18.01.2022 Training and the menstrual cycle We all know the feels of the different phases in our cycles, with some having us feeling energetic AF and others making us feel BLAH and moody #sorrynotsorry But did you know, the way we feel in these stages, can have a big impact on how we train? So here are some facts about each phase and what you should do training wise, to honour your cycle! ... Days 1-7: Menstruation Hormones are at a lowww, leaving you feeling blah, bloated and crampy. However, this is the phase were you will find yourself feeling stronger, so up your reps and your weights and use that strength to hit some PBs! Days 8-14: Proliferate Phase Hormone levels start to rise and you find yourself feeling your best with the most energy to smash out 100 burpees (oh, just me? ) Keep up the intensity and use the extra energy to kill your cardio workouts! Days 15-21: Luteal Phase Hormones are at their peak this week and you’ll start to notice a dip in your energy, mood and motivation. In this week, it’s ideal to take it down a notch with training intensity. You’ll find that it’s harder for you to do certain exercises this week as opposed to last and that is ok! Focus on your form and just moving your body. Days 22-28: 2nd half of Luteal Phase. And BAM, hormones drop drastically. This is where you (might) get the raging PMS symptoms! (Hello bloating, mood swings, crying, raging, etc) As much as you will want to curl up in bed/couch, watch bulk Netflix and eat chocolate, now more then ever is where you’ll need your self discipline to workout! Exercise will not only help improve your mood, but also helps with the fluid retention and cramping you may experience. Workouts that get your heart rate up and blood pumping, will ensure that you will feel so much better after a workout in this phase then you would’ve if you just stayed on the couch! Once you understand training and your cycle, it will all make sense! 06.01.2022 And this is how I know I’ve created a community of kick ass women! We just got back from our little getaway and today these legends (plus Mel who took the photo) STILL got down to the courts and smashed a full cardio session together without me there. Those who couldn’t make it managed to do it at home as well! There was a lot of running (about 3.3kms to be exact, in intervals) and a couple of almost power spews ... But they still showed up, knowing it would be hard. Knowing it would be tough physically and mentally. I am always proud of my clients, but especially proud today at their efforts. Bloody awesome guys! Back to it tomorrow, I missed one day and I really really did miss it so so keen to get back into it! 02.01.2022 Exercise is therapy Today after reading some horrible news, I was so overwhelmed with emotion. I cried, I was/am angry, I had tightness in my chest and neck then my energy was drained. I couldn’t focus on work, so I knew I need to do something. And I knew that something was exercise. ... I didn’t have a plan, I didn’t have a set workout, I just wanted to move my body to shift my energy. It’s so incredible how moving your body can change how you feel. I did a quick pyramid workout with upper body focus (probably about 15-20min) and I finished it with a clearer mind. I know exercise isn’t everyone jam BUT the benefits of it are just too good to ignore. It’s not just for weight loss. It’s not just for muscle gain. It’s for so much more. Mental health, anxiety, stress, health, sleep, energy, THE LIST GOES ON. Next time you are in a slump, you feel blah, you feel upset or angry, MOVE YOUR BODY.
