04.01.2022 Culture of a Business Is it important? Be somebody who makes everybody feel like a somebody Robby Novak Today I saw the above quote on a popular social media platform. It started me thinking, this is what we aim to do at Fuel Storage Solutions!... In a world of Corporate approaches and Big business we sometimes forget about the softer side of business. This is not just about reducing our environmental impact; making sure we have a 0% RIDDOR report; or other things that make us look good to our competitors, the market in general or to our customers. It’s about the things that make us what we are as an organisation, and how that influences the experience of those around us every day. There are plenty of memes out there about how we should treat employees but do we actually do what they suggest? Do we extend that beyond our 4 walls? Does our behaviour enhance the experience of those that we meet on a one-off basis? Over the last 17 years, Fuel Storage Solutions has grown but at no point have we lost what Jonathan and I set out to create. We may have had pitfalls and failed on occasion but that only encouraged us to improve and take action. We have always wanted our Company to be Somewhere people wanted to work. To us this meant that we were an organisation that people were proud to be associated with. At first this just related to employees but, because we encourage and demonstrate a certain kind of behaviour, the impact stretched beyond just our employees and impacted on Customers, the Public and everyone whose paths cross ours. What happens when you grow though? Can you sustain this approach? The honest answer is that you can but it’s hard to do and needs an investment of time. We realised this and decided to formalise what we had always striven to be. We wrote our Vision, Mission and Culture. We worked with our employees to get their views and created a formal document so that, no matter how big we get, we are reminded of what we want to be. This is not really anything new to FSS. The Culture we have encouraged is emulated by our employees as a matter of course. They realise that we work as a team to be the best we can in all areas. We look after each other. No-one is just a number. Our Culture means that all persons who encounter FSS receive the benefit. The consequence is that our whole business emanates our core principles of integrity, quality, inclusivity and empowerment. So the answer to my question is, Yes. 01.01.2022 Every year, instead of spending money on sending Christmas cards to our suppliers and customers, we make a donation to charity. Last year we donated to Bradford Soup Kitchen. This year, in memory of Carl Jones (who was one of our engineers and passed away unexpectedly in October), we have decided to donate to Hull4Heroes. We have donated 2 tickets to the Touring Cars at Donington in March 2020 plus overnight accommodation for 2 nights. The charity is currently fundraising ...to build a "veteran’s street" (housing for veterans) and, hopefully, we will work with them in the future on this project. As this charity was close to Carl's heart it seems appropriate to adopt them this year. Additional details can be found through the link below.
