20.01.2022 FRNSW, NSW Rural Fire Service and NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service are undertaking a number of planned hazard reduction burns today around the Greater Sy...dney Region. These are important controlled burns which will reduce the risk to people and properties from bush fires. Taking advantage of optimal weather conditions, planned burns will be conducted in the following areas: - Huskisson and Narrawallee, Shoalhaven Region - Horsely, Wollongong - St Helens Park, Campbelltown - Barden Ridge, Sutherland Shire - Katoomba, The Blue Mountains - Glenorie, Maraylya and Lower Portland, The Hills Shire - Smiths Lake, Mid North Coast With the volume of hazard reduction burns being undertaken today, it is possible smoke will settle across the Greater Sydney Area, however, a southerly change and rain on Wednesday will begin to clear the smoke. NSW Health reminds people that children, older adults and people with heart and lung conditions are most susceptible to the effects of air pollution and excessive smoke. Residents in impacted areas are advised to take the following precautions: - Ensure windows and doors are closed to help prevent smoke entering their homes. - Keep outdoor furniture under cover to prevent ember burns. - Retract pool covers to prevent ember damage. - Remove washing from clotheslines. - Ensure pets have a protected area. - Vehicles must slow down, keep windows up, turn headlights on. - Sightseers must keep away from burns for their own safety. - People with asthma or lung conditions are advised to reduce outdoor activities. If smoke levels are high and if shortness of breath or coughing develops, take your reliever medicine or seek medical advice. If you spot a fire that is unattended, please call Triple Zero (000). #PreparedForAnything #FRNSW

07.01.2022 "Where there is smoke there is fire" Firefighters are required to work in environments that are filled with smoke, toxic gasses and a lack of oxygen. To survive... in such conditions firefighters wear breathing apparatus to ensure their protection. The most visible by-product of fire is smoke and a toxic atmosphere, which is less visible is also a major concern for firefighters. Great developments over the last 100 years mean that today’s breathing apparatus protects our firefighters from unknown respiratory hazards, elevated temperatures, depleted oxygen levels, toxic atmospheres and smoke. Breathing apparatus allows firefighters to work in conditions where it would be otherwise impossible to breath. This week's Museum blog focuses upon this development. To read the full story follow this link: https://www.museumoffire.net/blog-1 Linking in with this week's blog is the photo our team selected as our #FlashbackFriday for today. This photograph was taken at Headquarters Fire Station in 1905. As you can see from this photograph breathing apparatus has come a very long way over the last 100 years! 04.01.2022 Today Commissioner Baxter joined Commissioner Rogers and the NSW Rural Fire Service to mark the start of the 2020/21 Bush Fire Danger Period. Commissioner Baxte...r urged the NSW community to begin preparing their home as we head into the summer months and to consider the risk of bush fires when traveling around the State. As we move into summer and the holiday period, and especially given the travel restrictions with COVID-19, many people will be visiting bush fire prone areas. While they might not typically live in an at risk area, it’s important they have a plan for the area they are visiting."
