02.01.2022 Supermarkets giant, Woolworths, is upping its presence in the $18 billion food distribution and services market. The company has agreed to buy a 65% stake in family-owned PFD Food Services, in a landmark transaction for chief executive Brad Banducci. PFD Food Services is understood to have close to $2 billion a year revenue. CEO, Rick Smith, started working at PFD as a driver in 1959 and bought out the Liberman family's stake in 1988, is the executive chairman.... Woolworths' acquisition comes only months after the pair entered a partnership that enabled the retailer's business-to-business customers, which include childcare centres and nursing homes, to order from PFD's product range through Woolworths' website. The deal helped Woolworths overcome stock shortages triggered by panic buying and enabled PFD to find homes for millions of dollars of stock. It's a chunky acquisition for Woolworths and comes at a relatively quiet time in M&A more generally.
