23.01.2022 Forestville Hazmat crew attended reports of a container washed up on Turimetta Beach. It is likely it washed down from the Hawkesbury River with some flood wate...r in side. But as a precaution, hazmat technicians in protective clothing pumped the container out into smaller containers provided by Council’s environmental team. Fire and Rescue NSW Station 006 Mona Vale crew assisted with some heavy lifting to carry the drums off the beach If you find anything unusual washed up on a beach, stay away from it and report it. The Roads and Maritime Service is responsible for much of the NSW coastline. They are assisted by Councils, EPA, FRNSW, Surf Life Saving, SES and other agencies working hard together to keep our beaches safe Fire and Rescue NSW Fire and Rescue NSW Lower North Shore and Northern Beaches Command ME2 The Manly Daily Nadine Morton - Journalist Manly Observer Northern Beaches Advocate #fireandrescuensw #frnsw #fireandrescue #hazmat #morethanfire #PreparedForAnything

20.01.2022 The name for the Academy Tower is now official! The streetscape around the Academy’s practical learning environment continues to develop, all designed to duplic...ate what fire crews would find in a normal urban environment. The centrepiece of the PLE is the tower, a 5-storey state-of-the-art structure. The tower is now officially been given with the name Jirrabity Tower. But why Jirrabity? How did we come up with the name? The Academy Operations Team came up with the idea of using an Indigenous name and contacted the Diversity and Inclusion unit, who endorsed the concept. A small network of Indigenous firefighters were contacted and set about researching and nominating names. Former Instructor Leading Firefighter Shane Kennedy was part of that group I remembered that a brown snake had been seen in front of the ESA before opening day in 2018, so I researched the traditional dialect and found that the local Dharug word for snake is jirrabity. The name was then referred to the Academy Steering Committee and was widely endorsed. Qualified Firefighter Jasmine Sarin, a successful Indigenous artist, was approached to design the artwork that would adorn the tower. Firefighter Sarin had previously designed the motifs that adorn the City of Sydney Runner, and within days the artwork was finalised. Academy Operations has now affixed the name and the artwork to the walls and doors of the tower, where it can be seen from a distance. The ESA is proud to have the name Jirrabity associated with the practical learning environment developed, designed and implemented through our diversity network!
19.01.2022 MT DRUITT | Fire and Rescue NSW crews from Fire and Rescue NSW Station 078 Ropes Crossing and Fire and Rescue NSW Station 077 St Marys were called to a home on ...Methven Street, Mt Druitt at approximately 9am this morning after a Triple Zero (000) call reported smoke billowing from the homes garage. Occupants were directed to evacuate the house and crews arrived to find the garage well alight. Crews worked quickly to control the blaze, and the fire was contained to the garage, which was completely destroyed. Fire Investigators determined the cause of the fire was a hoverboard on charge that caught fire. A male was treated at the scene and transported to hospital by NSW Ambulance. This incident serves as a reminder to ensure hoverboards comply with safety standards outlined by the ACCC. Defective hoverboards have been the cause of a number of house fires. 16.01.2022 This weeks #FlashbackFriday isnt from that long ago but it required over 100 Fire and Rescue NSW firefighters to attend and it lasted for 6 days. This story w...as published in the Fire and Rescue NSW Station 241 Bulli history book last year. At 3:10am on Monday 18 June 2018 fire broke out onboard the Australian-flagged bulk carrier, Iron Chieftan. The ship, measuring 202m and weighing 50,000 tonnes was docked at Port Kembla and was in the process of unloading its 34,000-tonne dolomite (a mineral used in the manufacture of steel) cargo when the fire began. The fire began aft of the ships cargo hold in a vertical discharge riser before spreading to the discharge boom and conveyor system used to offload the cargo. The ships 22-member crew were evacuated without injury while carbon monoxide was discharged into the ships engine room to protect it. FRNSW crews attacked the fire on the main deck and discharge boom from the wharf using aerial appliances. This part of the fire was extinguished by Monday afternoon, however due to certain areas of the fire being difficult to access the fire continued for several days. Around 100 firefighters were involved in firefighting efforts while tugboats applied water to the hull to keep the fuel tanks cool. On Wednesday 20 June the final hold where the fire continued to burn was flooded with expansion foam and on Sunday 24 June the fire was confirmed to be finally extinguished. It was exactly two years ago this week that this incident occurred. Museum of Fire Collection
16.01.2022 NATIONAL SCIENCE WEEK | Did you know there is a science behind how we solve fire mysteries? Our Fire Investigation and Research Unit investigators have an inte...resting and unusual job. They observe, gather evidence and test different hypotheses to find out the origin and cause of fires. We even use dogs with a knack for sniffing out liquid fire accelerants. This work supports faulty product recalls, provides crucial information for police investigations, and also helps us identify new fire risks, so we can help keep you safe.
