25.01.2022 We have our very own Reno Racer in Bathurst, Who knows Him?

25.01.2022 Helen Richey, born on November 21, 1909, was a self-proclaimed tomboy who preferred mechanical toys to dolls. She gravitated toward aviation and became a pilot ...at the age of 20 in 1930 going on to become the first woman pilot for an airline (Central Airlines, later part of United) making her first such flight in a Ford Tri-Motor on December 31, 1934. Although she was very well qualified, the airline used her primarily for publicity. Eventually she was forced to leave that job due to the efforts of the all-male pilots union. . She set an international altitude record for light planes, served as a co-pilot for Amelia Earhart in the 1935 Bendix Trophy Race (a transcontinental air race),was the first woman pilot to fly air mail and was one of the first woman flight instructors. . During World War 2, she flew as a ferry pilot for the British Air Transportation Authority ferrying bombers reaching the rank of major. Following the war, however, she was unable to find aviation employment in that era where the industry was dominated by male pilots. . Eventually, in 1947, despondent and with her savings depleted, she died from an overdose of sleeping pills (that was ruled a suicide). . There are two biographies of Richey: - "Propeller Annie: The story of Helen Richey . . ." by Glenn Kerfoot - "Fatal Friendship: The Death of Helen Richey . . ." by Andrea Niapas and David K. Bowman . [Thanks to David Galbraith who suggested (back in late July) that Helen's accomplishments would make an interesting post.] http://www.mckeesportheritage.org/helen_richey http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helen_Richey https://www.facebook.com/dr.d.a.galbraith/posts/10152198610360248 http://www.women-in-aviation.com/cgi-bin/links/detail.cgi See more

20.01.2022 "The moment of launch during an early aircraft trial conducted on board HMAS Australia The last year of the war also saw Australia used for aircraft experimen...ts. On 8 March 1918, and again on 14 May, a Sopwith 1 Strutter was successfully launched from a platform erected on one of her 12-inch gun turrets. These were the first ever launchings of a two-seater aircraft from a battle cruiser. By the end of the war nearly every British capital ship carried a Strutter for reconnaissance and a Sopwith Pup or Sopwith Camel as a fighter." diane.admin See more

13.01.2022 On 5 May 1953, Squadron Commander Christopher Draper DSC, English World War I flying ace, nicknamed "the Mad Major. , was fed up with the government's treatmen...t of veterans. In a show of protest, The Mad Major preceded to fly an Auster monoplane under 15 of the 18 Thames bridges in London. The bridge arches averaged 40 to 50 feet high; with ships providing additional obstacles. Draper was arrested after landing, charged, and fined. He retained his pilots licence. "I did it for the publicity," Draper told the press; "For 14 months I have been out of a job, and I'm broke. I wanted to prove that I am still fit, useful and worth employing....They tell me I can be jailed, possibly for six months.....It was my last-ever flight- I meant it as a spectacular swansong.
