25.01.2022 To most 343 is just a number. To nearly all firefighters around the world, it is a humbling reminder of the events that took place in New York on this day, 19 y...ears ago. This is because on 9/11, 343 New York City Fire Department (FDNY) firefighters did not finish their shift. The tragedy claimed the lives of 2977 innocent victims, and many continue to be impacted. To date, 227 additional firefighters have died with illnesses related to 9/11, with 27 names recently added to the FDNY World Trade Centre Memorial Wall. FRNSW shares deep and personal connections with FDNY, we will never forget the immediate and ongoing loss they were dealt and continue to deal with, all those affected are in our thoughts today. 17.01.2022 Whether you're in the "Northern or Southern Zone", we'll weather the storm together.

17.01.2022 As the COVID-19 pandemic changes the way we go about our lives, our firefighters and support staff continue to ensure we remain prepared for anything. You may see our firefighters wearing a mask, we'd appreciate it if you could also wear yours if we visit your home or workplace.

17.01.2022 Are you one of the many Australians that loves to go for long drives with your feet on the dash?? Well this video is for you! Every year, passengers sustain un...necessary injuries from travelling like this. Their legs are forced back at awkward angles into their face and chest in a matter of milliseconds. Please, watch this video and remind your family and friends about the importance of keeping your feet off the dash. See more

15.01.2022 2020 has been a huge year which began with devastating fires and then went into a COVID driven recession. We know that all too many people have lost family memb...ers, some have lost their jobs and some have suffered various levels of mental health issues including anxiety and depression. During this time, the advice from health professionals and government directives, indicated that the 2020 400in4 Charity Ride would not go ahead. While the adversity continues to plague many communities around Australia, the demands placed on the Burns Unit at The Children's Hospital at Westmead has not diminished. If anything, it has increased. It is for these reasons that we are so grateful that we were able to run a modified version of our 4 day event and that we were able to raise a staggering $113,000 that has already been donated to the Burns Unit. The giving nature of so many people has enabled us to be a conduit between the needs of the Patients, Nurses and Doctors of the Burns Unit and the supply of additional funds that they require to provide the very best care that they can. We can't do any of this without the support of you and also our sponsors. Thank you to the following for their continued support! 07.01.2022 WHY WE TRAIN AND KEEP FIT. When a firefighter attends an incident involving a fire in a structure, they must wear appropriate Personal Protective clothing (PPC)... to protect themselves from heat, water (steam), smoke and other hazards. The PPC ensemble includes helmet, coat, pants, boots, flash hood and gloves. Our PPC also helps identifies us to the general public and other services who we are. In conjunction with the PPC, a variety of tools are needed to carry out the task. Such tools are radios for communication, Thermal imaging camera (TIC) to aid with visibility to see through the smoke and darkness, entry tools such as the Halligan and sledge axe to forcibly open doors or windows. Self-contained air breathing apparatus (SCABA) to help with breathing in hot toxic environments, and a quick attack bag which has a hose, branch, adaptors and spanners located in it. The photo below shows a firefighter wearing the PPC and equipment required. The equipment in total weights 25kg and the PPC up to 10-12kg. With this extra weight, add high heat, near to no visibility, climbing, crawling, dragging hoses, loud noises and explosions, working for prolonged periods and in unfamiliar environments..THIS IS WHY FIREFIGHTERS NEED TO KEEP FIT.

01.01.2022 The annual Fitness Drill is back up and running - providing our operationally deployable staff with a tool to help them remain fit, healthy and prepared for any...thing. The Fitness Drill provides a protocol to self-benchmark their fitness. It enables them to assess their current fitness level and take ownership of maintaining their fitness by understanding physical capability as it relates to their role as a firefighter. This is a mandatory drill to be completed each calendar year. Here we see our Fire Safety staff taking their Fitness seriously and completing their drill- well done team! See more
