22.01.2022 So much talk in the media this week about farmers only employing backpackers for harvest work and not giving locals a chance. The term backpacker has almos...t been used as if these people are invaders from another planet. At Lowdina we employ Tasmanians, Australians, French, German, Canadian, Chinese, Korean, Indian, Nepalese, Taiwanese, Argentinian, Chilean and the list goes on. They are all people. Just people. Human beings with a desire to earn money. To feed and house themselves and their families. They don’t need to be treated with disdain by other people who decide that their own need is somehow greater. All these people bring diversity and spirit to our Orchard. Our fruit is picked and packed by people who have chosen to do it and they understand that great effort equals great rewards. Forcing people to work for their benefits will not enhance our fruit in any way. The flavour of discontentment is not desired. See more

The inquiry, initiated by the Treasurer Josh Frydenberg and the Agriculture Minister David Littleproud, will look at trading practices throughout supply chains, and the relationships between farmers, processors and retailers. APAL has been invited to make a submission into the inquiry growers are welcome to contribute and should contact Jeremy Griffith on [email protected] to make a comment. https://bit.ly/2ZjocmA

21.01.2022 Did you know that the exotic pest Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB) is a serious threat to Tasmanian agriculture due to the damage it could cause to vegetable c...rops, fruit and ornamental trees? BMSB can also be a nuisance pest for humans due to its habit of seeking shelter in large numbers in houses, factories and machinery over winter. Fortunately, BMSB isn’t present in Australia, however the high-risk season for BMSB is September to April, when it may be found hitchhiking in containerised cargo and on vessels from countries such as Italy and the USA. We can all help protect our country and our State from exotic pests by looking out for hitchhikers, like BMSB, in imported products SEE IT. SECURE IT. REPORT IT. Find out more about BMSB at: https://www.outbreak.gov.au/curr/brown-marmorated-stink-bug

18.01.2022 "Uni students get a reasonable amount of holidays, but we need an incentive to bring our best and brightest into the regions during times when we need people to... help with picking." The NT Farmers Association is proposing a new idea to get uni students into farm work, where students would receive a discount off their HECS debt. What do you think? 17.01.2022 Tasmania is moving towards an easing of border restrictions on October 26. With this in mind, now is the best time to check in with yourself and others in your ...household that you’re doing all that you can to stay ‘COVID-safe.’ Practise COVID-safe behaviours such as regular hand washing and sanitising, physical distancing, staying at home when sick, covering coughs and sneezes and getting tested when symptoms are present. Every measure we take now will help us keep on top of COVID. This will be important when the movement of people in and out of our state increases. Remember, you can stay up to date with the latest COVID-19 info via this website: www.coronavirus.tas.gov.au

14.01.2022 Today is National Threatened Species Day! Ordinarily our biosecurity resources are used to keep pests and diseases out of Australia, however there is important ...work being undertaken to help stop the illegal trade of threatened species. We’re investing in smarter ways of screening for wildlife to keep pace with increases in volumes of trade, especially in the pathways favoured by wildlife smugglers. The Illegal Wildlife X-ray Algorithm Project will use cutting edge technologies to improve the detection of illegally traded animals. This could mean bringing exotic animals into Australia, or taking our native species out of Australia for trade on the international market. We’re partnering with Taronga Zoo Sydney and Rapiscan Systems to bring together expertise in animal conservation, zoology, veterinary medicine, imaging and computer science. This is funded by the Biosecurity Innovation Program and the Environmental Biosecurity Project Fund. It is a significant step towards reducing wildlife trafficking and the biosecurity risks associated with illegal wildlife through the borders in Australia and New Zealand. 14.01.2022 The Tasmanian Government and our local fruit and berry producers are relying on members of the Tasmanian community to help us fill thousands of work opportunities this harvest season. Find out more through the Government's fantastic Tassie Harvest Jobs campaign!

13.01.2022 Maintaining strong bilateral relationships to support agricultural trade is a priority and during these challenging times requires new approaches. Thailand is a...n important and expanding trading partner, with two-way trade in agriculture, fisheries and forestry products worth $2.5 billion in 2019-20. This trade is supported by a strong partnership and long history of cooperation with our Thai counterparts, underpinned by annual agriculture meetings. Recently we concluded the 2020 bilateral meetings held by videoconference for the first time due to COVID-19 travel restrictions. We shared the impact and challenges of COVID-19 for our agriculture sectors and supply chains, and how our governments have responded. While the platform for our bilateral meeting was new, the focus remained on progressing market access issues for both countries. There was a productive discussion on the next steps to progress our highest priority market access requests: cooked duck meat for Thailand and avocados for Australia. As well, we shared information on a range of topics to build understanding and enhance trade including: - How Thailand manages pesticide residues in imported agricultural commodities. - Thailand’s potential interest in exporting insects for human consumption. - The implementation of emergency measures to protect our biosecurity status with regards to khapra beetle. - Updates on our review of prawn import conditions, which is of keen interest to Thailand, given their substantial prawn exports to Australia. - Opportunities to cooperate on e-certification. We reiterated the benefits of ongoing bilateral and regional cooperation activities to strengthen our relationship and facilitate trade, and hope the next round of meetings in 2021 can be held face to face.

13.01.2022 Tasmania is Queensland fruit fly free please help us keep it that way! Spring and summer are the peak times for fruit fly activity on mainland Australia and a... time of increased risk for Tasmania. While Biosecurity Tasmania has strict controls in place aimed at preventing fruit fly from getting into Tasmania, we ask everybody to remain vigilant for any signs of fruit fly. Fruit fly larvae look similar to blowfly maggots and could be found in fruit that you bought from the supermarket or from fruit in your backyard. If you see something suspect and are not sure, please report it to Biosecurity Tasmania on 03 6165 3777. Please do not dispose of any fruit that has larvae you think might be fruit fly. Instead place the fruit in a plastic bag or plastic container and put it in your fridge until a Biosecurity Tasmania officer can collect it. For more information on Queensland fruit fly visit the Biosecurity Tasmania website at: www.dpipwe.tas.gov.au/fruitfly

12.01.2022 *update* - as of 6th of Nov NSW is now also considered low risk. Tasmania’s border restrictions have changed. When travelling to Tasmania, the conditions that... apply to you depend on where you have spent time prior to arriving. All areas outside of Tasmania are now assessed as either low, medium or high risk. Remember that even if you can enter Tasmania without quarantine, you still need to take precautions and practise COVID-safe behaviours. If at any time after you arrive in Tasmania you develop symptoms, you will need to get tested and isolate until you get the results. Find out more about travel at: www.coronavirus.tas.gov.au/travellers-an/coming-to-tasmania

09.01.2022 There has been an increasing concern about the lack of seasonal workers available to fill the labour requirements over the upcoming summer period in Tasmania.
