18.01.2022 Canberra to Eden rail not feasible Months after the intended due date, the NSW State Government has released the findings of the $1 million Canberra to Eden ra...ilway feasibility study, which claims the project is not viable from a cost/benefit perspective. The Executive Summary states: There would be little if any return on investment. Project benefits are derived primarily from the freight and passenger demands that can be attracted to the corridor and directed to the Port of Eden. Even on the most optimistic demand assumptions with significant freight diverted from other NSW ports the demand projections for the full project, from Canberra Airport to Port of Eden, only generate benefits of $225.8m over the life of the project, compared against a cost to achieve this benefit of $5,447.6m. The proposed railway is over 300 kilometres long... To read more, purchase a copy of The Monaro Post or subscribe online now at https://themonaropost.partica.online/

17.01.2022 Making the most of the improved weather, I set out from Everton and made my way to Myrtleford via the rail-trail. As to be expected, it was quite flat early on but a great surface to enjoy the picturesque surrounds, in particular that of Mt Buffalo from distance. Heading out of Myrtleford, my route selection was being questioned with little shoulder being offered on the road to Yackandandah. Pleased to turn left and head towards Stanley, I commenced the first major climb of t...he day up through the Mt Stanley Forest. Having done it twice before, I knew what lay ahead and despite a 2.8km stretch, known to Strava geeks as 'The Legbreaker', was able to spin up it comfortably. Past the orchards of Old Stanley, I turned onto circular creek road for a rocky descent, before commencing the ascent to the top of Mt Stanley. Upon turning onto Mt Stanley Rd, it came as little surprise to see it was very much a 4WD track. Unperterbed knowing I was less than 3km from the Summit, I grinded on and thankfully, as you may agree based on the images, it was worth my while. Snow capped peaks at distance, reflective of the chilly blast from the previous week. A rough and rugged descent down the mount, into Beechworth and back to base via the Beechworth Rail-Trail. Ride High Country Enjoy the video of the adventure that was! R.Rus

17.01.2022 Greetings Medieval fans, family and friends. I bring sad news; our 2020 Sheffield Tasmania Medieval festival has been cancelled as we cannot deliver a safe or v...iable medieval festival under the current restrictions and allowed numbers placed upon us along with no jousters or birds of prey this year ex melbourne and sydney and many other attractions very doubtful. We will work hard to secure a larger and more exciting Sheffield Medieval festival for 2021. Cheers Ned. See more

04.01.2022 Eddie Gilbert - was the only bowler to knock the bat out of Sir Donald Bradman’s hands and to have bowled him for a duck in 1931. He played 23 matches for Queen...sland in the 1930s during which he took 87 wickets at an average of 29. He is a member of Queensland’s Indigenous Hall of Fame. A statue in his honour has been erected at Brisbane’s Allan Border Field and a headstone marks his grave in Cherbourg, QLD, his home town. Bradman recalled years later that the six deliveries he faced from Gilbert in that match (On 6 November 1931 in a match against NSW at the recently opened Brisbane Cricket Ground), were the fastest he had experienced in his career. Bradman said The keeper took the ball over his head, and I reckon it was halfway to the boundary and that the balls from Gilbert were unhesitatingly faster than anything seen from Larwood or anyone else.
