When people go through hard times, one of the first comments they might hear is "yeah that must have been hard but at least it's not *insert horrible situation here*" At no point will that ever be helpful.... Perspective is great. It allows us to look at situations from a worldly viewpoint which can help things feel less overwhelming. BUT The type of 'change your perspective' statement like the one above undermines a person's lived experience. Everything is relative. Somebody that has had a relatively 'easy' life compared to another person will likely find a difficult situation more challenging than the person who is used to a difficult life. Never undermine a person's individual lived experience, they are allowed to (and it is bloody important to) experience normal human emotion and not suppress how they feel because they 'don't have it as bad' as someone else. #FMTcrew #perspective #relative #mentalhealth #emotion #wellbeing #support #mentalhealthfirstaid
