around gatherings. It's hard to say in what capacity we can continue doing things.... There's a lot of potential for us to experiment with own propagation during isolation. Erik and I are currently propagating a bunch of native grasses and shrubs with the intention of planting them in the reserve once all the craziness dies down. I have a lot of forestry tubes i am happy to lend out if you'd like to grow some things yourself. Will keep in touch regarding updates as I get them Hope you are all well. Cheers.
09.01.2022 Great day today. Thanks Ash, Bren, Katherine, Shane, Erik for coming. We got a great list together for propagation and the bridge re-veg area is looking schmick. Photos include some before and afters of the zones we worked in today, and of the previous Yarra Bridge friends group from the 90s, courtesy of our neighbour Kylie. Thanks again, see you on the 09/02 for the next session :)
08.01.2022 Hey everyone. Sorry for the lack of updates recently. Unfortunately the coronavirus restrictions have stopped us from getting together again. Hope everyone is happy and healthy and enjoying their time at home. I have 6 weeks off work like a lot of people and am looking forward to getting down to the reserve as much as possible for my hour of exercise as I'm lucky to live less than 5 kms away. The work we have done, particularly around the bridge is holding up really well. T...his would be the ideal time to plant some of tube stock we have been growing. Hopefully we can all get back there soon. There is a lot of info that I need to share about the friends group and details around incorporation as well as the feedback and info that I get from the Woori Parks Office. I am going to share a video of myself sometime this week talking about as much of that stuff as I can so you all have the same information as me and are kept in the loop as much as possible. Hope everyone is ok. I would love to hear from on the page to see how you're going or if you have questions or whatever. Lots of love, Luke.
08.01.2022 Hey all. Got some new info regarding incorporation of the friends group. Turns out it is something we do ourselves. Katherine, Shane. Asha, Jed, Erik, could you please check out this link when you get a chance. https://www.consumer.vic.gov.au//become-an-incorporated-as... it just details whats involved in the process should we choose to incorporate, as well as our responsibilities i.e. administration requirements, tax, bank accounts etc. Because we can't meet up at the moment I'll message you or chat to you when i see you and get your thoughts so we can decide as a group if we want to pursue incorporation. Talk to you all soon. Cheers, Luke.
08.01.2022 Hey gang. We're on for this Sunday at 10am as usual. Plenty of handwork to do after recent rains but also a lot of natural recruitment of native grasses in our bridge patch which is good. Looking forward to seeing you there. Tea and biscuits to follow. ... Thanks, Luke.
05.01.2022 Greetings. Another meeting this Sunday from 10 - 12. I daresay there won't be any Parks representatives as I think they're all away fire fighting. The plan for this session will involve 3 activities ... - pulling out some big heavy duty weeds around the bridge to clean it up and make it look a bit nicer. - some detailed handweeding of grasses and a tutorial on how to tell the difference between native and foreign grasses. - going around with Erik and getting a plant list together so we can start propagating to plant at a later date. Coffee/tea to follow. Hope to see you there. Please let me know if you're coming, but as always no pressure. :)
03.01.2022 Hey everyone. We've decided to have the next friends group meeting on the 15th March, which will be the third Sunday of the month. Bit too tricky over labour day weekend with people away and busy with other things. Will update in the upcoming weeks on details and objectives for the session. See you next week ... Cheers, Luke.
