24.01.2022 Event reminder! An ancient Greek poem referred to peonies as the Queen of all herbs and the ancient Chinese considered the tree peony to be the ‘King of flowers. It seems we all agree that peonies are outrageously stunning in bloom. With their delicate layers and ultra-feminine blooms, this is one plant that is truly a beauty to have in the garden or a vase. In Australia, peonies are only available in November, which makes the flowers even more coveted. Jill Holmes-Smi...th, owner of The Red Hill Peony Estate, talks to us about peonies and plantings, her work illustrates this beautiful flower and so much more. Join us this Wednesday 14th October at 10 AM https://www.rbgfriendsmelbourne.org/whats-on/

23.01.2022 ONLINE EVENT TOMORROW Botanising in Yunnan, China and Tibet with Diana Barrie The western province of Yunnan, China has been boastfully and aptly described as having as much flowering plant diversity as the rest of the Northern Hemisphere put together. It’s also the province that features our beloved Camellia reticulata as its’ emblem. Two good reasons why Diana Barrie visited Yunnan province in China, and then onto Tibet where the landscapes appear arid yet have wonderf...ul plants. Join Diana as she takes us on a visual treat to show this part of the Himalaya range, with diverse landscapes formed by rivers and climate and which sustains an extraordinary biodiversity, with alpine flora found nowhere else in the world. To book for this online event tomorrow (2 December) at 2pm, visit https://www.rbgfriendsmelbourne.org/whats-on/ Bookings close midnight 1 December. 22.01.2022 Whilst Melbourne was in lockdown, many of our members tended their gardens and if you are walking around your neighbourhood, you have probably noticed just how fabulous everyone's gardens are enjoying the extra TLC. One of our wonderful volunteers, Wendy, from the Growing Friends, has shared with us an article about Grevilleas highlighting some special species in her garden. Thanks Wendy for sharing. The Grevillea is a diverse genus of about 360 species. Several Greville...a have raceme which is flat on one side with small flowers with protruding styles on the other sometimes known as toothbrush Grevillea. There is also a collection of Grevillea which have holly shaped leaves of various forms. Two of the grevillea in my garden have both these characteristics and both are endemic to very small areas. G. bedggoodiana is commonly known as the Enfield Grevillea. It can be either prostrate or procumbent growing to less than 0.5m in height. The buds of the flowers are initially citrus green and as the florets open gradually become deep pink. G. wilkinsonii (the Tumut Grevillea) was first discovered in 1991 and occurs in only two locations near Gundagai and the Goobarragandra River. This plant is a spreading shrub that can grow to 2.5m X 2m, although it is usually smaller. The buds of the flowers are initially cream, opening up to be deep pink to mauve. These plants are classified as threatened or vulnerable and each is being protected and developed under a Protection Plan. Thank you Wendy for the images of both Tumut Grevillea (top) and Enfield Grevillea (bottom) growing in your garden. The colours of these flowers are gorgeous! See more

15.01.2022 November Plant of the Month Rosa chinensis ‘Mutabilis’ Also known as Rosa x odorata ‘Mutabilis’, it is thought this rose was introduced to horticulture in 1934 by Swiss Botanist, Henri Correvon of Geneva, who obtained it from Prince Ghilberto Borromeo’s garden at Isola Bella , Northern Italy of unknown breeder, pre 1894. The name ‘Mutabilis’ meaning changeable or inconstant indicates the nature of the flower through its lifecycle. The single flowers open a coppery yellow tra...nsitioning through coppery pink, watermelon and finally a rich mahogany. The shrub blooms constantly Spring and Summer and has the appearance that butterflies are fluttering all over the shrub hence, a common name for this plant is the butterfly rose. It normally makes a large, spreading bush 1.2 m - 3 m high with a width of 0.9 m 1.8 m and has very few thorns. Highly recommended as a thick rose hedge which creates a great habitat for small birds. Likes a fertile, moist and well rained sunny position but is very adaptable to soil types and will tolerate some shade. This rose needs only a light pruning and requires no deadheading.
