23.01.2022 More about the F&P Benchmark: If you look at a younger childs reading of a very simple text, much of the behavior is overt. They stop, start again, repeat, m...ake many attempts at words, and read. A criterion of 90% accuracy for younger readers is high enough to assume that they not only can read the text but have a good chance to comprehend it. Really? See my attached example of 91% accuracy. As long as they use the meaningful cues derived from pictures and context, the reading behaviors valued in this philosophy, young children are doing fine! #FailingStudentsorFailingSchools, time to read my book and know what your child needs to succeed! 22.01.2022 With permission to share from Steven Dykstra: "Talked to a girl this last week. 14 years old. Sharp, edgy, quick, but sad. She has had a hard life. If she had ...learned to read better than barely, and write better than almost not at all, she would have still had a hard life but it would have been better. As it is, it all just piles on and she cant take it, sometimes. It took a few seconds of very informal assessment to be almost sure she has very poor phonological awareness. No surprise. Her grandmother told how she did very poorly on an early screening measure (PALS, its hard to do really bad on PALS) but the school told her 2 things about it 1) Lets wait and see, and 2) She has such a good (oral) vocabulary and shes so smart, were not worried. I explained what I thought was happening, why spelling and writing are even harder than reading.. She and her grandmother were very interested. We talked about how frustrating it is to have really good ideas and answers but you write really simple ones because you cant spell what your mind can say, so you never get credit for what you know. She explained how they taught her how to use "context cues" (her term) to figure out words. I said she was probably really good at it but it still doesnt work very well because its a terrible idea. I said her teachers didnt know any better. It wasnt their fault. Her arms are covered in scars. She dwells on how ugly she thinks she is, but she perked up a lot when I explained dyslexia to her. That was her, and she knew it. Were going to try and get this straightened out, but shes 14, weve wasted a lot of time, and it wont be easy. Its a lot to ask of her. Do everything you can to learn and promote the Science of Reading. Learn as much as you can, as fast as you can. Promote it everywhere you can Lives are on the line, and time matters." Can we get an amen?

12.01.2022 We have to link the ears, mouth and mind for effective literacy teaching. Printed words are visual but they are not stored in the brain this way. Visual memo...ry is not what helps the sounds and letters stick together. I am constantly reminding students to say the sounds as they write. We must teach learners to orally segment words and precisely pronounce the phonemes (speech sounds) as they write the letters (graphemes - individual letter or letter string) This means that phonics instruction should be a time of productive noise mapping sound to symbol quiet work is not the most effective way. As children do this they make it stick for effortless retrieval later on. It's not going to happen overnight but with lots of repetition this practice will lead to fluent reading and accurate spelling.

06.01.2022 "Children with dyslexia have less brain activity underlying visual motion in area V5/MT compared to controls of the same age; however, this difference does not ...emerge when the dyslexics are compared to younger controls, matched on reading ability, and it increases following a reading intervention. We conclude that magnocellular visual system dysfunction is not causal to dyslexia. For more information, see Olulade et al., Neuron 79(1)." https://www.youtube.com/watch
