25.01.2022 Hi everyone, Happy world OT day & OT week! For those that don’t know me, my name is Kim and I am one of the Occupational Therapists at Full Circle Therapies.... I would like to share a bit more about the social skills program that we offer at Full Circle Therapies that I am extremely proud to be a part of, in honour of this years 2020 OT week theme Resilience: Supporting our communities to rebuild, recover and reengage. At FCT we run 3 weekly social skills group sessions. - Tuesday nights are with Fiona Brooke - Occupational Therapist, for children in years 7-9. - Wednesday nights are with myself, for children in years 5-7. - Thursday nights are with Emily Sherry - Speech Pathologist, for children in years 3-4. During the lockdown earlier this year, Emily and I spent some time redesigning the social skills program to ensure that not only was it evidence based supported by recent literature, but also in line with the clients and their families goals to allow for family centred and collaborative client therapist practices. Since then, the children have been working extremely hard on both their social skills and emotional regulation skills needed to optimize their engagement in the home, school and community environments, as well as develop and maintain meaningful relationships. Last term I ran a pilot project with my group to implement their taught skills in the program into the wider community and what a success that was! They were able to volunteer at a stall at the GBC Twilight Fete with supervision and minimal assistance from myself, an allied health assistant and an occupational therapy student to interact with the Kalgoorlie-Boulder community. Following the wonderful feedback and support that the Kalgoorlie-Boulder community gave me last term, we will now be extending this learning opportunity to the junior and senior social skills group where we will be volunteering at the Christmas Street Party on the 29th November. By allowing ongoing opportunities for our clients to generalize and transfer their learnt skills across different environmental settings, not only provides us as therapists with feedback on how to adapt the program to best support the children work towards their goals but it also increases their confidence, engagement and resilience, which aligns with this years OT theme. For any further questions regarding the social skills program or what OT at FCT entails please don’t hesitate to get in contact with us at 9022 9881. Have a lovely week! 22.01.2022 Meet the new additions to the Full Circle family. We are seeking name suggestions and over the next week, the children will have a chance to vote for the names they like the most. Keeping chickens and a chicken coop is being praised as therapeutic for people on the autism spectrum. People who keep chickens are getting those with autism involved in feeding and caring for the chickens which promote self-help and independent living skills. The chickens serve as a conversation starter for people who are shy and limited socially, thereby helping to improve their social skills with peers.

21.01.2022 Speech Pathology Australia supports Developmental Language Disorder Awareness Day on Friday 16 October because more light needs to be shed on a hidden condition... that affects on average two children in every classroom. DLD is a condition that causes difficulties with speech, language understanding, communication, and reading (with an associated high risk of dyslexia). Developmental Language Disorder is now the accepted term for language difficulties where the language disorder has no other differentiating or influencing condition (e.g. the absence of Autism, Down Syndrome, Fragile X, etc.). The term DLD describes children who are likely to have a language problem that endures into middle childhood and beyond; without diagnosis and specialist support this condition has a significant impact on their everyday social interactions and schooling. If you are concerned a child you know has DLD, contact a speech pathologist. Find a speech pathologist via the Speech Pathology Australia website.> https://bit.ly/3k4PNjx

18.01.2022 We are so thankful to have been donated some amazing seedlings (zucchini and watermelon) from one of our families yesterday. Then today we harvested our first onions and a tiny little potato! Gardening with children provides them with skills to help your child's development. Young children can practice locomotor skills, body management skills and object control skills while they move from one place to the other carrying tools, soil and water.
17.01.2022 Speech Pathology Week 2020 Tip #3 Go Digital! #SPweek IPads aren’t only for entertainment, they are an amazing learning tool that allows children to communicate with confidence wherever they go. There are hundreds of apps and activities that allow students to develop their speech and language skills, in therapy, at school and at home. ... IPads and tablets also provide students with a means of communication to allow them to express their individual wants and needs. These include activities relating to following instructions, building sentences, visual schedules and speaking clearly. Children with funding through NDIS may also be able to apply for devices to allow them to access augmentative alternative communication (AAC) apps including proloquo2go and touchchat. We will upload a quick video shortly on all the apps available to promote communication, language and literacy shortly. We are so thankful to the Rotary Club of Kalgoorlie for providing our Allied Health Team with a set of IPads to benefit the children each and everyday at Full Circle Therapies. Emily Sherry Speech Pathologist

09.01.2022 Thank you to one of our Families for your beautiful gift to Full Circle. We are thrilled to have your support. Social Stories such as these help provide information about what might happen in a particular situation, and some guidelines for behaviour. They can also increase structure in a person's life and thereby reduce anxiety. Your support truly means the world to us, and we are extremely grateful!
08.01.2022 Speech Pathology Week 2020 Tip #1 for Communicating with Confidence #SPweek 1. Provide different ways to communicate ... Not all children are at the stage of using their words, this is why it is important to offer and accept the various other ways of communication. Our Speech Pathologist Zoe is holding some examples of other ways children and adults can communicate. These include a core vocabulary board, Key Word Sign manual and utilising an IPad. Children can also use gestures such as pointing, eye contact and hand leading. It’s important to always support and encourage children in their own unique way to become confident communicators Keep an eye out on our Facebook page to know when our next Speech Pathology Parent Workshop is on

07.01.2022 Speech Pathology Week 2020 Tip #2 for Communicating with Confidence #SPweek 2. Add language to everything! ... Often we can focus on communication as a means for children to request what they would like. Although this is a very important aspect, there are so many other reasons we communicate and should encourage children to communicate too. We communicate to greet others, express our opinions, disagree, describe, comment, show humor, retell events, identify feelings and ask questions just to name a few! Here one of our Speech Pathologist's Piper is pictured with our playground communication board - which assists our clients to communicate with confidence for a range of reasons when having fun in our LotteryWest Therapy Garden.

02.01.2022 #otweek2020 #ThisisOT OT Week Resilience - Supporting our communities to rebuild, recover and re-engage. Fiona Brooke Occupational Therapist says:... The definition of resilience is the capability of a strained body to recover its size and shape after deformation caused especially by compressive stress or an ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change (Merriam-Webster Dictionary). This resonated with me, as an occupational therapist, as we are constantly working towards building our client’s abilities to overcome whatever challenges life may throw at them. We are continuously working towards giving them strategies and skills to be able to jump over any hurdle or barrier they may come across and allow them to create their own independence and identity in their lives. This year especially has given our clients and their families some very difficult hurdles to jump over and some have been affected by the recovery of the jump much more than others. Occupational therapy in the paediatric setting needs to refocus on recovery and re-engagement of our clients towards their valued activities and occupations so they can rebuild their mental health and capacity to ‘bounce back’. We need to provide opportunities for our clients and children to learn how to look after their well-being and regain their footing and balance after jumping over a hurdle, figuratively speaking. Teaching children mindfulness, accessing their inner-calm and bringing themselves back to the present moment is such a vital tool we can give them for their future. It can be something as simple as taking a breather outside in the fresh air, mindfully blowing bubbles, simple yoga activities, stretching out the body muscles or having some time in with parents or caregivers with a drink or snack. These activities can be so effective and are essential for our clients. #ThisisOT #OTWeek2020Resilience -
