25.01.2022 This months FTMA Tech Talk is written by Satya Shah of Multinail and focuses on the issue of Lateral Restraints in Pre-Fab Timber Roof Trusses - Design vs Installation! "A truss is a very efficient structural member which consists of a group of ties and struts connected to form a structure that acts as a large span beam. The design of the truss is based on a basic principle of force triangulation in a plane resulting in the truss members undergoing axial forces, either ten...sion or compression. The top chords of the trusses undergo compression, due to downward dead, live and service loads, whereas for the wind uplift load cases the bottom chord effectively undergo compression. Similarly, the webs undergo tension or compression depending on downward forces or wind uplift. To read more, we encourage you to download and file the twenty-sixth edition of FTMA Tech Talk.

24.01.2022 FTMA Australia offers members free advertising for second hand machinery. To date we have sold over $2million for members with absolutely zero commission. Craig Ferguson of Gold Coast Timbers, who closed the business in May, rang to say that they have sold absolutely everything thanks to FTMA Australia advertising their goods in FTMA News. This month, the Greenfields Banner Mitre 10 site is closing as part of their businesses consolidation and as a result they have great machinery for sale which has just been posted.
23.01.2022 FTMA Australia is continuing to work with the experts at Industry Edge such as Tim Woods who we engaged to provide another housing update for our members and in this month's report, Tim focuses on the rumours of a timber shortage. We usually provide these reports just to FTMA Members, however, in the current circumstances we are happy to share wider as it is important that we are all on the same page. Tim starts off by stating that "Australia does not face a shortage in sawn... timber in coming months, or anytime in the near future. This is why. A rumour will get around the world before the truth gets up in the morning. This is all the more the case in the internet age, but that doesn’t make the rumour more likely to be true. IndustryEdge has been asked repeatedly in recent weeks about the stories of a timber shortage and how fabricators, builders and others can address that. It is important to address these matters head on
23.01.2022 We welcome you to read the latest edition of FTMA News which has all the latest information on housing market, timber supply and the South Australian shut down plus lots more industry news. Happy reading.

22.01.2022 Mental Health, Team Building, Workplace Culture it can be the little things by Sam Rowe of Hundegger. Sam says "I have participated in many different team building initiatives in the past golf days, myriad dinners, social BBQ’s, go-karts etc. They can all go part of the way to building a team culture. Recently, I have also participated in a few video webinars about Mental Health in the workplace, including FTMA organised events. The statistics are sobering. I am certainly no mental health expert and have had my own share of challenges over the years in this area, but life is like that and only the naive would expect everything to be good all the time. None of us are untouched by mental health challenges. A fantastic overview of the simple steps taken by Sam and his team during COVID-19 and definitely worthy of a read.
22.01.2022 Every day, fabricators are operating in the middle of a supply chain that builds the nation’s houses. Your role is significant. You might frame as many as 120,000 houses and townhouses each year. We are pretty sure you are the largest users of sawnwood in Australia. We suspect that you provide more wood products to home builders than any other sector in the wood products supply chain. The reason we say ‘might’, ‘pretty sure’ and ‘suspect’ is because as a whole, the sector doe...sn’t have its own data, that is typically consistent with such a significant sector of the housing supply chain. It is true that every fabricator knows how much wood they buy, what average price they are paying and how their orders look, compared with last month and last year. But are they using more wood than average? Are they paying more or less than other fabricators? How’s the order book, compared with the average? To find these things out and a bit more besides the FTMA is working with IndustryEdge to establish an ongoing, confidential and voluntary survey of members, to provide up to date information that can help you navigate your business environment. If you are a fabricator and interested in learning more about this project please contact us.
20.01.2022 Ancient fasteners in Modern Times is a fantastic article by Bronze Sponsor Daw Trading which is an interesting read on the history of fasteners. "An object that is so small, but also used en masse in every space that we inhabit yet, often it is something that is hidden in plain sight. These now small and obscure objects were once not so small and not so obscure. The idea of a mechanical fastener, one that joined two or more materials, is one where little has changed in the idea itself. Instead, our technology and knowledge today have led to advancements within fasteners."

13.01.2022 It has never been more important to look at employing trainees for your business. Not only do you receive great training subsidies, but there are also wage subsidies for your business if you employ younger people. The frame and truss sector is lucky to have two amazing RTO's and one GTO that covers our industry. David, June, Alicia and the team from TABMA Australia along with Rob Rule and the team Timber Training Creswick Ltd. are ready and willing to help fabricators take... on trainees and build skills within the sector. FTMA Australia has created the attached fact sheet that provides contact links for apprenticeship centres, the training subsidies, the qualifications and of course the contacts to make it happen. If you need any further information please give me a call, otherwise we urge all fabricators to explore opportunities with training.
13.01.2022 Leon Quinn from FTMA Bronze Sponsor, Tilling Timber has provided this article on the importance of I-Joist Floor Design Reference Numbers. Great information, thanks Leon. "In my 32 years (gee I sound old!) in the timber industry there has been a lot of change. One of the most significant areas of change we’ve seen is the increase of warranty responsibilities placed upon builders, and how today’s builders increasingly try to mitigate and delegate risk back to contractors and suppliers. The fabricator community is impacted by this trend more than most other areas of construction."
13.01.2022 For those in the Construction Industry, the MBA have great information on their page about the next steps for small scale construction, large scale construction and Early Stage Land Development. Each category has a separate document you can download. Very detailed information and FTMA has saved you the trouble and downloaded the documents which have been emailed to all members tonight.
12.01.2022 As everyone knows FTMA Australia loves to recognise the people that make our sector so great to be a part of. When I came into the job back in 2009, I was fortunate enough to meet so many great down to earth people who make up our wonderful industry. Two of these wonderful souls were Julie & Fred McDonald from Beaudesert Frame and Truss who I clicked with immediately. It may be because of their laid-back nature, their friendly disposition, or the fact that, like me, they are ...mad Rugby League fans, even if it is the Broncos! FTMA Australia congratulates Julie & Fred on the sale of their business and wish them all the best for their retirement.

06.01.2022 In a decision strongly welcomed by TTIA and FTMA Australia, the High Court of Australia has allowed the appeal by Mondelez and the Minister of Industrial Relations against the 2019 Full Court of the Federal Court of Australia (Full Federal Court) decision on the meaning of ‘day’ in the entitlement to ‘10 days’ of personal/carer’s leave per year of service in the National Employment Standards. TTIA's Brian Beecroft provides an overview including the background to this case and what it means for Employers.

04.01.2022 What to Look for to Have Confidence in LVL Used in Australia is a fantastic article written by EWPAA’s Andy McNaught. LVL use in Australia is growing for all classes of building in Australia, but particularly in residential construction. Supply comes from domestic and imported manufacturing sources, both large and small. So how does the user of LVL have confidence in the product specified (besides using FTMA timber sponsors who are all compliant)? To learn more on this important issue please read on.
