25.01.2022 Welcome to my little corner of the internet. I'm Alison, self appointed boss of The Ashers. At least that's what they let me think. I started this blog because I wanted something to be really in charge of. I used to be in control of all manner of things, then I got married and had two kids, and that all changed. In particular I had a kid with a 'thing', a health condition, and I found that so many things can't be plotted or measured or organised, yet everyone still expects... dinner on time. What I do know, is that over the past ten years, my heart has opened in more ways that I would ever have imagined. My sharp edges have softened, my breath has become deeper, and my eyes see the world in a brand new ways. I am stronger than I thought I was, yet I still can't send a meal back at a restaurant if it's shit. So here I am: Alison, writer of stories that will open your heart, connect us together, and leave you a little changed and a lot lighter. Read, enjoy and share the magic around.

23.01.2022 Dusty Magnums You know I do go on about looking after yourself, and I don’t necessarily mean day spas and long walks along the beach (although feel free: you do you, Boo), but to dig a little deeper and to connect in with something that is inherent within all of us: to create. Being creative can take on many forms- it can be anything from setting up a nice little space in the corner of a room that pleases your eye, through to writing your Magnum Opus. ...Continue reading

19.01.2022 I have a legendary friend who does this. I might need to write a blog about her. She rocks. She’s so modest she prolly won’t even think this blog is about her.

18.01.2022 So Fiona is over giving the blog a makeover, and adding some bits, making it pretty and shit.. She’s bringing back the blog roll (no, not BOG roll) so you can see who else I love to read, as well as links to cool businesses I want to support. Best of all, she’s adding a premium area where you can subscribe to get one SPESH blog per week (for your eyes only- it’s all locked and secret). ... I’m very excited. Stay tuned...

15.01.2022 The Wednesday Blog. Cheers.

12.01.2022 Some days I’m on for a chat- okay, let’s face it- it’s most days.. And some days I’m not. But no matter what, when I head down to the river for some quietude, I seem to always end up with a buddy. And they are CHATTERS. ... It could be Reg who’s moved up from country Victoria since bloody Rona because no bugger is gunna lock me indide, I’m a farmer! or Ken who has a million cool stories about New Farm during the war years, and how he’s now retired to the shack (probs a 3mil shack if the location he gestures to is accurate). Ken comes to the river whilst his wife does the shopping. Perhaps Mrs.Ken also needs some quiet. I usually have some work I want to do, it’s sitting there patiently cradled within my laptop or my phone or a book, but that doesn’t make much difference to these fellas. Maybe such trinkets of the modern world are invisible to them? Or maybe they didn’t give a shit. They want a monologue with a stranger, and by golly they shall have it. The old man’s version of a one night stand. But instead of alley-ways and furtive groping we have the open river in front of us and the wind at our backs, and now there is no rush. The chats of Bill and Fred and Bob meander through the years- some of the memories are sepia and I can’t quite tell if they are real or embellished, well polished over the years in the re-telling, so the details are buffed. The hard edges are smooth. Today I did not want Ken or Reg or even Frank (I haven’t come across him yet, but I know he’s there, ready with an anecdote about what the Royal Mail used to look like, or what it felt like to brush the curve of a woman’s hip after all of those nights in a sticky jungle. Spoiler alert: it felt terrifying and strange and like coming home.) Today I wanted to be alone in MY sepia. I’m nearing fifty, so I think I am allowed a moment. Today I took some measures, which I shall now share with you, lest you too want a moment of solitude. 1. Get your water bottle. 2. Get one of the brown paper lunch bags that you use for school lunches. 3. Place bottle in bag. 4. Sip. Frequently. Unfortunately, the frequent sipping may mean your almost fifty year old bladder may need a small restroom visit, but your peace is guaranteed. Apologies to Reg and the others. But some days I just can’t. Some days I just want to drink out of my brown bag and think my own thinks.
